Here is my letter to Razer (support-us@razersupport.com) regarding Destiny's current and past use of racial slurs. I encourage everyone else to submit letters of a similar theme.

Tolerating racism allows it to grow and foster. By propagating racism, Destiny does far more harm than good.

Let's make racism an intolerable offence within the community - far more sponsors will show interest in SC2, if fighting bigotry for its own sake isn't enough.

Hello,

I would like to express my disappointment in Razer's decision to sponsor the Starcraft 2 player Destiny, and his team Quantic, in light of racist comments regularly made on his stream.

Like many players, I see his comments as representative of the type of culture his sponsors wish to foster. I consider continued sponsorship of Destiny, either directly or through his team Quantic, as tacit approval by Razer of the use of racial slurs meant to divide and inflame.

As such, I cannot morally justify continued use and purchase of Razer products.

All the best,
- Steve Campbell

Yes, I'm sure the sponsors will hate to see how one of the most popular SC2 players got that way.

The fact is, Destiny is popular because he's hilarious, and because he breaks the manner mold. Most of us talk like this in person with our friends anyway.

Haters gonna hate.

Its this sort of immaturity that makes e-sports less respectable. Good job on holding us back folks.

Why do we not just censor everything so that noone can be offensive to anyone. Grow a thicker skin, that's all. Opinions does not hurt anyone or anything, actions based on opinions does.

A much less "severe" situation in the "real world", imo. That's what needs to happen.

Actual players like Kobe Bryant have used terms also seen in the OP to very little repercussion.

Oh, really?

How's 100k dollars?

http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2011/04/kobe_bryant_fined_for_homophob.html

Compare that 100k to how much money that guy gets paid and already has been paid. He can probably wipe his ass with 1,000 dollar bills and not even notice a change in his bank account.

This is an irrelevant strawman. A 100k fine is a hefty penalty, even for a wealthy person, and is the league showing how serious the incident was. There were a lot of human and civil rights groups who were furious over the incident.

for Kobe $100K fine is about the equivalent of a $30 parking ticket for an average income earner.
+1 though for using cool sounding phrases like "irrelevent strawman" though..wp!

The point of the post is that there was a public outcry which motivated the league to action in levying a fine on the hefty side of their scale. The base salary of the player in question is irrelevant to whether or not the league took action that was more heavy-handed than fines for other, similar actions in the past. It was used to establish that this is clearly something that runs afoul of the contemporary public and accrues punishment, whether or not you are successful.

Do you think if Kobe decried the public criticism and kept openly using the word "fag" and other racial slurs in competitive play, things would be going so well for him right now? Consider this was a 100k fine for a slight slip up in the heat of the moment. Now extrapolate that to a consistent and intentional application of racial slurs and other commonly accepted offensive terms.

I do not understand why the phrase "irrelevant strawman" somehow detracted from my point. It's a rather common term of art? I don't get it.

Eh... I think rather than my opinion being an "irrelevant strawman" we simply disagree. From my perspective 100k wasn't a meaningful amount of money when I compare it to his level of wealth. I also think kobe is not a complete idiot and either realized he shouldn't continue to do things like that or the team's PR guys stepped in and explained to him very clearly that he could not continue to do that because future repurcussions would likely be much worse. And by worse I don't mean the league fining him but rather the fans/potential sponsorship money lost would become a noticable problem. I highly doubt the 100k fine itself mattered to him at all.

We are in agreement with each other, then. An internet first!

No. Do not do this. It hurts the scene rather than makes the situation better. Take your emails to Quantic instead.

lol how does it hurt the scene if idiots dont get sponsor anymore?

How about they stop sponsoring new people since they view the risks of negative backlash being to high for it to be worth it?

Yes, so let's hide every bad quality of the community from them. That couldn't possibly backfire.

Or we handle it ourselves without involving the sponsors by contacting teams and organizations. Where`s the backfire in doing that?

because it's unfair to the sponsors.

though I'm sure they already know, If I was investing money into a team and its players I'd like to know if one of them was using racial or homophobic slurs on an almost daily basis.

also guys, you can post on the TL website feedback if you'd like to post your thoughts on why Destiny should be defeatured from TL.

Soooooo many instances where he has used racial slurs and over offensive things and all you could find is a couple videos of him doing mild swearing with no offense directed?

I'd be surprised if razer gives a shit about him using mature language on his stream.

yes, write to sponsors. Let's punish the whole team for your viewpoint.

we are not trying to punish the team, we are trying to put pressure on the team to enact disciplinary measures
on one of their professional gamers, Destiny, who did an unprofessional thing

Writing to sponsors is the worst way ever to respond to such a situation. People like you do it because it lets you misrepresent the scene since you know that when sponsors get emails from 20 angry nerds they somehow get deluded into thinking that a large portion of the community is outraged when its really just 20 angry nerds. But its the internet so what can I expect. Make sure to include in the email that 99% of the community doesn't think the issue is a big enough deal to email them about it.

This doesn't actually mean that calling someone a "gook" is immoral or even especially offensive, since morality should always be judged by intent, it just means that it's pragmatic to disallow it because there are a lot of uptight people that get offended whenever they hear it.

The problem with your logic is that this is real life, not a cartoon. Destiny is not saying these things to be funny, he is saying them with malicious intent and no regard for the person on the other end of his attacks.

Razer and Quantic are leaving themselves wide open by continuing to trust that Destiny's idiotic rants won't result in something that requires an apology by the execs.

A few months ago Morhaime had to make a public apology for some homophobic crap said and celebrated during one of their big events. As a result, Blizzard is now hyper aggressive about stomping on homophobes. If I were Destiny, Quantic and Razer I'd be more concerned about Blizzard's official response to the non stop homophobic drivel that spews from Destiny's stream and that he expresses while on Blizzard's BNet2 "social gaming platform".

He says the word Faggot THAT IS IT. Seriously WTF you make it sound like he sits on his computer for 5 hours a day and talks about how gay people are ruining this country and how Dem' der fagz is gonna give me the gay and dem supzer aids in the ass hole. For fucks same he says faggot some times holy shit that is it you are a fucking retarded if you believe destiny is homophobic or racist.

Like serious you should probly go to some kind of mental hospital because you are quite literally retarded you probably need some kind of maid to clean your ass because idk how you function with this kind of thought.

You have mental problems if you believe this is the only homophobic word Destiny has ever typed into BNet2.

Blizzard took a huge PR hit when Morhaime had to apologize. Personally, I do not care. Blizzard does though. Morhaime's time is valuable and he has better things to do that apologize for homophobic activity revolving around HIS gaming platform. If Destiny continues with his homophobic rantings he'll be removed from BNet2 which is owned by Activision-BLizzard.

http://www.gamebreakers.co/videos/blizzard-president-mike-morhaime-apologizes-for-homophobic-language-at-blizzcon/

This personal attack is pretty hilarious though. Nice obfuscation. WP!

Victim blaming is disgusting. A minority is allowed to be offended when a derogatory slur is used.
