And why wouldn't they be prosecuted? You can sue the hell out of them.
All depend of if there is a legally made and written contract or not. In France, gentlemen's agreement is nothing. Only written laws and contracts matter.
and they don't matter at all if the company has no money to be extracted through legal action

i always thought verbal contracts were just as binding as in writing.. just harder to prove.
I'm no lawyer but doesn't it just depend if you have a civil law country (like Germany, maybe france too) or a common law country (US, UK)? Common law countries have more wiggle room while civil law have clear boundaries and procedures you need to follow.

we had a ton of discussion by cartooneys when the whole stephano/complexity thing came up, was quite sad so let's not go over it again
This story seems wrong in so many ways. 1. Why would anyone pay expenses out of their own pockets for flights and hotel (food or gas would be more understandable, as the cost might vary)? 2. Why would anyone make you pay out of their own pockets just to scam you? What in the world would they earn from this? Its not like they are getting anything out of it. I would understand it more if they ran off with your price money or something. If this story actually ends up being true, it means they where scamming you just to be assholes..which seems unlikely. 3. The countdown on the site is to 1. april, no matter what country you're from (meaning its 4 hours and 39 minutes left for me, while others already have reached zero) 4. The post was posted on 1. april

As far as I know, it is indeed true in country who are under common law type of legal system (like USA), but not under civilian or Roman law (like France). At least, I know that binding verbal agreements are quite uncommon in France, but I do confess that I'm not a specialist of any kind about law.
You guys should stop trusting random french teams... we have a lot of assholes who want to make "big teams with pro sponsors" but once they realize that they won't be able to pay, well they stop paying. Remember Virus ? Back in the wc3 days there was even a team which was sponsored by ONE man only, he was paying players with his own salary, it worked for some months and it exploded when he was broke. Whatever happens just ask contracts and don't trust random people on the internet.

Are you serious? This is his employer, and he hasn't been in able to get in touch with them for two weeks. How can you expect someone to wait more than two weeks when they're not getting wages promised or even the opportunity to communicate with their boss.
He is most definitely in his own right and i'm not trying to defend eclypsia, not being in touch and not paying their players for two weeks is just unprofessional and shouldn't happen. But remember it is pro-gaming we are talking about, there are so few teams able to provide regular income to their player that i think we shouldn't bring them down at the first sight of weakness.
There has been a lot of scammers, insecure and attention needy people starting "pro" team, i just wished eclypsia wasn't one of those and since we don't have any details besides what Welmu says i think we should hold on the pitchfork at least a little bit.
If they didn't react within a day or two then it's safe to say those guys are scumbags...it's just sad to see stuff like that still happening in esports and i doubt it's the last time
Good luck to all the players after the incoming disband of Eclypsia (and btw the team lasted what ? A month top ? really sad : / )

You need to do better than that ^-^
If you really think that this is an April Fool's joke, then you are delusional. Think about it. If it were a joke, it's a joke that HURTS their organization more than anything because even if the players say "LOL JK APRIL FIRST HAHA" anyone with some common sense knows that it is not going to end in any way positive for Eclypsia.
It is very common for organizations to have their employees pay out of their own pocket, especially less established ones that are basically living paycheck-to-paycheck from sponsors. They might not be able to pay you now, but they will reimburse you next month, or whenever they get money from their sponsors.
They didn't make him pay out of his own pocket to scam him. My guess would be they took sponsor money and pocketed it and gave nothing to the players.
This was "posted on the 1st of April", because Team Liquid runs on Korea time (a concept that baffles me to this day, but whatever). Welmu is from Finland. The time in Finland as of this post is 8:31PM, March 31st. Not April 1st.

This is a terrible post. You obviously have no clue what you are talking about. Why the hell would someone want to make their team look awful, and possibly have the whole community shun them etc. That would be downright stupid. An april fools joke is in jest, its not used to totally fuck up relations with a team and the community around it. You have alot to learn dude. Like for example, your thought process on them scamming him is just absurd.

They made him pay it out of his own pocket so that they didnt fucking have to. They most likely lead him along, and he paid the trip. If they paid the trip knowing they were just in it for sponsor money, then they would be out the couple hundred euros that it costed to send welmu. Now read closely....if Welmu paid his own trip, they are not out a fucking cent....get it now?

As Firesilver said already above, both Welmu and Eclypsia have lots to gain out of this. Do you really think this is a good april fool's joke? Think a little.

I hope you mean "have nothing to gain out of doing this." Because it only hurts their organization.

There is a world-wide governing body called "the law." It's illegal to withhold payments to employees. As long as players are wise enough to make sure they have contracts drafted up and signed there is no problem, only a bit of a hassle because you need to take care of business yourself.
No governing body at this point would change the current state of eSports because joke organizations can get prosecuted by the law anyway. A governing body wouldn't really change anything.

You are right, but i would facepalm even harder if this would end up being an april fools joke. At least put some effort if you are going to do something.
