Keep this civil, guys |
The arguments on tl regarding this topic are insane. I honestly can't see how one can argue that it's acceptable behavior. While I spit the word faggot and many other potentially 'racist offensive' words regularly, that is within a given context which I deem acceptable. And, as I understand, Destiny feels he is within right to call someone a gook, in that context, and the following consequences are a gross mistreatment. What I don't understand, is how someone can reach this conclusion, based on the argument that words can be said, but have no meaning, or 'weight' to them, IN THE CONTEXT DESTINY IS IN. He has thousands of people watching. Chances are, a large proportion of those are Asian. The word 'gook' was said in a manner that would be no different to a white person calling a black person a nigger (offensively). It is beyond clear that destiny's intent was to offend his opponent, having been all inn-ed, and the word 'faggot' was(is?) no longer a sufficient insult to display his frustration. Impulsive, of course, which I understand very well as I share the same rage response as he does. In fact, I am much worse - I tell people to kill themselves, get cancer etc etc. I am that guy. However, I don't have 5000 people watching me, those of which who potentially have had an experience relating to my insult - whether it be a loved one with cancer, or an experience with suicide or suicidal tendencies, or an experience where you have been explicitly attacked for the sole reason of being a particular race. The viewer count, is what makes desinty's actions completely unacceptable in my opinion at least. While I agree that the action itself is generally unacceptable anyway, destiny's repercussions given his context are deserved. Making the argument that people should just 'man-up' because 'they are just words' is a massive cop out, and is harmful to any community. Whether Destiny likes it or not, or wants to be or not, by having thousands of viewers and sponsors - those that provide his INCOME, he is RESPONSIBLE for his actions. As far as I can tell, he just sounds like a teenager, blaming the 'flaws and hypocrisies of society' for him not being able to control his temper. Deep down, I'm sure he knows that given a second chance, he wouldn't call him a gook and would just stick to faggot. Because he isn't racist, but he is by all means arrogant and insensitive to those he may potentially offend, and that is more than enough reason to be dropped from a team and banned from TL for 30 days.
The guy really just needs to grow up, and stop playing the victim. If he had the insight he claims he does, he would understand that society is the way it is and some people - good people, would be genuinely offended by that racial slur - ALBEIT AN IRRATIONAL RESPONSE. It's kind of like blaming a kid with down-syndrome for not being able to solve a simple puzzle. Thatz just the way it is

YOU people are the disgusting ones, who have no fucking standards of decency. Are you serious? He wasn't purposely trying to hurt ANYONE when using racial slurs... He was expressing frustration at a ladder loss to something he considered cheesy and worthy of being flamed. Just because someone says ''nigger'' or ''faggot'' doesn't make them a racist or homophobic. And please don't attack me personally, it's immature and counter productive to a meaningful discussion TY ^^
Anyone who thinks an acceptable way to express frustration is to use racial slurs is an incredibly ignorant individual, and you're promoting that. Way to be hypocritical calling someone else immature for attacking you when you're supporting someone attacking others, and in a much more disgusting way.

Let's bring real life sports into the mix again. If Teebow whatever his name is, the jesus freak, went up to Emmit Smith and was like "You never were worth much of a N____r anyways" - how would the football community react?
I don't follow sports mind you, those are just names that came to mind, what do you think would happen? Cursing and being angry is one thing. Directing it at another competitor IN THE PUBLIC EYE, is down right wrong.
Look at some of the points Destiny made in his announcement as well, about speaking maturely in a mature rated game. Really? You guys are defending this child? Because you simulate warfare doesn't justify personal attacks, let alone racial hate towards one another. If he wants to get technical... these are GAMES, where the intention is to have fun with others. Not bash on them and expect to be rewarded for being a terrible human being. Just sayin'. ay[9]* I am so sorry I said Just Sayin'...

truly this community is slowly destroying e-sports, certainly not the entire thing though. some of us retain logic and don't frivilously try to destroy other people for the trolly laughs that some people seem to need in order to find purpose in their lives. anyone who can make a statement like "players need to be policed" needs to stop attempting to be part of this community, imo. If player's need to be policed, as does every single person that interacts in any sort of international way online, which includes this site, gomtv.net, reddit, etc etc etc. because you're representing your country whether you know it or not, the statements you make help form people's opinions of you and your countrymen. the fact that so many americans are on this site and go about emailing sponsers any time they get offended is so incredibly saddening, for the fact that adults, or most of them are adults, will never and have never matured beyond the mental age of 10. grow up, believe in the 1st amendment, its the only reason people can't kill you for what you say. (althought i'm sure some people deserve it far more than others <3) Allow freedom of speech to everyone, especially in an intellectual community such as this, it's a simple standard to keep.
edit: also, to anyone who says, in far more characters, that "words hurt" grow. the. fuck. up. do you seriously go about your life being offended and pissed off all day long? because you must if you think its inappopriate for destiny to say what he wants to the people that want to watch him, if you don't like it, don't fucking watch. but instead it seems people are more content trying to destroy teams/players than do what makes sense.

"But Destiny is entitled to his free speech!!!"
And everyone else is entitled to theirs as well, and they chose to use it by voicing their dispelasure at the shit coming out of dudes mouth.

If you use a racial slur, and people get angry, you are not an innocent victim. It's pretty easy to not get people up in arms, all you have to do is not insult/degrade entire swathes of people you don't know in a public setting (i.e. ladder match). Seriously, no one has been taken to task by the community for having an opinion. Destiny earned a reaction, you may disagree with it, but it's not a random unprovoked response.
|
Utterly irrelevant semi-pro acts like a child on his stream and leaves his team because some people got annoyed and wrote to the sponsors.
Wow, big news. Totally changes eSports forever.
|
Anyway we can get him relisted?
I think I speak for alot of visitors when I say I look to the place for news and stream links first. Forums and the drama they manufacture are a distant second. Not telling you guys how to run your show, but keeping certain facets of the site seperate and independant of each other would be great. If its popular and related to things that people associate with TL.net I don't see why it shouldn't be listed. Especially when they all come with content warnings.
Can't say I respect anything Destiny says or does, but I do find the show he runs on stream to be amusing. And yes.. him getting beat and the raging that he does plays a part in it.

Just as I am ashamed to be a part of this community right now. You contradict yourself. People not watching = Career is hurt No one watches = Career is lost This is how a free market works. You have to accept that people can associate with whomever they want, that includes TeamLiquid, Quantic, Razer, etc. In this case they choose not to associate with Destiny. I can't believe I have to explain this so many times. No... Quantic and Razer DID choose to associate with Destiny. Destiny is a popular player and has one of the most entertaining and successful game-related streams in the world. They felt forced into withdrawing their association because of thin-skinned forum members who are too stupid to understand the concept of "if you don't like something, don't watch it" and instead felt the need to whine and complain until they see something bad happen to the person they dislike.
Yeah potential customers of a company who makes products for games that they play and sponsors players who play that game shouldn't complain about hateful language being used that makes the community look bad to anyone outside of that community.
Keep ranting about your ridiculous idea of people being able to say what they want without consequences.
