Right now the only thing SC2 has going for it is that it is fresh and new unit and strategy wise. Everything else is just inferior.
It is well known that many top foreigners dislike SC2. Idra, Nony, Ret, etc. They just play it because the SC2 scene is so big because SC2 is new.
Why is SC2 so popular now? Because of the graphics? It is basically the same gameplay concept. Because it is easier to play? I don't understand why there's all these people blowing up the SC2 scene, throwing money at it and raving about how amazing RTS esports is. We had SC BW for 12 years and people outside Korea largely ignored it. Why? Because of flashy graphics that serve nu purpose?
To be fair not every progamer thinks that way. From a recent interview with Nada:
"Q. What are your thoughts between SC1 and SC2
In SC2, the graphics are very nice and the overall mechanics of the game is easier so it’s easier to play, but because of that, each battle and strategy becomes more important. For example, many units in one control group tends to bunch up so you have to be careful to spread them in battle. As for strategy, there are many that just simply end the game if you are not prepared, so you have to be extremely careful, especially in the beginning of the game. What people say about early game scouting being difficult is true. However, through my vast experience, I have to predict by feel what my opponent’s strategy will be."
"Q. Many people consider TvT a matchup very similar to SC1, what are your thoughts on this?
No, I think it is much harder. With the added units like Banshees and Marauders, it is hard to find the right balance of units. In SCBW, it was a positional game like Go (the black and white board game), involving positional and mental battles, but in SC2 there is the added dimension of unit composition. I think that TvT, especially in SC2 is both dynamic and fun. Haha."

Nada retired before the current TvT metagame change. I thought sc2 is more about positioning since there are no units(other than tanks) that can hold an area and highground advantage is bullshit.
"strategy, there are many that just simply end the game if you are not prepared"
This, shows that game design is flawed somewhere alright. What happened to defender advantage?

Warpgate happened
Warpgate, and close-clump pathfinding, and no high ground miss percentage, and entrenching/slow units generally got nerfed or removed while faster units got buffed.
gonna disregard the content of this thread for now and just answer your question, because I CAN'T STOP! I've tried for years to quit scbw but every time I come back and fall in love with the game again.
Like everyone else I was excited as hell about SCII. But then Blizzard started acting weird. Paying people to advertize illegaly to promote SCII in Korea, constant updates, trying to kill the BW scene, no chatrooms until forever later. I'm sure it's a fun game - I just couldn't care less. Also - GOM really should have FREE HD streams & VODs. You're trying to ESTABLISH a scene - leave it free for a while at least. If I hear about a cool play I might check it out if it's accessible. Also - the BW leagues are way more exciting than the SCII ones. TSL3 was the high point of SCII so far. Really Blizzard / GOM, you can't outshine an online tournament? No wonder they're trying to get good with OGN /MBC and let them host SC2 tournaments.
TLDR: SCII is still like late game TvT in BW. Two armies circle each other. One clash. GG.
Because its awesome and fun to play and watch. It has better graphics than SC2 (yes, in fact 2D is much better for rts than 3D, plus BW graphics are more "mature")
and there are so much more things that are making BW a much better game (the best esport ever) than SC2 atm.
Thats why im gonna wait till all the expansion sets for SC2 are going to be released and see whats going to happen then
First of all as many said its fun and its challenging to play with simple and clean graphics that are easy on the eye. The only game that I've played for over 5 years and never get bored playing it. Watching pros playing BW is entertaing and more fun than playing and at last my PC is kinda crappy so it runs BW with no problems.
And why is SC2 even mentioned in this thread? This is not about SC2 vs BW gtfo trolls.

Did you read the poll? BW vs SC2 was clearly the OP's intent.
Because I'm poor and haven't bought SC2 yet. And even after I do there are some things about SC:BW I really like that SC2 lacks so I might go back and play BW for nostalgia's sake.
On July 04 2011 17:39 ShadeR wrote: In all seriousness a more appropriate question would be "Why play SC2?"
Maybe i should post that in the sc2 forums
Follow it with an appropriate parallel like... Why have sex with a woman when you can masturbate?
Why go to cook a burger when u can put a turd in a bun?
Why break your mouse when you can punch your brother?
Why take a bath when you can walk your dog?
Too good.
Man this thread was good for a few laughs. OP's strategy: Make a thread about BW being a game for lepers -> Announce the cure for leprosy is to stop being a leper and start being healthy -> Profit?..
god damn. the OP is so naive its irritating. I had a large flame post that i omitted largely because i would get banned.
I don't play BW anymore (too little people, im falling behind, school, im using Win7, etc) but, i can argue that it is a much much much better game than SC2 and i would play it if the crowd was larger (yeah theres a large Korean population but hey, im not as good as them :l). I did get SC2, and i do play it from time to time with friends if possible but thats really it. Unlike BW when i got into it, i played it every day (I would be one of those Custom/UMS gamers playing Cat n Mouse all day and Fastest/BGH! in my first year online). There were hackers, and faggots everywhere on battle.net but that didnt stop me from having a ton of fun. Maybe a crucial part of the BW experience was the chat channels. i dont know but i realize i loved the interface.
Really, even I dont know why i love the game so much, but i can tell you why i dont like SC2. Its not the easier mechanics, i think thats fine (cept MBS and tabbing unit spells) but the main problem is how unappealing the game turned out to be (aka Blizzard's management on the game). What happened to all the cool strategies and perks that blizzard offered us back 3 FUCKING YEARS AGO??? Why is it that the only troll unit is the Mothership? Why dont we have a starbase? Where is the advanced interface that battle.net 2.0 promised? Why do the custom maps suck ass? Why are the maps flooded with rocks?
Thats just some of the problems
Also SC2 is boring to watch. sorry. being a BW player, my expectations of a good game are significantly higher

I wish. He was just so naive and brought up SC2 half way through the thread
"From a SCII player's perspective, I don't get it and I would like to understand the reasons why you guys still play BW rather than SCII. "
