What I find amusing about this is most of these people e-mailing sponsors because their so mature are also the ones wanting to see eSports on TV and in the main stream and this isn't much more then a red flag to stay away. I'm perfectly fine with eSports not growing at all, I enjoy the competition of playing RTS and thats enough for me. If you kids want to play neighboorhood watch and go looking for trouble, have fun but your not going to get much out of it, ask Zimmerman how thats working out for him.

No, it's because you've employed the "I won't clean my room because people will still be starving in Africa" line of argument.

And that is wrong, because?

Because it means so long as there is racism, we should be OK with people using racist words, since we can't ever stop that!

That's not what I said, though. What I said was that as long as we constantly remind ourselves of what a "nigger" or a "faggot" is and how we deliberately give the words their meaning, racists and homophobics will always win the battle. That is, unless we "accept" the terms, just like we've more or less accepted "retard" into our little circle of "okay-to-say" vocabulary. It's no secret that we're putting much more weight on how wrong it is to say "nigger" than it is to say "retard", but making fun of a race is no different from making fun of a disease. Eitherway, you can't change the fact that you are of other ethnic origin or that you are born with a mental disease. Then tell me, why is it that we've come to a point where saying "retard" is almost naturally part of our vocabulary of daily insults, when "nigger" isn't?

Good luck explaining that to people in the real business world who want to help make this game grow. I can see the conversation now.

"Thanks for coming to watch our tournament, we appreciate it."
"No problem, my company would love to be involved in....did he just call his opponent a n****r."
"Yeah, see we allow that because if we try to censor those kinds of words then they have meaning so we feel that if we just allow people to say it then the meaning goes away."
"................."

I'm not saying this is a solution, I was making an example.

Just like how "retard" is socially accepted nowadays.

I'm going to keep calling you on this every time you say it. "Retard" is not a socially acceptable insult.

Is there a socially acceptable insult??

Umm...as I've gotten older I've become curious as to why you'd want to insult someone in a video game at all but you're more than welcome to call someone an inanimate object "piece of shit" or, if they're bad at Starcraft you can say things like "you're fucking terrible you scrub." Hell, you can even insult someone's religion if you want...that's a choice.

I'm also dumbfounded as to why this distinction is so difficult for people to understand.

Wouldn't say any of these are socially acceptable either. The big test is if you would say them at work. If the answer is no, it's not socially acceptable.

There is a distinction that hasn't been made yet I think between professionally acceptable and socially acceptable.

Destiny was using racial slurs while streaming -I think? otherwise yeah this is pretty messed up- using racial slurs while somebody's corporate name is attached to you is just an awful idea.

If somebody is talking amongst friends and somebody is acting retarded and somebody else says so, then I really couldn't care less. I work with mentally challenged individuals all the time. Obviously I would never say any of that stuff at work, but between friends I really don't mind the word retarded. There's probably a distinction between that and racial slurs and perhaps there shouldn't be. Perhaps neither should be acceptable at any time, but that does seem to cause more harm than good. If people are terrified of censorship even within their own homes, they're gonna resent the people censoring them.

Either way I don't think this was necessary.

But to the people who are defending him, you are responsible for your own actions and it these actions are never justified. You should never use racist or homophobic language towards someone. Never. It's not acceptable. You can cuss on your personal stream yeah. You can do other things, but certain language should never be used. You don't call someone retarded. You don't call someone a faggot or gay or cock-sucker or anything homophobic like that. You don't call people gook, chink, spic, nigger, etc. Those things are never acceptable. You get frustrated? Cuss! Cuss all you want. But the other words are not acceptable. Nor will they ever be.

That being said, I wish Destiny the best of luck in the future, even more so if he stops using those slurs completely.

No, I can say what I want, and trust me, I have family members who know better than anyone here what "real" racism is.

If a person like me who have family members whose close ones died in the holocaust, and who lost a friend in a terrorist attack, can be okay with what Stephano and Hasu told each other, you can stop being a worthless PC weakling, grow a spine, and realize that what Destiny says on his stream, he can say on his stream.

I would argue it's for the best even if it was a few unnamed people. I don't want a community for a game that I love being represented by people who are so willfully ignorant of the meaning of their own language.

After getting the full picture about this whole situation i have mix feelings.

On one hand i’m kind of disappointed, as i thought this forum had supposedly a more mature audience, after skimming this thread tough, its obvious that the same angst teens found on /b/ and reddit are here too.
On the other hand my confidence in the SC2 community as a whole has improved.

Now i personally haven’t sent anything, as i could not be bothered to, however i talked to some small SC2 communities that did so, and the word was unanimous, this event was just the last straw that tipped people over (even some that were his fans).
It’s completely ridiculous that some people in this community are fighting to make it thrive while we have a /b/tard redditor, running around spewing memes calling everyone niggers and gooks and mods faggots just because he has an army of edgy drones that like to circlejerk to him.
He lacks even an ounce of professionalism.
Imagine if a professional tennis player started hurling racial across the net during a match, refused to apologize and even went as far as to attempt to JUSTIFY it. His career would be OVER, no do overs. eSports will never manage to gain legitimacy while the community as a whole seems to support this kind of bullshit. Teams should know they can't stand by and allow one of their members (who represent them) to do shit like this and get away with it, and not have to require other people point it out to them.
One would think that a grown man that quit his day job and has a kid would know better than to shit were he eats, but I guess he just can’t control "le" redditor in him.

My hat off to the people that are actually concerned about the community and stay classy destinydrones

Actually nice of you to bring this up.

Because yeah, just about every other pro player out there thinking it's all cool to throw around racial slurs on the ladder.

So if you know any other pro players going "gook" or other racial slurs out there just post the screenshots here and let the community decide and tell the sponsors (and Blizzard for that matter) if they find it acceptable.

thanks for asking.

I take that to mean you emailed quantic's sponsors in this case? Shame on you. I'd like to see the people who emailed the sponsors actually admit to it in this thread, but I doubt they will. And it's telling that they aren't willing to admit it. How do you feel about doing damage to Quantic and it's other players before even giving Quantic a chance to respond? You're Swedish - do you consider yourself a fan of Naniwa? What if he's going to lose some benefits as a result of this? What if this has caused him and other Quantic players worry which hurts their practice mindset? Was there no other way to communicate your opinion to Quantic than to go straight to their sponsors?

I think that deep down, the people who contacted the sponsors realize that it wasn't really to carry the banner of justice and do the right thing for esports. It was just to fulfill some cynical urge in them to be destructive and incite drama. And that's why I haven't seen a single person in this thread admit to it directly (though someone correct me if I've missed it).

The bottom line is that you're doing more harm than good. We would be better off without you as a "fan".

Now let's see if any of them will admit to it in response to this, or if they will just continue to hide in their little holes.

I didn't e-mail Quantic and I am ashamed to say I didn't. In the future I will and if you want to I'll PM you everytime I do.

I don't know why you think I or anyone else would be ashamed to say they e-mailed the sponsors?! You make it sound like it such an embarassing or shameful thing e-mailing sponsors saying they shouldn't support players saying "gook" or using other racial slurs!

So far I have only e-mailed sponsors to praise them for supporting various tournament. I started doing that after InControl had a good blog/post about how important that is.

So in the future I will be consistent and not only e-mail sponsors when I want to praise them but also to say they shouldn't support players that behave like Destiny. Racial slur is not ok. I don't give 2 cents about how cool you or anyone else think Destiny is.

If he wants to be part of a professional team then it's time to act professional. Manner up or gtfo.

This guy understands it, If you are defending Destiny and think we are pathetic cause we don't want racist, prejudice kids representing our community. Then so be it, we are pathetic as a community.......

You are kids, not we. We defend Destiny because we know that making Destiny stop using racial slurs won't purge racism from the world. The only way to ultimately get rid of racism is to accept the fact that by cencoring words, you are encouraging its power.

You are kids, because you do not understand that we're not white knights on horses whose purpose is to save the world from evil. We're an online community for a videogame, not an online forum for politics. Stop pretending you can make an impact on the world, because you cannot. By having a player from this community punished you are not contributing towards your so-called "goal" of purging racism. You are harming the community.

Stop acting, get a grip, grow up and go out. If you want to contribute towards the elimination of racism, then start by accepting the fact, that for aslong as you cencor racial slurs, then you are filling them with meaning and hate. Having a player removed from his StarCraft 2 Team will NOT make an impact.

This actually is a pretty childish post. The adult thing to do is to understand that racism is still a pervasive problem in our society (speaking as a citizen of the US) and that there is nothing we as individuals can do about that. At the same time, we should understand that when individuals in our communities (real or virtual) abuse people in racial terms, we can express our view that such activities are unacceptable. That's the reason you will never hear the word "nigger" in any kind of semi-polite conversation any more. (Google "frown power" to read about a similarly-themed civil rights campaign.) That certainly hasn't eliminated racism, but it does do a little bit to make communities a little less hostile for minorities, which is a positive thing.

I'm a little conflicted about the level of the outcry against Destiny. I mean, he is basically just a kid too, who has the mixed good fortune of having a platform that streams a lot of unedited content out to the world in a way that can come back to haunt him.

I'm definitely dismayed by all the sophistry from Destiny defenders. Free speech is not involved here. People against the use of the word gook as a term of abuse are not the real racists. It is definitely not the case that "the only way to ultimately get rid of racism is to accept the fact that by cencoring words, you are encouraging its power." (Really? You think that's going to do the trick?)

So I'm childish because I choose to deal with racism differently than you?

No, it's because you've employed the "I won't clean my room because people will still be starving in Africa" line of argument.

And that is wrong, because?

Because it means so long as there is racism, we should be OK with people using racist words, since we can't ever stop that!

Mixing up tournaments and ladder play there. They're two rather different spheres.

I wasn't comparing Destiny's ladder rage to my mock tournament, I was demonstrating how ridiculous his line of thought is.
Live it up.

No. Just because some people who have experienced said things (which doesn't matter anyway and hell I can go point to my own family for that as well, being Czechoslovakian in ancestry) are tolerant of it does NOT make it okay.

Slurs are not justifiable. Never will be.

Yeah, i'll also bet that 99% of the people posting here have never actually spoke to a person from school, work or whatever about SC2, and only to people who they know for certain will "understand", all the while talking about "growing esports" while doing absolutely nothing.

There is a minor portion of the sc2 community who think by eliminating popular casters would make esports grow.We have a handfull of players who average above 1k viewers, lol has 3 times the viewercount and foreigners barely even make the final stages of any tournament.Yep good plan to grow esports

I am actually less concerned about 'growing e-sports' than I am being apart of a community that I can be proud of. Why would I tell friends to get involved in a community that tolerates and encourages the use of racist/bigotted language? I would rather the community shrink and mature than grow and stay in its current form. Of course, if it could grow and mature together, that would be ideal, but I have my doubts. I don't wish anyone ill and I'm not out to ruin anyone's career and I'd love to never see another incident like this again, but if these incidents help the community to grow up and mature, then I think it is ultimately a good thing. 'Growing E-sports' isn't just about numbers - that is very short sighted. It's about making a sustainable industry and community and not just tagging onto something that will rise only to crash and burn at a later time.

Well first of all the internet forums are filled with racist/biggoted language.Websites such as CNN,Yahoo,Espn are filled with racism/slurs/disses.And second yes it is about numbers.More viewers=more money=more pros=better quality games

I know more viewers will mean more money and likely better games. I'm saying that it isn't my ultimate concern. Some things are more important to me than my entertainment.

However, from a growth perspective I also think that the community is very shortsighted if they are concerned with having immediate and large viewing numbers because that won't last. If what is attracting the audience is novelty and childish behaviour, then things will die off faster than they started as people go to the 'next cool thing'. If we want to grow Starcraft, then it has to be about more than how much money are we making at the moment and trying to make sure that what we are creating is something that is high-quality and lasting. So it is true that a degree of professionalism won't grow E-sports, but the lack of it may prevent growth.

I'm in the same boat as you, I was a fan of Orb for awhile as well. I would probably get along with both people in real life very well. But I have had many other friends and acquaintances like that, where we get along, but I do NOT agree with their use of such inflammatory language casually. It makes you sound ignorant, and I don't want to be associated with ignorant people.

It's Destiny's stream he can say whatever he wants to say. If you don't like it don't watch it! Instead you all whined like little bitches. Its like trying a certain food for the first time if you dislike the taste you're most likely not going to try it again. If you don't like the stream don't watch it again. But the fact is you watch the stream because of the words and terms he says.

Wait a minute. You mean to tell me there's adult filtering on things, and if you don't like something on the internet you can simply close the window and leave? OMG MIND = BLOWN. Seriously guys? This is a joke. Boohoo someone got offended over some words, not like the guy shot someone and pissed on their dead body. If you can't find humor in anything being said, even if Destiny was serious or not, then simply turn off your computer and walk away. Me personally, I love the movie Gran Torino, and think of that when I think of this entire situation.

On a side note it's Destiny's stream, not anyone elses. He has the authority to do what he damn pleases.

something i had posted on another forum:

its just reddit being reddit.

the /r/starcraft community is the worst thing to ever happen to starcraft (and would of been the worst thing to ever happen to bw if it was around during its time). they're all a bunch awful fucking people who don't think about the impact and consequences that their little "boycott" will have on SC2 days, months or even years from now.

/r/starcraft is made up of a bunch of pitchfork wielding, witch hunting, tight assed little cunts who believe their personal opinion is the only right answer to anything and if you dont share their collective opinion or share the same train of thought as them or act differently or without care or try to dismiss them and their presence or "power", they will do their best to ruin you. the collective narcissism that reddit posses is second to none as far as online communities go and its honestly fucking scary that these kids can quickly and efficiently influence million dollar companies who are genuinely interested in this scene within hours to the point where you can dismantle teams, ruin players, and ruin reputations all within 24 hours or less

the BEST thing that could happen to the SC2 "esports" community would be for /r/starcraft to shut down and nothing like it to ever be recreated. the stupidity, arrogance and general stupidity spewed by that subreddit is something i dont think ive ever seen before and something i never want to see happen to any other community thats trying to grow simply because too much power lies within the hands of mouth-breathing idiots.

yes i know ill probably get banned or something for posting that but its seriously fucking ridiculous that the reddit community keeps going after sponsors and players livelyhood simply because they dont agree with their message or opinions. seriously people, man the fuck up and stop acting like children who run to the teacher everytime another kid says something mean or something you dont like.

Good point. I use extremely filthy language when I'm within my social circle.

I think something to add to the fact that Destiny was technically at work, was that it's a public forum. Ladder is a public forum, because you are conversing with many different people. Streaming for obvious reasons can be added to this.

This puts it into the socially acceptable category, as well as the professionally acceptable category.

And yes, I've never seen the value in insulting anyone. It's not fun, it doesn't help anyone, it actually makes me feel really bad about myself, and the few times I have insulted people, when I was younger, I've always apologised. I don't really understand why anyone would do it. Even if someone insults me, I usually don't feel the need to insult back. I just can't see it leading anywhere good. That being said I do enjoy good banter, or trash talking, but there's definitely a line to draw, and Destiny went well past it.
