I think that this rule is just a general 'we can knock out anyone who we want'. It has no specific provisions or delineations for what is offensive behavior. I don't like Naniwa, frankly I was hoping he would get knocked out of GSL all together.

But I wanted it to be from valid reasons...

GOM, I'm sorry, but you've lost a paying customer. If you want professionalism from your players I think you need to display some more.

I am a bit torn over how I feel about what Naniwa did after some time to think about it, but It's their tournament and they can take action however they please.

If GSL wants to be international they need to stop with forcing that silly Korean honor and political correctness upon foreign players, let Naniwa be Naniwa please and judge him on his games, not his manners.
Letting foreign players in your tournament means some will have different manners than you are used to. You might not like those manners but they shouldn't immediately be called bad manners.

Some people have better social skills and blend in easier in new communities. Jinro, Huk. Some have more problems. Does that make them worse players? No. Can they help it they don't have these social skills? No. Are social skills mandatory for a pro? Maybe a bit, but in the end, we should judge them by their games and not by if they are socially acceptable. We are a nerd community, but expect the gamers not to be nerds?
It really feels like if a foreigner goes to Korea who doesn't have the acceptable social skills they will burn him at the stake.

I don't want the players to be drones, who all share the same values and ethics, I like them to be personalities. Sometimes a fair and blunt comment from Idra "well he's just played a retarded tactict" is so refreshing after seeing 10 korean interviews "I want to thank my fans coach and parents for making this possible"

And calling somone not Pro who left his country and everything behind to be able to compete with and learn from the best, is to me much more BM than Naniwa's behavior, especially when coming from an authority like GOM.
Just because he didn't want to play a showgame after just losing 3 important games and probably being exhausted and very sad.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

I don't get this decision by GOM. This doesn't make any sense to me at all.
This punishment is way too much.
His seed was revoked because he threw the game? Players do that when there is nothing on the line. Usually in a little less obvious way but they do.
So he went with a probe rush, because game didn't matter. Whose fault is that?

1st of all - Blizzard Cup - big conclusion of 2011, the clash of the titans and they go with BO1?...

Secondly - games that don't matter shouldn't be played/broadcasted anyways. They've created a situation in which player shouldn't ever be, and if he happens to be in one, noone should expect EVERY player to be nice, gm and willing to play a pointless BO1 after devastating losses, especially when he already knows he's eliminated. If someone does then he is fooling himself.

Showmatch BO1 with no cash prize? Who's gonna care about sth like this? Players who care about their good image/fans/entertainment. Naniwa claims he's not one of them. Why punish him for that?

Double standard Korean culture.
This is totally bullshit, joke tournament.

You can say its the most prestigious tournament in the world, but when you call a player an amateur prize money hunter you've basically acted worse than what Naniwa did. Fuck this tournament and the haters. Drama ruining esports.

i loled. some players should just worker rush each other and deciding the game that way - just to let GSL know that they are not there to dictade what a player has to do.

The players earn their seeds and what they are going to do should lay by them. In 99.99% we will see interesting games.

I don't get it- some of you really seem to think that a game only should be played "if it mattered".

Take football for example: GASP there are plenty of "friendly" matches between the national teams, that still get televised and pull plenty of viewers. The latest friendly between the Netherlands and Germany was all over the news, "OMFG" I hear you say, "THE GAME DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING, THEY SHOULD JUST THROW THAT BALL OVER THE FENCE AND LEAVE".
Which is exactly what Naniwa did.

The severity of the punishment can be argued, but the need for one can not.
Personally I just think Naniwa is literally incapable of understanding these matters. Maybe some mild asbergers or something- you'd think he'd have gotten the message by now.

edit: Also, "putting on a show" is also part of a professionals job. Seriously, how often have you read the phrase "I want to show good games" in pro gamer interviews?

Sorry to break it to you Mr. Chae, but if naniwa was a "prize money hunting amateur" he wouldn't be in korea.

naniwa needs to take stock, i doubt QxG were best pleased either, seriously.... wtf nani.

I know that you really care alot about the game, so why make yourself look like a child.

"I can't win, so i don't want to play anymore!" *throws toys out of the pram"

Would have been so much better to see some super allin cheese from NaNi if he didn't want to play. But don't just throw the game, so fucking lame.

"there will always be more tournaments" - NaNiWa <-= erm not if you keep pissing everyone off and making progamers look like kids.

your tears amuse me. you know you'll buy a ticket when jinro makes through the qualifier.
In this regard, Jinro is probably the exact opposite of Naniwa. While Jinro's performance is currently not at world class level, he still is a very good example of a pro gamer. His ethics, personality and professionalism represent e-sports. He delivers, even when he does not win.

There are culture differences here. In Korea they demand a lot more respect and see something like not taking a game seriously as a big deal.
Anyway, if Naniwa deserves his Code S spot he will get through the Code A qualifiers, he can just look at it as something to build on and improve

I swear to fucking god Team Liquid has been taken over by 16 year old girls. Since when did being a completely selfish and disrespectful become the cool trend on here?
Since when did (IMO) giving out excessively harsh punishments, ruining months of work and dedication for a player, on the grounds of he not properly entertaining them in their pointless match become ok? Especially considering he is not an entertainer and they are not paying him to be one, he is a competitor, providing entertainment by proxy of competing.

Excessively harsh? He got his seed taken away that he didn't even earn through the traditional route. He disrespected the organizers of GOM. GOM runs GSL. Shocking they wouldn't want him in their tournament next season. Guy gets paid to play Starcraft and he won't even play a televised game vs Nestea in a tournament he agreed to (including prize money?)

So much white knighting on here.

He did play a game. If you're playing a game for a tournament there's an implication there that this game is meaningful to your placement in this tournament.

That game wasn't so he didn't try in it. There's no rule that says "you must try to win at all times" it is up to the scheduling and the tournament format to guarantee that this is the case.

Do you have no idea how many games are played that are meaningless in almost all sports? I guess everyone who starts off 0-2 in MLG should worker rush all their games, I mean if the can't win, why bother?

If a naniwa was down in a series he would have tried, because he could still win.

And in sports teams play their worst players during meaningless games, they still come to play the game, but they don't try, they keep all the best players on the bench.

except in sports multi million dollar careers are at stake everytime they step out on teh field. So why risk injury to your best players when you dont need to. Not to mention playing bad players also gives the bad players much needed experience if they ever want a shot at being a starter.

trying to make a analogy between sports and esports is retarded. Why not just look at the situation at hand. Unless they removed group play completly there will always be pointless matches played. I would like think that players would want to compete and give good games regardless of whether it matters or not. Its not like playing your best at sc2 is going to jepordize your career.

And the mindset of i dont want to play because im too focused on the game i just played. THATS EPORTS. Games have always been played 1 right after the other since the beginning its about time players started getting their mind set right so they can compete at a top level not matter what happened your last game.

This is so absurd - how can a non-viable strategy possible be regarded as offending to the player and/or audience. There are so many ways to throw a game intentionally, just because he chose the obvious one he gets banned from code S? CoCa gave free win in a tournament to his opponent after he won the game and that doesn't start 1/10th the drama.

Funny how idra dosnt get the same crap when he forfeits tournament matches. I remember a game where TB was casting and idra just forfeited the matches like that. Why dosn't he get such crap as well?

And personally I'm getting tired of the korean culture-bullshit as well, as others have said, if they want an international audience then adopt international standards. The whole 'honor' and 'total respect' is really starting to get to me by now..

During a match, a player shall not offend the opponent or audience with abusive behaviours"

if im a player and lets say bomber lands mules during battles and i feel offended, does that mean bomber is banned?

if im a player and lets say MC taunts or gives me a thumbs down and i feel offended, does that mean MC is banned?

what a joke.

His actions sure reflect what the Chae said. Being a pro gamer is much like being a professional athlete. You put in 100% effort at all time even when there is nothing on the line. Amateurs don't have that mindset; therefore, what Mr. Chae is pretty close.
