Those guys are closing in on 200k viewers each. While Day9 is awesome the OP says "mainstream" and Day9 is awesome but he's not the most mainstream caster. On a side note I <3 day9.

Day9 may be a great caster, but he's far away from the popularity compared to the others. There are many good reasons for this as well, one hour casts with plenty of analysis will be boring for A LOT of players, most of them prefer the casting style of people like Husky and I can't blame them. It's not about the education value, it's about entertainement, because it's easier listening to. I guess this thread will turn into a trollforest, so I wouldn't be too surprised, if it gets closed pretty soon.

Most commentating teams for "real" sports (as in, the stuff you get on your TV) has people like Husky and HD, and they do a lot of the commentating/shouting, but usually they are also accompanied by people in a more analytical position who have a deeper understanding. Husky/HD mainly focus on the general talking over a game and saying mostly stuff kind of related to it part of the job, which is what you also get with TV commentators for sports, but then they lack the complete package by not having the more analytical parts, in my opinion. Someone like Day9 tries to do a bit of both, but then often (as you typically get on TV), commentary is best done in teams where people have different skillsets and different appeal.

I like Day9 a lot better obviously but this is a question of who's more mainstream, not who's better quality.

"Mainstream" doesn't inherently mean "already commanding a large following" but rather "who is the most accessible and valuable to the average person". They're all equally accessible, but Day has the game sense and knowledge to actually educate the viewer while simultaneously giving play-by-play and color commentary.

Day9 is ofcourse also a favorite, I learned most from him and PsY HD and Husky are fun too and I watched them a lot, but recently I find them a bit less educational and sometimes a bit over the top. They also talk too often about stuff not related to the game they are casting and recently have too few casts. I feel like they are busy with all kinds of stuff , tournaments, websites, sponsoring etc, and casting became a bit secundary. Got to respect everything they do for the community, but maybe it's a bit too much, for example I don't really see the need for StarcraftArena.net, yet another sc2 site? AskJoshy and Crota are pretty good too.

Husky is cooky, and I like him. And HD is John Madden, and I like him too. I just think Day9 has more depth, as well as more of a knack for appealing to new people. Day9 predicts what the players will do where Husky and HD just say what's going on. Between all that I find Day9 to be the best mainstream option.

I think some of my favorite commentating was the Chill/Artosis combo during TSL/TSL2 though.

I never listen to HD/Husky if I have a choice. I really like Day[9], Chill and DjWHEAT, and Tasteless. But lately I haven't heard of Tasteless casting anything so I'm kinda bummed =( Chill is the general strategist. He clearly tells you what to do, what to think about, and how to correctly respond to X situation. I really like his style of commentating. He is also very funny when he's got a great partner like Day[9] or Incontrol (as proven in TLA S3) Day[9] is the "tell you everything" commentator. It's very easy to get infected by his passion and excitement when he's commentating. He talks about everything from the map description to the very use of every unit in the given match up. When watching him you'll always learn something, be it some nuance, some trivia or some straight up excellent tip to do or to think about during a game.

Raelcun is the Iron Man of casters. 7 hours for Raelcun is nothing and he has provided probably 1000's of games at this point (I don't care to count lol). He also keeps it professional and is VERY good about not using foul language so you can have your nephew who's 12 tune in and not worry. I can't wait for Tasteless to start casting again ! Will be good times! Day9 is also gangst er like I mentioned before and is probably one of the most mainstream casters as pretty much 112% of his fans would recognize him on the street whereas Husky and HD don't spend as much time on camera so they can blend in a crowd more.

The vast majority of the time what he says he thinks is about to happen doesn't. His only saving grace is he gets some good games. Husky seems to be slightly, only barely though, more knowledgable than HD. The thing is though Husky doesn't try to analyze the game. He literally just casts it. ie This is happening, OMG he just got dropped. Husky finds great games too. Day9 actually practices against these pros and knows most the build orders for each race and match up and he has a good idea of what's cutting edge innovation. He offers in depth coverage that is over the head of the most casual viewer, but amazing for anyone looking to improve their game.

He knows strategy in SCII very well imo. Raelcun is the Iron Man of casters. 7 hours for Raelcun is nothing and he has provided probably 1000's of games at this point (I don't care to count lol). I'm not looking for in-depth commentary, just a caster who makes the games the most exciting to watch for the layperson (think the Hindenburg announcer). I think that sort of caster is very important, as by making a replay cast sound like the announcer on a "real" sport helps give competitive gaming more of an air of legitimacy. I think the three most mainstream is HD>Husky>Day[9}. A lot of why i think this has to do with accessibility. HD and Husky are pretty close in the running but ultimately its HD that has more subscribers (like 4,000 more, not much considering how many they have total but still more). But what makes HD more mainstream is that if you type in "starcraft 2" or "starcraft 2 commentary" his channel shows up. I think Day[9] is "mainstream" as far as people who dive into starcraft a little more deeper. But i dont think that the real casual person really knows about Day[9]. All three casters bring a great energy to playing. I feel that Husky is the probably the most friendly towards the casual. Sort of like your watching the game with a friend. Day[9] is obviously more analytical. HD is somewhere in the middle. Edit: i feel that there are so many great casters out there but i feel that if you have to search hard for them you cant consider them mainstream

The iCCup TV network only has 60k+ subscribers (between all our channels). But I got to admit I misjudged the power of Youtube and we did not jump on the bandwagon until we had to start from behind. They are defiantly "bigger" and more mainstream on Youtube (it's not even close) but we have the live streaming network that is the biggest. So it is what it is. That being said one thing I think HDH does wella nd TL users give them a lot of shit for is keep the game very accessible to the new player. A lot of casters assume you know what 2 base muta/ling means whereas many viewers do not. It's something Tasteless is the master of so that's why I'm excited for his return. He can get so in depth but make it make sense to someone who just clicked a random reddit link and have heard of that "Starcraft game" once or twice. For this to continue to grow we as a community must make this accessible to the new players so they can start enjoying it too.
