So recently, with all the hype and popularity surrounding the korean culture and koreans on the blog forums, I've decided to make a blog where TL users who are curious about the korean and american culture can ask questions. Or about any asian culture in general, even though the answers I provide may not be 100% accurate. I also answer questions about everything, from sports, to math, and girl problems. And without further ado, let's get started!~ Hwaiting!~
FAQ: What is a Korean American?
A Korean American is a korean person living in America. There are different types of Korean Americans. There is a generation 1.0 korean American who lived in Korea and came to America. There is generation 1.5, which is like your parents came from Korea and gave birth to you here, or like you came here from Korea at a young age(I think). Generation 2.0 is your parents who are Korean was born in America, and you were also born in America.

mmmmm, I'm not really annoyed. I only get annoyed/pissed off/rage when they try to hit on our women.
How angry are you when they ask if you are north korean.
Idk, never got asked this. I guess people don't troll me enough, since I'm out of middle school. Most people are educated/old enough to know that this kind of question only exists to get some kind of negative response from the other person, therefore do not ask this.
How angry are you when they say you are chinese I haven't been called Chinese since I was in Middle School. Most people are educated enough, and California is a culturally diverse place that people can tell the difference between Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese. Sadly though, people can't tell the difference between Asians and Pacific Islanders so you get a lot of Pacific Islanders being called Chinese.

You didnt say what type of Korean AMerican you were.
and do you play starcraft?
do you feel that as a korean you have the genetic advantage when it comes to SC?
be honest.

what is the most played videogame console? (dont count pc's)
Among Americans, the Xbox360 is the most played console. The Xbox360 is also the favorite console of nerds. Among Koreans, it's probably the wii. Most of the koreans I know don't own consoles because they just came from Korea, or they are all on the PC. Koreans are also cheap, so they do not want to pay $60 for a game, therefore they play PC games, mostly free PC games. Also, mobile games are more popular among Koreans than all of the above(in the US), which is why WCG is going mobile games only.

I am a generation 1.5 Korean American.

No.

Yes, because as a Korean American, my parents have taught me that Koreans are the superior race of the world, as seen by their incessant pride and chatter about the accomplishments of the Koreans, despite them being such a small nation. Therefore, I am led to believe that Koreans are superior, not genetically(I can't say yes to this even though I believe, because it will offend people), but because of their culture. Basically, what I mean by culture is, if you don't get straight A's at school, or be the best player on your tennis team, then you will get your ass beat.
Korean parents are realistic though. If you are an average Korean American, your height will be near 5'8, 5'9, so parents won't ask you to be the next Kobe Bryant because a height disadvantage makes this goal unrealistic. However, with Linsanity, the new generation of Koreans are not safe. They will be asked to excel harder than they were asked to excel before.

My family specifically is considered to be on the lower spectrum of Koreans when talking about wealth. Koreans are richer than they point out to be. My family would be considered to be in the 1% of the U.S. population in terms of wealth, but even this is considered really poor, for the average Korean American. (From my view of the world, since I have only lived in rich suburbs my entire life, and all my korean school mates are richer than I am.) Technically speaking, my family makes like over $120K per year at the least, and don't pay taxes because my dad is a freelancer and therefore puts unemployed on his whatever he does for taxes, and takes 100% of what he makes. My mom works for a Korean company, which means that they do some underhanded dealings where she only makes "minimum wage." They give her most of her wages in cash.

How do your views of Korean cultural superiority make peace with the undeniable fact that a great majority of Korean culture is a derivative of Chinese culture?
How do you feel about relying on your parents to be the font of knowledge and authority concerning the racial hierarchy of the world?

Lol, should be lucky they don't live in Norway. A brand new game for 360/PS3 is 100$. No joke. And even for Wii and handheld it's more than 60.
Ok, on to the question, this could be asked to japanese-americans too, I suppose. Basically, how do you feel about the recent surge of South Korea in worldwide pop culture? Are you at all offended or annoyed by non-koreans being obsessed with korea and its culture, but in a superficial way (such as "wapanese" people, or weeabos, but with Korea, obviously).

I used to be like fuck you! Don't make kpop into the new Britney spears, to woot! Korean influence is rising in the world. To now, I love it. Because only Chinese girls really listen to kpop/watch korean dramas. And this means that you get to meet plenty of cool Chinese chicks who share something in common with you, therefore you have an easier time connecting to plenty of the hot chinese chicks very fast.

I can't speak for the entire world, I can only speak of the foreigners in America who like K-pop. The people who aren't asian, that I know, who like K-pop, are losers. Like no Korean out there likes German music or African music. You only like that shit if you are a loser, who tries to be cool/connect with others because you've been outcasted by your own race. Therefore, I don't like these people. Also it annoys me that people try to be like/dress like asians when they are not asian. It's not natural, and they are trying too hard.

You hate them for being smooth?

No, I hate them because I don't believe in inter-racial marriages. White must marry with white, chinese with chinese, japanese with japanese, koreans with korean, black with black.
I don't know about Korea now, but back then, Korean people were very racist, and I'm sure a lot of them are still racist. You have an uphill battle trying to fit in/emerge into Korean culture. Other Koreans will put up a wall when dealing with foreigners. The whole "nice" thing is a wall they put up too. Koreans act differently around foreigners than they do around other koreans.
|
Yeah, from what I've heard there is a fair bit of subtle racism. (exclusion etc)
Why are you against interracial marriage? Although I respect your right to feel that way, disliking interracial marriage purely on the basis of color is quite odd nowadays, and is considered sort of racist/antique.

I'm not a girl, so I wouldn't know. But I've never seen Korean girls hook up with Chinese guys. They hook up with white/black guys more than chinese guys. Sad, but yet true story. Chinese girls are more accepting of Korean guys because they are usually hotter, and there's that OMG korean guys are so cool from the kpop and kdrama they watch. (Yes, you watch K-pop. It's visual music.)

I have already screenshotted and forwarded the relevant information to the IRS. Everyone needs to do their part to get beautiful America out of its current conundrum. It's absolutely not fair that your parents are dodging their fair share of the burden while probably buying as many foreign-produced goods as they can like a parasitic leech on the ass of Lady Liberty. I bet your living room is cluttered with Samsungs and your driveway clogged with Hyundais.

It's only odd in the U.S. because the U.S. is exposed to so many diverse cultures and at school you were taught to be more open to others. I'm not sure why other Koreans are against interracial marriage, but I know why I am. Ever since I was young, my parents have openly condemned marrying other races. They really harshly did not want me to marry non-asians, and they didn't want me to marry other asians too, but not as harshly as non-asians. Older koreans are very openly racist. Especially the ones in America. They think black people and mexicans are stereotypically trash. Whites are fared in a better light because of the power they hold in America. And you don't want your children marrying trash, and you drill that they are trash into their kids' heads. Also doesn't help that when a Korean comes to America, they aren't really exposed to other cultures. They go live in communities with high populations of Koreans, and never really learn English, and live in mini-Korea, even though they live in the U.S. Therefore they never are really exposed to other races, and therefore racist from the lack of communiaction between the two races. My mom after 20 years of living in America knows very very very little English, and still thinks all Mexicans and Black people are thugs who are going to shoot her.

Nice dodge on that endowment question.
I was fucking paranoid about this when I was younger so I got out a ruler and measured. I heard average in U.S. was 6.5, mine was 7.5. And then I was like cool, I have a big dick, and never worried about it ever again. I might be very fortunate though. I don't think other Koreans have a dick as big as mine. Koreans are very paranoid about their dicks. That's why they never ask other Koreans to compare dick sizes.

I don't care. And no1's going to call me out on it in real life, so I will never change, and I will always publicly be a non-racist. You just keep that shit inside your head. There was a study and they found out that a majority of Americans, deep inside, are publicly non-racist just like I am, but racist deep inside, and this gives me a reason to believe that how I feel is okay.

Where you are on the social ladder depends on how successful you are. There's this crazy retarded thought in Korean people's heads that the richer you are, the higher social standing you have. The better the college you go to, the higher social standing you have. Rich people have higher social status than those less fortunate. Those who went to good colleges have higher social status than those who didn't go to college. That's why koreans try so hard, and parents ask their kids to try so hard. Don't find this to be true with newer gen koreans though. Although I'm pretty fucking sure they think this way inside and judge based on how much money you have, and what college you go into/go to. I do this.

In korea, idk. But Korea has a high suicide rate.
I got ADD and dont think I would have a chance seeing how competetive you are and only the best is good enough. How do you deal with people like me with neurodevelopmental disabilities?
Depends. If you're my brother, or a friend, I treat you with realness. For others, they don't give a rat's ass about you. You're special ed. You get treated nicely, but no1 really cares about your problems. Can be said about everyone in the world though.

I'm not a girl so I can't say for a girl's perspective, but for a guy, guys don't care if other korean guys date non-korean girls. But in America, we care about girls being stolen because we don't do inter-racial relationships. That means that there are not that many hot korean girls available out there. And if a non-korean takes a korean girl, that just lessens the number of hot korean girls. It's okay if a korean guy does it, but it feels like the enemy is taking one of our women if a non-korean guy takes a girl because of the low number of quality korean girls. Most korean girls in America are ugly because of no plastic surgery, and the pretty ones can stay in Korea and be successful. No need to come to America to get a career. Just marry some rich korean guy.
|
Why is it that Korean-American girls constantly have drama revolving around them?
Korean girls fucking love dick. And like all girls, they want some hot steamy sex deep inside. But they are looked down upon if they express in any way, shape, or form, their desire for sex. Therefore they try to suppress their sexual frustrations, and become mega sluts or drama queens. All Korean girl drama is drama for dick. True story. It relates in some way. Just think about it.

All I can tell from this thread is that koreans are just chinese people but XTREEEEME.

Guys who do it are seen as gay. Girls who do it are seen as sluts. It's okay if you're an athlete though.

A lot of koreans I know in america are obsessed with japan. Similar sentiment in Korea?

It's actually pretty shocking how racist this thread is. Assuming that 0123456789 is anywhere close to an average representation of a Korean-American (an assumption I'm pretty sure is wrong, given my experiances with Korean-Canadians), they're actually much more racist than even actual Koreans.
Your racism isn't justified, it's actually disgusting.
|

Depends. Older people don't like Japan because japan once controlled Korea and raped Korean women. But if they meet and get to know a Japanese person, they like them. And they love Japanese stuff, like Japanese anime, cars, culture, etc. Younger people love their stuff too like anime, jpop, etc. The whole "obsessed" thing depends on the person. Some people like kpop, some people love kpop, some people are obsesssed with kpop.

You must be like 8 and don't know how racism works in the real world. Racism is like stereotypes. In my head, I have this thought. It's this thought that most black people are people who go to jail. Let's say I meet a black woman. My first impression of this black woman is that she went to jail. I get to know her, and I find out she is a good person. Do I still think she went to jail? no. Do I still think that most black people went to jail? Yes. Is this hate? No. Do I hate black people? No. It's a general misconception I have. I like her, am I going to marry her? Yes. Are my parents going to say no at first? Yes. Would they still say no after they got to know her? No. But would she have to try extra hard, harder than a korean girl to impress? Yes. Would they think she went to jail? Yes.
Koreans are very closed off as a race to other races, therefore make ridiculous assumptions and put up walls in front of other races. This is racism of the korean people. There's no holocaustic hate. For a non korean person going to Korea, it's going to be their job to break down these walls and misconceptions people have about different races. There's going to be walls. People aren't going to as open to you, as they might be to korean people. It's kind of a hard thing to do, to fight through this misconception called "racism", 8 year old boy.

How do Koreans view males with long hair? Like epic long not longish.

Why do you get pissed of when white men hit on "your" women?

Heck, I know 3 guys who moved here from korea in like 4th grade who have told me "no, that's bullshit, we don't have to marry in our race." Although I understand where you got the belief from, that in of itself doesn't really justify or legitimize it.

I have a belief. To me there's no wrong and right. Only you and others have classified it as wrong or right. And not 100% of koreans share the same belief. But most do.

This seems less like "ask a korean-american anything" and more like "ask a racist, sexist, dick-measuring doucebag anything."

This comment makes you look like a douchebag. Even more so when you spell douchebag wrong.

I'm going to marry a korean woman, I'm hispanic. My question is, deal with it.
|
You're just out of middle school and calling other people 8? Negative stereotypes aren't harmless. Just because it's not holoucastic hate doesn't mean it's not disgusting and idiotic.
I live in Korea, and your mindset is basically that of an older ujeossi, not of someone of the younger generation. It kinda makes sense since your main exposure to Korean culture is just your parents (older generation).
All I'm saying is that your mindset IS racist and limited. And it's not representative of Koreans, or even gyopos.

How you has problem getting elo when u korean?
You mentioned that chinese girls have a thing for korean guys. How you fail to get or impress unichan?

Make sure to satisfy her. Or else you will have fully looking korean babies.

Younger generation is just better at hiding it/more exposed. Shit's still the same deep inside.

I'm not chinese enough.
Also, unichan tier 4.

This guy's just out of middle school? Figures, calling someone 8 and justifying racism are the kinds of things teenagers do (and think they're total badasses whilst they do it). Oh dear. OP you should go by the example of the older Asian Americans on TL like Jibba and learn some class. Start with your ridiculous belief that whites should marry whites and blacks should marry blacks. [Oh btw I was a racist dbag when I was your age and I have completely changed (well I have changed the racist part lol) so I do in part sympathise with your misguided views]

LOL, you're making Koreans look like the shittiest people. How do you feel having dishonored your nation so?
|
lol Based on what I know there's two general kinds of drunk korean guys. There's the guys that are chill and awesome to drink with/play drinking games with and then there's the angry drunk koreans who try to start fights with random guys they "think" looked at their girl wrong while spewing racial epithets. Pretty sure we know which kind you're going to be when you grow up.

Either way you're correct in your assessment of which he'll be.

There's actually extremely few angry drunks in Korea proper, which is extremely surprising considering just how many drunks there are on any given day/hour.
The hostility levels are totally different between Western bars and Korean bars.

You probably haven't been around enough drunk koreans. There's a definite percentage of koreans who are just ticking time bombs when they get drunk, and I see this waaaay more with korean guys than guys of other races. Somehow they feel like they have to be super masculine but are super insecure at the same time so when they get drunk a number of them just flip shit. Get a number of chinese people drunk and its just lol. If you get a group of korean guys together and get them drunk at least one of them will start getting loud and angry. At least that's my experience here in the US, could be different in korea.

You're making us look so shitty; a lot of your claims are unfounded, sweeping generalizations and the image you portray is not even close to an accurate representation of the younger Korean generation. Jesus, if you said you were gonna focus on the 1.5 generation, do just that, don't shit on the natives while doing so

" I only get annoyed/pissed off/rage when they try to hit on our women." why?
|
Edit: 2 posts late
Yeah, I feel it's probably a cultural difference between Korea proper and Korean Americans. The Korean-Candians I knew were much more likely to get angry and try to prove something than the Koreans I know.
Also, in Korea it's very common to demand settlement, or "blood", money if someone hits you, so starting fights can be an expensive affair. It's also a semi-common scam to try and egg stupid drunk foreigners (who often don't know about blood money) on to hit you so that you can demand blood money.

This blog is getting too srs dor me. Peace out. Plz no personal insults. My feelings get huet very easily.

I'd argue that this is the same in most Countries, states even. I grew up in Hawaii before I moved to California, there is a very strong hate towards most tourists (unless you're a hot girl) Typically people in Hawaii view all of the people coming on cruise ships as overweight white americans who just consume and throw garbage everywhere. Coming to hawaii at the age of 14 as some skinny white kid with a rich dad I won't lie, it sucked. I got picked on at first, then I got into canoeing Tradional Hawaiian style and I broke that barrier and once you're in, you realize how amazing this place actually is.
To the OP. I'm assuming based on your post that your friends are largely of Korean descent, how would you feel about a white guy dating a Korean girl you know if he actually embraced the culture (spoke Korean, was familiar with the etiquette etc)

Just want to point out that 120k a year family income is nowhere even close to top 1% of US... Your family is upper middle class at best, but i'm hoping this whole thread is a troll.
