Why does SC2 take more skill than WoW arenas?

So, I recently got into an argument/debate with a friend who plays WoW pvp about which takes more skill, SC2 or WoW arenas. For a fact I know SC2 takes way more skill than WoW arenas. He kept going on and on about having to be on the same page as your partner and there are like 1000 buttons binded on his mouse or something like that. The main point of my argument was that BW and SC2 are the most competitive video games out, 500,000 dollar tournament! He countered with "Just because people are into something doesn't mean it takes skill. If there was a 1,000,000 dollar tournament for tic tac toe, that doesn't make it require skill. I brought up the counterstrike team that switched over to WoW for a week and were able to beat like 99% of the top rated arena teams no problem. He countered with CS takes more skill than SC2 or BW! I brought up apm, but he said that anyone can spam apm and that it wasn't shit, he said that SC2 takes the same amount of skill that as a WoW duel does... I used to play WoW and for a fact this is Bullshit. I can't let this slide, was hoping you guys could help me build an argument for the next time this fucker brings this up on vent.

While SC2 is harder, I WILL say WoW arena at high levels is not what you are imagining it as. Players like Pookz can and will kick any 2600 level player's ass. There are incredibly good players at WoW arenas, and their skills/teamwork are very subtle but I can assure you they are amazing.

SC2 does take more skill though, but don't be so quick to put down wow arenas! In TBC there was amazing players doing amazing things that were awesome.

WoW includes a ton of button mashing since there aren't that many spells to use and is more teamwork intensive
when you get into the arena, you identify the team and you say okay, take out healer and CC other guys
in SC2, you are on your own and creating your own strategy, and you have to adapt to what your opponent is doing

They take two separate skill sets so you can't really compare them. You need to define what you each consider skill and then rate the games on those elements.

This thread is going to get closed me thinks, just asking for a flame war between the sc2 and wow players.

My opinion, (played both at a reasonably high level) they both require skill, however the skill sets they require are COMPLETELY different. To the point where i dont think u can say one way or another which requires more skill.

No point in fighting about it with ur friend. No one will win the argument.
Just play the games and enjoy them.

Apples and Oranges. There's really no point in arguing about it. They take a different skill set. One is completely individual and requires lots of fast actions in succession to be successful. The other requires less specific actions but forces you to communicate well out loud with teammates. Communicating and coordination is probably what elevates WoW to eSports level even though I personally feel the game and balance of it is questionable.

I think WoW is a garbage competitive game, but certain classes really aren't as easy to play well in arena as people like to think. There also is skill involved in it.

Avoid these debates video game/sports debates. Everyone thinks they're right and nobody should care.

He sounds pretty convinced he's right, my advice would be to not give a shit. In the end winning an argument over the internet is pointless; because people don't like to be wrong. You see it all the time, people who are convinced they are right and won't hear it any other way.

as an aside to my earlier post, WoW micro timings are incredibly subtle, it took me so long to learn to throw out useless GCDs (like ice barrier when not being focused, cause it is usually a habit to ice barrier whenever it falls). Playing a mage was NOT easy, and the multitasking was on par for me with SC2. Note that I play SC2 at high diamond protoss as well as WoW at 2600. I really love both games and they are incredibly different.

Again though, SC2 has a higher skillcap and is way more interesting/notbiased

On an individual level, I would say SC2 takes more skill than WoW arena but then again WoW PvP is team based and require it's own skill set. The difference is also that WoW (from the players perspective) get's intense faster then most SC2 matches. But again, two different games. Same as comparing quake live and Counter-Strike/ or DotA to WC3. So conclusion: neither requires more skill than the other.

Meh, I agree with your friend a little bit. Team based games take more talent than a game like SC2 where skill is acquired through basically massing games to master mechanics. Teamwork isn't something you can just 'mass'. It has to be pure talent and chemistry.

SC2 takes more 'skill', but I wouldn't doubt that team-based arenas take more 'talent'. They are different things.

it's best not to argue with these kinds of people trust me from experience they'll just drag you down and make you doubt yourself sc:bw is the most competative and skillful esport ever then like cs1.6 then sc2 probably around that maybe quake up there too but yea i played competative wow for a long time and it does not compare in any means to sc.

You're comparing Apples to Oranges. WoW Arena is about teamwork while Starcraft is about multitasking.

Tell that to Nadagast.

But yeah you can't really compare those two games.

Compile a list of units you have to control in the two, and compare map sizes. You have to keep many more things in your short term memory in SC. Custom UIs help with this too. You don't get a little cooldown clock on your screen for a larva injection.

SC2 is a competitive game without even having to try to be, WoW is only a "competitive" game because Blizzard pushed it themselves.

Also, it's WoW.

WOW has global cooldowns, there are times where you CANT cast a spell, and your just moving around.

sc2 almost never has down time, your always pushing your limits every game. but thats not to bash WOW, the biggest issue with WOW is gear. thats why its harder to directly translate skill between the games.
