Does Day[9] actually play starcraft or does he just commentate and analyze? The reason I'm asking this is because in some of the dailies I saw that on his portrait he has the overlord icon and his name is DayNine. I looked his profile up and it seems like he doesn't play any games. He has something ridiculous like a 80% win rate in 1v1, but he's in platinum (probably cause he hasn't played since beta??)
I'm pretty sure this is his profile.... I remember one daily he talked about zerg openings and he was playing several games on xel naga. He left all the games and when I checked his profile he had several losses in a row on xel naga (customs).
So why doesn't Day[9] play? Or am I just mistaken? I'm pretty sure he talked about how he won some pretty big tournaments in BW. Did he do dailies and stuff back in BW too? Is he just 100% focused on analyzing gameplay now? Thanks
Day9 uses a separate account to do dailies and other non-competitive activities. For laddering and such he uses a private account unknown to the masses.
Day [9] has a smurf account so that he doesn't get spammed all day while laddering. From what I know, he plays random and he plays it pretty well. I don't expect anything less than master league

He has a smurf account which is probably fairly high ranked, but obviously he doesn't have time to play as much as he could. He doesn't really play in tournaments at all anymore since he's busy casting them. I believe he once said on SOTG that he'd be up to playing in a tournament some time as long as he had a long time beforehand to practice.
He's also said that he plays team games a lot just to relax and work on his mechanics.
As was said, he indeed uses another account. The most stalkerish of his fan actually found out his real account by elimination process from things day would say (talking about losing slumps and giving precise numbers etc).
He doesn't play all that much on it either though, but def more than this DayNine account.

I am pretty sure Day9 plays a decent amount, there is no way he could give such an in depth explanation of the game unless he played a lot. I am waiting for Day9 to return to playing professionally and dominating NA for a couple of years, it would be like George Foreman's comeback to boxing in 1987 or something.

Ding ding ding. It's true that he plays way less, too. He was top 200 around the time when being 2000 diamond was tip-top of the ladder.
Keep in mind that Day9 was an A level zerg on ICCup, so he definitely has the mechanics AND the game sense (obvious) to be a competitive masters level player.
he either has A) a smurf (which i'm sure he does, but for people asking this same question about any other notable player, this is probably the main reason why they seem like they haven't played many games). B) he has too many real life obligations C) prefers to commentate than play
or a combination of the three (in day[9]'s case, i'd say only a combination of A and B, cus i think he enjoys casting/playing almost equally).
if you don't know already, he was sort of a pro gamer back in broodwar, playing in wcg/winning and all.

Wtf, there's not a chance in hell he plays anything but protoss. I mean, have you seen his immortal impression? That takes studying, and it's not like he just sorta does the impression, Day[9] is to the Immortal as Frank Caliendo is to John Madden.

There are a few people who know, only those closest to him but anybody who knows it would never leak it out. Why would you do that to him anyways, there are hundreds of people that feel the need to message him for some sense of satisfaction day after day during his daily and to what avail, not like he'll read it. He should have a smurf account and he should never have to publicly have that information released, because the day it does is the day that he'll have to spend another 60 dollars to get another one and grind it right back up.
DayNine could never play a single game of Starcraft II and still know more about Starcraft II than ninety-nine percent of the player base. I'm convinced the dude is a prodigy when it comes to this stuff.
