I hate threads like this. The only reason they are ever created is so the OP can use the forums or reddit or whatever medium as his personal army. The OP did not need to post this unless OP wanted to bring some sort of harm to Destiny and the team. This goes the same for the whole Orb situation. OP could have reported Destiny on BNet, reported him to Quantic and even to Destiny's sponsors himself but instead the OP decided to post it on TL to have the users do his dirty work for him. If anything posts like this should be instantly deleted from TL because all they do is cause drama within the community. You can even tell from the wording by the OP that he was trying to get some sort of reaction out of the TL community. All posts like this does is ruin the community. Let the team/sponsors handle this on their own and if you have a problem with Destiny or any player just report it yourself rather than using TL as your own personal army.

If you're Razer and you get these emails, do you:

a) drop your lucrative sponsorship of multiple esports teams, including Quantic who currently has an extremely popular foreigner who has broken into the Korean scene?

or

b) request Quantic drop/suspend/reprimand Destiny?

Razer is not going to damage itself over this, that'd be bad business. Contacting them is not going to kill esports. Like people have said though, this sort of behavior being picked up on by a major publication or something of that ilk will actually do terrible terrible damage.

If I am Razer, I'd be much closer to (A) than (B). No reason to hang around this scene if I have to dealt with this shit on weekly basis.

this is the internet, professional gamer or not - expect things like this.
since you don't like his 'bm' i doubt you'll ever go watch him and therefore he has lost one potential viewer.
and also you can report them ingame for such behavior.

If you think Destiny swears/offends/whatever too much, don't watch his stream. It is that simple. If Destiny thinks it's OK to use words like nigger, gook, etc, on his stream that's his damn right. However distasteful you or I find it. Freedom of speech.

Personally I don't see why you would routinely use words like nigger or faggot, I'm one of those types that does go out of his way a bit to avoid offending people.

However, I'm not entirely convinced Destiny's behaviour is bad for esports, I think it has little to no effect on it at all. If we want esports to grow (soon to be the most cliché sentence), by definition it will include a wider variety of characters and viewpoints. Does any of the world's sports stop growing because players misbehave (in your view that is)?

You're right, for esports to grow, we need to make sure we allow racism to be expressed freely by professionals. After all, we wouldn;t want to alienate racist viewers.

For esports to grow we need to handle racism better. Running to the sponsors, the foundation of esports, is not beneficial in anyway.

People are way too sensitive. Everyone wants to point the finger at someone doing something distasteful and make a big deal out of it because drama is entertaining to people with nothing better to do than criticize others. He's not hurting e-sports or destroying the community. It would be one thing if he was cursing and swearing at major events and tournaments but it's just a public stream. He's within his own rights to say and do what he wants in a game. It's also up to Quantic to decide what is and isn't acceptable and TL to decide whether or not to list his stream.

The real problem I see here is people running to the sponsors. It is becoming more and more common for people to complain to the sponsors whenever they become butt hurt over a situation evolving a player. If the first response is to mail Razer, telling them how disgusted you are and threatening not to purchase from them in the future you're hurting e-sports. It's not like Razer actually cares about the finer details of the community, I seriously doubt they are familiar with the reputations and track records of many of these players. They're more interested in having their brand name attach to popular players and teams and not dealing with the gritty details. But when tons of overly sensitive people flood their email with complaints their not going to investigate the situation, they're just going to give the team shit and threaten to pull their funding.

People think they're so high and mighty going around the team and the community and straight to the sponsors but their actions are only hurting e-sports. Razer is like a child with a nail gun, it doesn't know what it's doing with regards to understanding the community and it's members but it stands to do a lot of damage because of how much influence it has over teams that need its sponsorship.

This type of reaction cannot become a norm. If you're angry about a player's conduct on stream complain to TL and maybe they'll get their stream de-listed. That's something that a player like Destiny, who makes a large portion of his revenue through streaming, would be affected by without totally destroying his career. If that doesn't work, email Quantic, the team that actually deals with Destiny on a personal level. It actually gives him incentive to control himself when his stream is linked on TL or at least lets him know the consequences certain actions can have. But seriously, stop running to the sponsors, telling mommy how someone hurt your feelings and in turn destroying someone's fucking career. If this becomes the norm sponsors will start to think this is a community not worth supporting.

Personally I don't think Destiny did anything wrong and everyone is becoming way too sensitive, so what if he said something offensive, you don't have to watch his stream. If you don't like it, turn it off. I'll take your complaints seriously when he starts cussing at MLG or any other major event he goes to while representing Quantic and Razer.

I wonder who really have been offended by this. Why one's name calling would affect on other people? I just don't get it. I can't find people saying, "I am gay player and I find this offensive behavior" "I am black player and I find this offensive behavior" "I am korean player and I find this offensive behavior".

Why is there even an argument about this? If this community wants esports to grow you will not support racist/homophobic language being spouted by a representative of the community. Maybe you don't like that idea - maybe you even feel it violates free speech - well, that's shitty, but potential/current sponsors aren't going to look at this thread (which is at the top of TL right now) and say "hmm everyone here makes some really good points about linguistics, and that Destiny fellow really is a free thinker!". They're going to say "fuck sponsoring these people it isn't worth it and we're going to get in trouble." Everyone here has different views on what is acceptable or not, but unless you're going to fund the whole scene you have to assume this sport will not grow unless you cut shit that's unacceptable in the public domain (no matter if you think it's acceptable or not).
over this or anything, but come on, stop claiming words don't mean anything when you specifically select certain words
As a sidenote, I think it's pretty funny that people are claiming Destiny isn't racist when he specifically used "gook" after the poster used Korean to type "GG". To me, that's a situation where Destiny picked the word he knew would most likely cause the most offense and harm to someone who is Asian or of Asian descent. For Destiny it wasn't just a word, it was a word he knew had the chance to cause the maximum amount of damage because it denigrates Asians - and that should be totally unacceptable. This isn't the first time I've seen him do this either. His choice of language when bming changes depending upon what server he's on. Now I don't think Destiny should be fired when you think you're playing a person of a specific race or culture.

To all those who think to themselves or comment publicly that it is not a big deal, you are wrong. It is a big deal. It is a much bigger deal than losing to an all in. It takes courage by the OP to post this, and we should be thankful the OP had the courage.

The OP typing in korean when he speaks english in order to attempt to bait a racist response out of a player after cheesing him and probably bm'ing earlier on doesn't take courage and it says a lot more about the OP than it does destiny, words have context and if you seriously believe that they were meant as anything other than a vent you really are stupid.

As i said before, if that offends you turn on the offensive language filter, if it's off it is assumed that you are mature enough to handle offensive language.

I feel, based on how I've seen you at live events and your stream, that you are a good dude who I could be friends with had our paths crossed.

tl;dr version -

I'm asking that we, as a community, take a look at the bigger problems and not focus on things as meaningless as words. Words only mean what you allow them to mean and will only hurt you if you let them. Intention and context will always outweigh verbage. Peace and thigh grease.

If we, as a communicty, want to be taken seriously, we should not tolerate 'people' like Destiny, whom claim to be 'professionals' to make fun of the entire community and be racist whenever they feel like it.
People like him, the pro's, are THE FACE OF SC2. If we ever want to be taken seriously, nonsense like this mustn't happen.

THe part above the TLDR says enough about your motivations on this post. You are not relevant, being a fanboy.

This is totally outrageous, If we want our community to grow we need to start thinking before talking/posting. We need to take special care on the selection of words we use when we want to insult/offend someone. I mean, we want them to feel bad but not too bad.

Here's a list of words we all should eliminate because some people's feelings might get hurt beyond our original intention of hurting them.

faggot - offensive to the gay community
nigger - offensive to the black community
gook - offensive to asians(?)
spic - offensive to hispanics
retarded - offensive to mentally challenged
rape - offensive to rape victims
snipe - offensive to war veterans
nuke - offensive to descendants of hiroshima survivors
grammar nazi - offensive to descendants of concentration camp survivors
murdered - offensive to people who've experienced death in family
cancer on the community - offensive to people who've suffered from cancer

Also, don't do drugs and eat vegetables, ok?

The fact that you are comparing the offensiveness of the word "murdered" to people who've experienced murder in the family, with words like "faggot" and "nigger" is completely absurd. There were not millions of people enslaved and systematically abused on the basis that someone in their family had been murdered. People don't get beaten to death on account of them being a Hiroshima survivor. They do for "being a faggot".

Actually, I've lived in Japan, and study Japan as part of my studies. Nuclear survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki are systematically discriminated in Japan, and talking about nukes as something casually, is absolutely not taken lightly in regards to people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. His points can be said to be valid, especially about nukes. I don't agree with the motion of "being offended" by specific words myself.

Oh, really? That's enlightening, thanks.

The main point however is that words like "faggot" and "nigger" and "gook" are derogatory BY DEFINITION. Words like "nuke" or "murder" are neutral without context.

I don't even think young people in the US see faggot as offensive anymore. It's just become a general way to insult someone in the past few years. In high school everything was 'gay' and everyone needed to stop acting like 'faggots'

The thing about Destiny is that while he preaches the necessity of 'empathy' as an ingredient in winning at life, he is woefully unconcerned with the fact that the dumb shit he says can actually have a negative affect on people. So while I'd never consider the guy a racist, I can still consider him ignorant, hypocritical, and in possession of an acute lack of self-awareness.

We all know half a dozen people like this in real life and tend to avoid them. I believe the word we use is assholes. It makes me wonder why he's so popular.

As a community, we have two options: One is to treat Starcraft as a random video game. The second is to make it as professional as possible and be proud of it. I actually don't play any other game anymore or follow any other community except Starcraft because I hoped that this community is different to others that I'd involved before moving into Starcraft.

I'm not disappointed in Destiny at all. Just disappointed in Quantic; because they're the one that makes decision whether to allow this to happen. I've always been a fan of Quantic and hope the don't fall down the path of a "personality and bm" team.

Is that true?

Yup, that's why his excuse of words don't matter is so laughable. He has multiple times picked the words he knows will do the most damage possible when bming others.

This shit he says often isn't done for humor, it's done out of anger and that's really not cool.

I don't understand the courage part lol

That is plain depressing.

I am 100% for free speech and freedom for that matter, I believe people should be allowed to say what they want.

That is also why you should be a decent person and choose not to say some things otherwise someone else will just respond equally stupidly and it goes on and on. Because I am fully within my rights to say 'Destiny is a racist shit bag who should jsut fucking go back into the hole he crawled out of and die'. Why? Because you are claiming that is acceptable language and behavior. It really isn't - well not if you actually want to ever earn a decent living. If you want to be living off everyone else at the bottom of the pile then go for it.

Be civil before someone instead of raging at you verbally actually does rage at you physically. Personally I don't see the difference and if someone raged at me in real life like they do online I think they would discover why you don't do it.

1. Destiny says he doesn't give a fuck about the community.
2. Destiny curses and slurs.
3. Community outrage.
4. 12 year olds think Destiny gives a fuck about them (see point 1).
5. 12 year olds make thread about how Destiny is in for a world of hurt if he doesn't clean up his ways.
6. Destiny obviously doesn't give a fuck.

7. Crying occurs.

you have no idea what freedom of speech means do you?

It does not mean you can go around calling people faggots and niggers left and right

yes it does

No it doesn't. You're not allowed to use speech to marginalize others. Freedom of Speech is to protect well formed arguments and ideas, it has no obligation to give a platform to nonsensical hatred and bigotry.

I thought you were going to make a sensible point, then I was disappointed.

Freedom of Speech actually does protect hate speech, it just doesn't protect individuals from facing social repercussion for what they say. If nobody wants to employ someone who uses racial slurs, that man just won't be employed.

It absolutely does NOT protect hate speech. In fact hate speech is a very clearly delineated exemption to that protection. I feel like there are a lot of people who didn't actually watch that video that JoJo linked.

1. It will give you a good 5 minute break from the thread which everyone probably needs.
2. It is very well thought out.

so to recap if Razer hypothetically stopped sponsoring people over this:

It would be the fault of the people who contacted them, not the fault of Destiny for ruining it for others with his actions.

And if they took an active interest in SC2 and saw this thread, instead of being alerted about it, who's fault is it then?

For a start, those emailing the sponsors should take no blame. The logic that they're causing E-sports harm by informing the sponsors about the actions of someone under their banner is ass-backwards.

One day someone with influence may decide to take it beyond the scope of these forums, and then it's done for. A journalist with an influential blog on a site like Forbes might decide to one day make an entry about one of these situations which keep cropping up, because these threads certainly are popular. Would we go and post in the comments asking him to take it down because it might hurt the scene, perhaps? No, that would be retarded. Keeping it quiet and sweeping it under the rug to "protect E-sports" is not an option. Prevention is the only sensible option.

This is a warning to not take an insular view on this type of situation - I've seen posts in places not connected to SC2 who will email sponsors at the drop of a hat and have done in the past. The argument that it's just the internets will not wash with the general public, they'll see what's going on here and kill your credibility before giving you the time of day. You'll be tarred with the same brush which was used on the fighting game community recently.

You should be pointing your fingers at Destiny and other high profile players for constantly giving them reasons to do it. Destiny doesn't say it, people have no reason to send mail. You should also point fingers at the teams choosing these types of players on purpose - I would be far more suprised to see a member of Team Liquid taking part in these sort of antics that I would members of other teams because I know TL use their discretion.

Amazing, amazing post. I don't understand why people always feel the need to ignore bad things that happen. They need to be addressed and responded to accordingly.

Simply ignoring this because "IT'S DESTINY GUYS XDDDDD" is stupid. If Quantic doesn't want to do anything, which is extremely clear considering they picked him up for his abrasive personaility and since they have done nothing in the past to correct his behavior, then going to the sponsors is a must.

THIS^, 100% agree with both these guys.
Sent my complaint email in Good luck to quantic and Destishitty.

Yeah, I don't usually talk like this, but holy shit, how mad? You guys act like Quantic and Destiny owe you (the people who are complaining about his bm) something.

Really? I saw a large potential Stormfront population on here long before Destiny. It was part of the reason I stopped posting as much and went back to lurking. Casual racism is accepted in a significant portion of the community. As long as you're not assaulting people in the street.... Or at least not where you can get caught.

Let's all just call each other cracker, chink, nigger, spic, kraut, frog, and cheesemakers when addressing somebody. Why not? Why's Destiny so special? I want to do it too. I don't see individuals. I just see race. If I'm not able to judge from your handle, I'll just assign you a race, turban head. We should all make signatures. Here, just copy and paste the appropriate line:

Whites Rule!
Asians Rule!
Blacks Rule!
Hispanics Rule!

Then, we can finally be honest with each other since we've stripped away the slang to expose the race-based identities we all want to attack and embrace. This is freedom! We don't really know each other beyond our screennames anyway. Tell each other how you really feel.

You know what I really hate? Mixed-race babies. Anyone else want to share?

What I LOVE is all the new accounts which have been created today and the only posts they have are in this thread. Coincidentally, all of them are also the people arguing vehemently against Destiny and emailing the sponsors. Could it be possible that one guy is posting in this thread with multiple accounts? Hmmm......
