I disagree with the OP, however. What some people consider "high moral values" are sometimes just stubborn people. Progress must be made, and I believe the best time of america is besides us.

I believe the spoon represents a high moral value(thus lazy ass roomates not having it) needed to achieve greatness for America(eating cereal from bowl.) What this guy is really saying is that Americans nowadays are trying to achieve greatness, but we can never go back to our former glory if we follow the fads of the time. I disagree with the OP, however. What some people consider "high moral values" are sometimes just stubborn people. Progress must be made, and I believe the best time of america is besides us. I disagree with this assessment - I feel more like the spoon is representative of entitlement; the proverbial "silver spoon". By eating his cereal with a fork, OP is essentially encouraging us to make the best of our situations, even when our advantages are taken away by our environment (e.g. the 'lazy ass roommate'). This is your classic American Dream story, but still a good reminder of what we can accomplish if we set our minds to it and persevere despite our shortcomings. Incredibly insightful blog.
