[Q] How many people playing SC2

Just a question you guys might be able to help me out with to sate my curiosity.

I was wondering, on average, how many people are playing SC2 concurrently worldwide? Or if that is too difficult a question, how many minimum and maximum players are logged onto SC2 in any given week at a point in time across all servers?

Thanks.

I know I don't play anymore. I watch a lot, I pay for PPV based SC2 stuff etc. I just prefer playing other games. So you can count 1 person out of a few billion who doesn't! :D

Because of the small ladder pool, I've noticed several players that were previously platinum level such as myself are now in silver league.

Apparently, there are about 600k people who are placed in 1v1 this season (SOURCE), there are about 250k people who played in the past week (SOURCE).
I'm not sure about the total with the team games and with the custom games unfortunately.

I know I don't play any more. I appreciate the game, I think of it as a 'good' game, which is why I still tune into streams and tourneys etc. but to me it is not a fun game to play.

Are those numbers good ? I mean, i remember sc2ranks had some kind of trouble at some point, it would have like 90 % random players in gm plus 100% in the other three races ..

I am sure the numbers have gone down over time, i'd imagine that hots will bring people back into sc 2 land. For myself I haven't really played much after getting demoted from diamond. I think I just lost motivation to play it. And I have been enjoying mass effect 2 (finally got it on my ps3) since the semester is over I have time to play some console games.

Casual players keep dropping off and will continue to do so, as they go to other casual games or play teamgames. We will be left with only those who enjoy the competitiveness of 1v1.

People who use this as some measurement of where sc2 is heading should rather look at the change of viewers for live events. That's a much more interesting statistic.

Has it been changing? I know I personally don't play anymore, but I still love to watch.

Basedon Recent tournaments, it seems to have been growing, though I'm basing this mostly on IPL4 vs MLG Winter vs MLG Providence, etc.

Only if those additional players were more skilled than him. The truth is the opposite; most of the players who quit playing are or were less interested/invested in Starcraft, and so mostly in the lower leagues like bronze and silver. As players disappear from bronze and silver, players from gold and plat get demoted to balance out the ranks.

I was Diamond when it was Masters in Beta, Masters in season 1, Diamond for most seasons, and last 2 seasons I have been Platinum. Funny thing is, honestly, I think I have been improving. Relative to my own gameplay, I am most certainly a lot better than I was 6 months ago. But, relative to the people laddering, I'm obviously falling behind. The real baddies don't play anymore, and a ton of casuals just don't bother ladering anymore.

I took a couple months off from playing SC2. Mostly because of school. I also started playing more casual games such as NFS World and SSF4 AE with friends online(I'm the only one out of my friends that still plays sc2).

As a result I went from Masters to Gold. T_T. God I suck now. And I really don't have the motivation to get back into the swing of things before HOTS.

I don't play much anymore because it's just not fun to deal with cheese 50% of the time. You can argue that I should learn to defend against cheese better, but with so many other games to play, why should i? Canon rushing takes the fun away from the game. Great if you like to deal with it, I moved on. Still watch alot because it's interesting to watch high level plays and follow players.

the system doesnt try to have a set amount or percentage of people per league, unless everyone in gold league left he wouldnt get demoted to fill in gold league

I think once the unranked auto-que comes out alot more people will play more casually. Its much easier to play the game when there is no ladder fear,

Naah, the kind of people who would quit because of their ranking quit just because they don´t like to lose.

I expect it will help but it won´t be the fix for that.

This would probably have been better as a post in the SC2 General Discussion thread. It really doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

I think a poll might be in order to determine how many people are still playing Sc2.

Poll: Do you still play 1v1 ladder in Sc2?

Yes (29)

71%

No (10)

24%

Other (2)

5%

41 total votes

Your vote: Do you still play 1v1 ladder in Sc2?

(Vote): Yes
(Vote): No
(Vote): Other

If you marked "other" please specify in the thread.

EDIT: for me personally, I still play 1v1 Ladder Sc2, somewhat regularly (at least 10 games per week).
When you stare into the iCCup, the iCCup stares back.
