I don't think it's a big deal... I mean, it's not like people are going to recognize people by their real name more than by their in-game name.

Real life names are basically just random names, they don't mean anything. It's like your screen-name for RL.

It's funny how willing we are to reveal ourselves in real life but try to stay exceptionally secretive on the internet.

Okay lets pretend your name is Brian Walker. What does that tell me about you? Nothing, really.

If this Real ID madness isn't put down quickly, we will all witness the greatest fall of a gaming industry leader since Atari died with arcades.

I'll take you up on this.
Someone posted your myspace found by a simple search and I took the liberty of saving (and rehosting) the profile pic.

Here it is, since you asked so nicely for a proposal to ruin your day.

On a less-moderated forum, all I would have to do to annoy you is to look for some threads you have posted long replies in, showing that you care to some extent about having your opinion known. I would then reply with only this image. I believe this would be a low-level but decent attempt at partially discrediting anything you posted previously, since now you can be judged not only by your thoughts expressed by text, but by your real life picture and anything people would like to read into it. It would have a good chance of derailing the thread altogether. If banned I could simply re-register and repeat this. It would be simple to follow your nick and real life name to other forums you frequent and start this as well. Even after multiple bannings you will never know when this picture might pop up as the only reply to any opinion you might state online.

Have a nice day.

This was from the closed thread. Thought I'd respond to sikyon here:

There will be no official response because some people (like me) like it.

It's Blizzard's house, why do they have to explain themselves? Clearly the decision has been made.

If they are feeling generous though, they might say "Give it time." or "If you don't like it don't post."

If they do the don't post thing, it will utterly destroy the community that grew up around them.

As it is, this thing is already garnering a huge response from the community railing against this. For such a once-great company that made quality games and cared somewhat about it's fans, this is like taking a few steps back to get in a cab to go the rest of the way.

I mean, if they do say, just don't post, doesn't that sound... wrong to you? They want interaction, otherwise they wouldn't have had forums to begin with. Anonymity is part of gaming. It's part of the immersion factor. You're not just playing a game. You are your alias playing the game. That's what Blizzard lost sight of.
Take it easy. And if it is easy, it must be cheese

Why do you think people that share your opinion are the majority? I'd love to know where you got your numbers for both sides of the argument from, preferably not just your ass.

Their 'fall' of losing a % of their player base? (If that) I don't think so.

Congrats you found a picture of me from 2004. Good work.

Now that that picture of me from forever ago is out I will go and cry in a corner.

this is a horrible idea .... there is a reason why the internet is anonymous, or should i say the great thing about it is that.

I believe blizzard is taking a tactic of building up the game starcraft 2 by purposely introducing a controversial change last minute that will be revoked come the time of release.

else some blizz employees are seriously lacking in knowing their customers.

If you have a really common name such as Chris Smith then you will be fine but people with more unique names can be tracked down so easily through something such as facebook. It doesn't bother me personally but a lot of people really hate this and i can see why.

Okay lets pretend your name is Brian Walker. What does that tell me about you? Nothing, really.

There are 2,120 people in the U.S. named Brian Walker.
There are 123 people in the U.S. named [my name]
There are 1 or fewer people in the U.S. named [my friends name, she plays WoW and uses the forums]

Extrapolate.

From a simple white pages search, I got the phone number and addresses of a bunch of different Brian Walkers, along with whoever they are related to.

If, for example, your name was unique(trust me, this isn't all that uncommon) there would be exactly one result on that search and that would tell me where to find said person, what his phone number was and where his family lives.

Thinking about it for a few minutes the only issue I can see is that women will get harassed by all the pubescent male idiots.

Depending on how women in general react to that kind of idiocy I would suggest this problem alone might be enough to sink the idea - especially if the games industry is serious on not looking like a sausage party.

I don't want an employer finding my Battle.net forum posts when they google my name.

That can lead to me not getting a job.

How is that exactly? Unless of course you want to act like a total dick on the forums and generally bring your character into disrepute. See what I said about people not wanting to stand by what they say on the forums - you don't think this is what Blizzard wants to stop?

Many people look down on video game players. Especially, MMORPG players. These people tend to be the older folks... who also tend to be the guys in charge of hiring people. So even if your respectful on the forums when they're deciding between you and another guy with the same credentials and you're one of those people he's convinced spends all his time on a worthless MMO that only losers play guess who gets the job?

Nope you ahve it wrong. Older people look down on drop out video game players. You will have no such trouble if your are going for your first job with a masters in hand.

Oh and it won't really be the game bit that puts you at a disadvantage - it will be the drop out bit.

But hey, I am bordering on trolling here - suffice it to say that your name being on display on an internet forum is *NOT* a big deal. Certainly not worthy of this much energy.

This said I do think that Blizzard will climb down from this position and make the forum anon again.
