Hi everyone,

I used to play SC/Brood War very regularly for many years, though really not for the past six or so. I recently started playing in the SC2 beta, and have found it a great game, though clearly not too polished yet - but hopefully the polish will come with time.

However, after twelve years of competitive Brood War play, I think it would be a big shame if the community picked up and moved on to SC2. Too many things would be lost - the accumulated strategies and tactics, not to mention a decade of balance changes.

With that in mind, I was wondering what you all thought about incorporating /both/ games into competitive play. A tournament match could look as follows:
Round 1: SC2, random map
Round 2: loser chooses game (SC2 or BW) or map, winner chooses the other
...and so on.

Here are the merits of this idea:
1. Keeps BW alive, along with the accumulated wisdom
2. Provides an incentive for expert BW players to try SC2 - those players will still be able to learn somewhat on their BW skills
3. Encourages strategic thinking over memorized build orders - it's much more difficult to memorize a set of build orders for two games than for one, but general strategy carries over quite well - frequent scouting, countering, macro, etc
4. Variety - this would not unlike a triathlon where not one but several sets of skills are on display

And the cons, as I see them:
1. Greatly increases the barrier to entry for newcomers - they now have to learn two games instead of one, including a game from the 90s
2. It can be frustrating to switch back and forth due to different hotkeys/mechanics - this could perhaps be remedied by remaping hotkeys?
3. ???

What do you all think? Worthwhile or just a crazy thought?

As a somewhat related side note, I logged into TL for the first time in years and found this 7 year old post of mine: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=5992#8
Still reads true today, I think, and all the more reason to not let SC1/BW fade away as SC2 becomes more and more popular..

that is a little crazy
also newcomers to BW would have no chance not even a little to just jump into BW and play it competitively
so it would be for a very small group of ppl that are willing to play both + have the BW skill set

That's like having a Halo/CoD tournament, or Football/soccer, or Hockey/golf. I mean, it really is! rofl

I think it'd be fun to do on occasion for a special events or something (I know I'd enjoy it). But for mainstream gaming I don't think it's very feasible to do it as a regular thing.

They really are not that different. Maybe if SC2 was a FPS you could say that but there both rts's and alot of skills crossover between the games.

It has to happen eventually and it's been a very long time. I understand why people have stuck to SC all these years; because it's that great of a game. But doesn't the phrase "move on" mean anything to you? I could understand people clinging to SC if this new game was Warcraft IV but it's not. It's a sequel to your beloved game which is in so many ways the same. It seems like nostalgia or something else illogical at this point. And if you really need BW still then you can observe the Korean pro scene which is as strong as ever.

Agreed. It would be hard to get a tournament of this type up and running. I remember that Starcraft + Special Force tournament that Korea had and I thought it was ridiculous.

This is exactly what smash brothers melee/brawl do now and its a great idea. Fighting games are known for not leaving the prequels even after a sequel comes out. While games like halo basically abandon the prequel which saddens me very much

Anyway, I approve!

This would be very inconvenient to the players, but nice creativity.
It'll be fun to do with friends but as a tournament it just doesn't sound viable.

At a QuakeCon a few years ago they had a thing they called the "Quad Damage" tournament, where top Quake pro's had to compete for a prize by playing Quake 1, 2, 3, and 4.

As it turned out, players were only able to master two of the 4 games. This was really a buzzkill to the tournament, because the distinction was so clear between who played what game. The finals were incredibly 1-sided on all 4 games (one player winning Quake 1 and 2, the other winning Quake 3 and 4) and came down to an ace match where a random game was selected.

Props for the idea, but I think it would hurt both games more than help either of them.

Chessboxing seems sweet. So, i propose that we hold a Joustcraft tourny. slap a laptop on a horse and repeatedly joust your opponent while simultaneously trying to defeat him in a game of Starcraft 2.Starcraft 2 is optimal because to be able to control a horse and maintain such a high apm that BW would require would be simply unthinkable. I think it would be pretty interesting.

This is why I think it wouldn't work that well, because it's hard to match people who are close in skill in both games at the same time, and if they aren't the games just aren't entertaining or good.

Also I never understood chessboxing, couldn't Mike Tyson just learn how to stall for a little bit in chess and then knock out like 95% of the sport's players in the first round of boxing?
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion man

Well if you like seeing SCBW cheese then yeah probably a good idea. Maybe if instead of looser chooses the game its just alternating.
