Should we petition Blizzard to put BW on steam?

Soo as many of you know steam is a powerful game service designed by Valve and they have a gigantic user base.

Soo I'm asking myself if we should petition Blizzard to put Brood war on steam. I mean I know Valve is their 'competitor', but in my opinion a big discount on Brood war would mean enough sales to satisfy both parties.

A lot of people who already played brood war and stopped would probably buy it at a discounted price and if we also petition for Plugins such as Iccup and Fish being included that would really boost the amount of people playing on these services. The average skill level would probably decrease drastically, but new blood is always good.

I think that if Blizzard were to put very little effort into this. It would be fairly profitable.

Soo what do you think?

and is blizzard stubborn enough to refuse money because of a 'grudge' with Valve or vice-versa?

See, the thing is, Blizzard is trying to kill off Brood War so that SC2 can grow uncontested.

Doing so would be counter-productive for them.

Yeah that could be their reasoning, but in my opinion it would attract an entirely different player-base that doesn't have much in common with the SC2 player-base.

Soo in my opinion it wouldn't actually be counter-productive.

I am also of the opinion that Brood war could probably sell another 100,000 copies. The majority of the sales would be people who have already owned the game at some point and previous 'competitive' players the majority would probably just play the campaign for nostalgic purposes, but a few would rejoin the community and play again.

and depending on the price they could easily get an additional million or two of the game. I only see this as a win for blizzard.

i dont see how BW is a threat to sc2 since its an old game, the games nowadays[LoL,dota2] are far superior to Sc2.

This won't happen because Blizzard wants to maintain Battle.net as their platform to connect all their games (from both account management on-site as well as in-game).

Even for their "legacy" games, they won't put in on steam. It's just a conflict of interest regardless.

GOG would probably be a better place to sell it. DRM free

It's more about that the two games have the same target audience.
But I like both SC2 and BW anyway

I don't think putting the ''legacy'' games will hurt them in any shape or form it would only bring in more money and in addition I'm pretty sure blizzards actually and only interest is money and this is a way to satisfy that.

Because SC 2 is using battle-net as it's platform so that would be a conflict in interests like Torte de Lini said, but I don't think that applies to BW.

You can keep using the rationale "it doesn't hurt them in any shape", but that doesn't necessarily mean they're looking for increase in revenue in exchange for equating one online platform for their own. You should read up on what involves adding a company's game onto the Steam platform for starters, it's not a "sign here" process.

I'm pretty sure blizzards actually and only interest is money and this is a way to satisfy that.

Don't be ridiculous.

-I'm pretty sure it would still justify putting it up there. With all the blizzards talented developers they could easily change the code a bit and put it up on steam and IF that is to hard put it on GOG, but that wouldn't be nearly as profitable if I actually think about it that wouldn't actually do much.

-How is that ridiculous? Companies want to earn money that's why they exist and good consumer will would do them no harm with the fucking up of D3 and the massive waits that WOW players have to manage.

Edit: FIXED

Don't see this thread heading anywhere good...

As long as Blizzard wants to maintain it's b.net platform, this will never happen, unfortunately.

I don't think people realize what this could mean for the game and Blizzard will do it if they are encouraged enough!

No they arent. They still manufacture SC/BW, Diablo 2/LoD and Warcraft 2/3 discs to this day, they are all a part of their Gold brand and you can buy them anywhere. The only reason they arent re releasing Diablo 1 and Warcraft 2 is because they did not publish those games and thus dont have the rights.

Name me a developer/publisher that is still re releasing physical discs of games from 1998 today? Yeah, almost none.

Blizzard is not going to put anything on Steam, they have nothing to gain to see Valve gain complete monopoly over digital PC game sales. Considering the strong sales of Diablo 3, they have no need for Steam at all.

PC gaming =/= Steam. Plenty of people sell millions of games and promote them without it, some of the biggest PC games today are non Steam: Minecraft, League of Legends, Blizzard titles and many more.

Blizzard has their own digital download store that sells BW DRM Free (I think they give you a CD key to put in, but otherwise...). I got my copy of BW from it. Why would they use steam? If you pay $20 to get BW from the Bnet store, Blizz gets $20. Buy it from Steam for $20, Blizzard gets $14 (Steam takes a cut)

They should lower the price, sure, but it's not like $20 for SC1 + BW is some unreasonable bullshit.

Edit: Also, you can still find the Starcraft Battle Chest in stores, as mentioned. It's not at all a hard game to find.

Yes steam takes a big cut, but discounts also increase profit by as much as 700%.

The thing is if Blizzard were to discount their game on their store nobody would really know that it's discounted if they put it on steam with a discount it would sell like crazy because of it's massive user base. Soo even with the steams cut blizzard would surely sell enough copies to get at least a million dollars.

Yeah, but the thing is old blizzard games WERE popular they aren't anymore. If they were re-released on steam they would be popular for a time at least.

Citation needed. Even at the full $20 price, it takes 50,000 sales of BW to make a million dollars. 70,000 if it were $20 on Steam (because Steam takes 30%, IIRC). Are there really 70,000 people for whom the only reason they haven't bought BW yet is because they've never walked into a Best Buy or Target, which have been selling the Starcraft Battle Chest for over a decade?

Trust me, if "BW on steam = Monies", Blizz would've put it on Steam. If you want BW for digital download without DRM, you can buy it from Bnet right now.

Because they forgot about BW if they were reminded in any shape or form they probably would. If you have 200 games on steam you might as well have 201 games on steam that's how the majority of people work.

I highly doubt anything we do will get them to throw any resources towards BW
