Best hotkey layout?

I have been trying to improve my gameplay as a silver league terran and wanted to know everyone's opinion on hotkey layout. I have currently memorized the terran standard layout and i wasn't sure if grid had any advantages compared to standard? Also what do majority of professional players use?

Thanks

I use a custom set up for my hotkeys, u have to go into standard and unhotkeyed everything. then make everything just like grind, meaning that the top row of butions are qwer second is asdf and third is zxcv. but i cant reach the zx keys so i made zxcv into cvbn.

I also remapped the "backspace button" which cycles through your bases. to space bar and "attack move" to ` also i remapped " select all warpgates to "backspace button" given i do not play toss much.

also I remapped the " save screen location 1, 2 and 3 " to number pad 1,2,3 and to go to them i just use my middle mouse button, shift middle mouse button and control middle mouse button.

this is done for all 3 race, that way when i play off race its not a hassle to learn new hotkeys. also for units that do not use particular letters such as creep tumors, i have the spawn creep tumor button blinded to c and v.

oh and make sure u have the box checked for buttion sharing for things like cloak and decloak it will help a lot ^^

There is no such thing as "best layout", only the one that fits you best, the hotkey editor is very detailed, also you can add more customization by using hotkey files, so just try a lot new things up and see what plays best.
As a reference, I use the normal Grid setup, with some modifications to the hotkey file:
Attack Move to A
Baneling Morph to Q
Baneling Explode to D(VERY IMPORTANT!)
Load/Unload to E/R
Camera Save to Ctrl+F1-8
Base Cam to `
Idle Worker to Tab
Cycle Control Group to Capslock

The only thing I changed from the standard setup was changing the control group '0' to Mouse4. Its pretty hard to get used to new settings if you played with different ones for a certain time. So either change them early enough or never.

Maybe it's just me, but I cannot play at what I feel is my best without the screen capture hotkeys. It's probably an old habit from Broodwar, but these hotkeys would save a specific position on the map so you could instantly jump there by just hitting a key instead of going down to the minimap. I prefer using my keyboard for almost everything (Mouse accuracy is not my strong suit) and being able to jump between bases really quickly with the help of those keys is absolutely tremendous. I got rid of all those random hero hotkeys that they had assigned to F2-F4 and made my life a whole lot easier.

As for tip-top pros, it's hard to say. Most of them do not discuss this kind of thing--they just take it for granted, and you usually do not see any of their hotkey setups on streams. I hate to guess, so I'd say it's pretty situational and every player has what he thinks works for him. I know NoNy has some weird shit going down with his hotkeys, but I don't know about anyone else.

As for hotkeys for everything else, I believe I have a penchant for memorizing those things fairly quickly so I never felt the need to go to grid/custom set ups. All in all, there's no set way to set up your hotkeys. But, if you find yourself wasting time in-game wondering what the hotkey for some obscure ability/upgrade is, you should look into changing some things. Overall, do what feels right!

Get some bases, smash some faces.

Since I like to mess with random a lot the only i think I changed was the upgrades that are now mapped to Z X C V keys in the order its showing in game. Like on rax lab the card order is combat (Z), stim (X), shell (C) and reaper speed (V) and this works for tech labs, ebay, armory, forge, cyber, council, evo, spire, hatch...

Imo best hotkey layout is the one that causes you least miss-clicks, ie: hitting G instead of H (for hold) and enabling guardian shield by accident can be a pain. Solution move hold position or guardian shield to another location, as I did not have much rts mechanics engraved into my hands prior to sc2 i found it easier to move Hold to Q (close to attack) and leave Guardian shield on G.
Also seeing as I bind my forge to 7 i hotkey the upgrades to U,I,O
Only thing thats not very common about my hotkeys is I i have armies on 4-6 nexi on 1 and F2-F5 for way points

Im pretty sure hotkeys setup of Pros also vary a fair bit seeing as people come from different RTS backgrounds and have different play habits

I bought a pack of cigarettes for $20, What have you done for your country today?

You sound lazy as hell. And your key setup sounds really herp a derp derp what happens when people don't have tenkeys, you'd rather control ,shift etc as your camera jumps is setting camera jumps with ctrl+f1 etc etc to set and just use the f-keys like normal people minus the people with tiny hands that aren't fast and can't jump/reach quickly.

W selects all warpgates granted its redundant as lots of players still just put their gateways in a control group >_> just like barracks, factories, and any building that doesn't have a weird hotkey like that. Learning is a part of life don't become soo complacent especially if you aren't like you know a pro or grandmaster it should matter if the race's hotkeys are all different.

If you really want true efficiency and the "best" layout, I'd pick one of these three. ALOT of work has gone into making these amazing. I personally use TheCore and it's made by the creators of the first two.

Jakatak
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=333891

DarkGrid
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=257590

TheCore
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=341878

If I didn't use the core I'd use Jakatak's first layout.

it really doesn't matter which hotkey setup you use...

On the contrary, it really does. The standard hotkey setup has very low efficiency and high finger travel time, it's only made that way so you can remember things easily. If you learn one of the above mentioned hotkeys (Jakatak, TheCore, or DarkGrid), you'll be able to achieve higher APM than before, thus resulting in smoother play, and better mechanics. Trust me, I play better now that I switched from standard hotkey setup to Jakatak (at this moment I'm also trying to learn TheCore and helping betatest it).

I've just found Liquid`TLO's twitch tv channel and have noticed that he plays with the standard hotkey layout with f1-f4 as his camera saves so im thinking learning to get good with standard, i mean if he can be one of the best players with standard layout then it must not be so bad and game changing.

Most pros use standard (or standard with some changes). Hardly anyone uses grid. I think you should just use standard with a few tweaks. Here's some suggestions:

Patrol - Q or Z (default P)
Lift - F (default L)

Create Location 1 - Shift+F1
Create Location 2 - Shift+F2
Create Location 3 - Shift+F3
Jump to Location 1 - F1
Jump to Location 2 - F2
Jump to Location 3 - F3
idle worker - ~tilde
note: you could use F2, F3, F4 instead if you want to keep the idle worker key set to F1

In your sc2 gameplay options, have you enabled Display Command Hotkey Text?

I hope you don't end up using one of those horrible custom setups (Darkgrid, TheCore, Jakatak). They're designed/tested by some silver league guy(s) that advertise and make wild claims in every hotkey related thread. I wouldn't listen to anyone that thinks its good to bind control groups to mouse buttons (or keys like ERDF). I really don't think they understand the game well enough to redesign an optimized hotkey layout.

Here is what I used based on the standard hotkeys:

1. Lift to Z
2. Patrol to Q
3. Camera keys to F2 - F5
4. Control group 0 rebound to `
5. Bunker build remapped fro U to Y.

Note I have since switched to theCore. If you are lower level I would go this route as you will have less muscle memory fighting you.
