Oversky rapes this noob EZ. I came in halfway through, but Haedori went for some lame attack that failed, and was left with no Zealots, and his cannons kept getting destroyed at his base before the finish.

No, this is an individuals tournament. The ACE team is just playing today for scheduling reasons. Boxer will play in the fourth Bo3 of the night.
hahaha are they seriously playing "i kissed a girl" for this? I was just listening to that like 10 minutes ago. Anyway, NO WAY do they know what that song is about or they wouldn't play it lol.

It's even worse than him being a base behind- he's actually less than half the base count I think... Daezang should be at nat only, while you can see that snow has a heck of a lot more

Don't think so, although it might have been closer- it's tough to come back when you're that far behind (1 base has been pointed out) and when you melt your army.

Wonder why daezang choose to expand there...?
He was like 20-30 psi behind in that last battle. That army would have put him where he needed to be to have a shot at getting back into the game.
Ulitmately, I think two things lost him the game a) his willingness to forgo reavers - this game is a great example of how a few units and reavers and shuttles can hold off a much larger army and b) that choice of expansion location. It was very close to where Snow would have been maneuvering his army so Daezang lost it with just a few moments of army misplacement.

Tough- that reaver micro was the best i've seen recently, although at this point, i'm just going to call it lucky.
And i still have no idea why he expanded there. Anyone else?
looks like daezang might have a shot to win this one ez

And scourge instead of muta? very safe, but i kinda sorta wish he would play to win instead of playing 15+ min games ><;;
wow that was a lot of scourge lost- too bad that's a lot of hydra. I think that violet is going to have toruble . The scourge finally make it in. About 12 sairs lost, possibly all of them, but 4 reavers are taking out teh hive. HIVE TECH!!! is dead. hella kills . I think that even with 15 sairs and 4 reavers and 2 shuttles lost, violet made it out ahead by killing the hive tech.
So rough that every break results in Tasteless and/or lilsusie's thoughts getting cut off mid sentence. Oh well, we'll be seeing boxer in just a few minutes. ^_^
that was some of the worst micro that i've seen from boxer ><;; lt's hope that his macro is up to speed. Spire has already start for zerg, which is at 11, and boxer is at 1
calm down guys....boxer is something like "imma lose game 1 to make this noob feel superior and own him bad in games 2 and 3 and make him regret playing SC.!"

I am still so excited. Those games were great. Man I hope Boxer gets in top form after he leaves the air force. Show the new players how to really play this game.

I completely and utterly agree. That game was more fun to watch than july vs best and july vs best was the best game I'd watched all year.
Yeah, I feel like no game this year will surpass tonight. Unless he somehow takes down Jaedong in the GSL finals, but that's less likely than Boxer playing standard.

Watching Boxers games today makes me totally happy AND sad at the same time. It really makes me aware of what strategic depths we (or Starcraft) have lost during the last couple of years due to the fully mapped out game mechanics heavy standard builds which are so common nowadays.
I mean these games were just sooo entertaining to watch, because you just didn't know what Boxer was going to do and if he could pull it off. Especially in the first game I just sat there gaping that he really managed to win the game.
And it really reminded me that this kind of feelings were just common 4-6 years ago and I had these feelings quite often (not only from Boxer VODs). Nowadays, I sometimes are amazed by great micro feats like Jaedong's defilers, but I am not totally blown away. As many builds nowadays are so similar or differ only in minor points and are played that often, one can usually really early predict the outcome of a game (if there are no major micro/macro errors). It then mainly depends on mechanic execution as the strategic plan is more or less mapped out beforehand.
I know that Boxer could most probably only win these games due to the inexperience of his opponent who just lost his head instead of staying calm and playing it defensively, but nevertheless it was great. But: if one of the mechanic kings like Jaedong, Flash or whoever would play a little more like Boxer, they could probably move their play into the next level. And this is what I hope for. Regarding game mechanics we are getting pretty much close to the end of the flagstaff, so it is time to move on a combination of mind-boggling mechanics and creative, highly intelligent strategies. So, Plexa, I hope you are right with your "To Bolt is to Boxer" article in the "final edits" section!!!!

Oh man, I know I'm going to get flamed, but was I the only one cringing during game 1 and most of game 2? Not sure if it was worth staying up for.
I'm glad boxer won, and it was exciting to see the nuke/valks, but nothing in his play shows me he's going to go far in this tournament. He was just lucky this zerg player was a scrub. The games were sloppy.
Hopefully Boxer starts taking the tournament seriously.

It's sad when people confuse innovation and creativity with luck and chance.
Some parts were sloppy (like his first marine push in game 1)... but it was worth staying up for, because of the innovation(unpredictableness?)/excitement - what else is there to starcraft besides the excitement?

But you see, the sloppiness helps make the game more exciting. A smooth game doesn't have that certain spicy flavour. At first you think that Boxer is incredibly sloppy in failing his attacks. Then you sit on the edge of your seat as Boxer holds back the oncoming mutas and goes for daring drops. Then you finally climax as Boxer shreds their lurkers with godlike micro and nukes their expos in what is seemingly an amazing comeback.

I'll be brave and (sort of) agree with you here. As I was watching the game, I was thinking "This looks like B.net attack or something." I think Boxer played pretty well given that he's gone almost 2 years now without regular training. Of course I'll always be cheering for Boxer, but I don't have incredible confidence in his ability to take on a great player, at least until he can shake off the rust.
That said, I'd say progamers play more predictably now than ever, and Boxer is pretty much gonna mindfuck everyone once his mechanics get up to par with his tactics. But I'm really not expecting much until he gets back into SKT.
edit: oh, but it was definitely worth staying up for. I'd agree with a past poster that the best games of the year so far have been July vs Best (partially because July is my favorite player, and I play Z myself), and these games rivaled those in excitement.

This game was DEF worth staying up for. Soo god damn good, anyway im used to staying for GOM at normal times
Just fyi Boxer was 3-10 in his last 13 TvZ games before this. The game just before this 13 game span was his famous win over Savior on Monty Hall with mech which was at the end of an epic TvZ win streak.

Yea, I totally agree with you, Boxer wouldn't want to embarrass someone, even those nukes way back are meant for entertainment (except the one against Elky during WCG, that was for revenge). BoxeR is just playing his style.
both games were pretty fun, I just can get too hyped about it, cause this Baxter kid was a noob, or maybe he is not, but played with too much fear and respect. The Emperor got that pretty early so used such a weird strats to entertain which is always good- Flash I guess would went for a sunk break if he was playing those games but anyway, I'm glad those games happened. Its easy to hail the Emperor for such a display of style an etc. , cause everything he does, even the smallest thing is taken as a flare of pure talent and awesomeness, which I think is a bit too much. Those two games will be discussed for a half a year I guess, and thats make me a bit sad, cause a kickass pimp-play material from an unknown players like juni (remember his game on Andromeda vs Flash? I bet not) will went to an oblivion.
Hehe, those boxer games were awesome. You can really tell that he is a bit rusty, but still. . . wow. Too bad the VOD quality really sucks.

posting a vod of a game were the zerg loses 6! drones to a proxy rax bunker rush and comparing it to boxers games today just shows that u know nothing about starcraft. U have to be a D+ player max to honestly think these games are comparable. End of discussion.
Niceeeeeeee, who cares if Boxer doesnt win vs a "competent" player, it's just like watching the old and good days of starcrat :D. And for that i just <3 Boxer.
am i the only one who doesnt think those were the "good days of starcraft" but rather the beginning? I mean who prefers watching soccer or basketball matches from 50 years ago compared to now? Nowadays strategies and skill difference just evolved to a point where its gotten incredibly hard (if not impossible) to pull all kinds of crazy stuff regularly. Still there is change in gameplay and strategy, only its much more subtle to note than "valks and nukes" or "queens + devourers". Nowadays the map plays a huge factor in bringing out interesting strategies, remember when Flash killed shit in tvz on katrina with mech and fast +1? It sure doesnt look as genius as the crazy stuff people could pull in the old days, but that doesnt mean it just isn't. In fact, coming up with something new that works on the current level of skill SC has evolved to is far more impressive imho.
and before i get flamed: i started playing sc competitevely before TL ever existed and watched these "old times" first hand and sure, finals like Grrr vs TheBoy made me jizz my pants back then. When I go watch them now I can't look past their (relatively) abysmal control and multitasking. Now I jizz my pants when I see the perfect macro/micro/multitasking of players like Jaedong or Flash.

It is comperable.
care to elaborate? cus you know, if u pull 9 drones and lose 6 of them in the first 3 minutes of the game as a Z it is already GG. Im pretty sure every C Level T would have won from there on (if they wouldnt know its jaedong and get nervous like shit cus they have a huge chance to win vs jaedong).

Many people do. The pace in football(soccer for US and Australians) was much slower. You had all the time in the world compared to now to do some 'brilliant things'.
And I hear tons of people complain that football nowadays is boring. It's too tactica, it's too much about power play, the stakes are too high to take any risk, etc.
Obviously, you aren't the only one. I think it's kind of silly to claim that low level play is better than high level play. If the game gets too boring you need to change the rules. And in the case of football, it really has major major rules problems anyway.
And it's like Daniel Lee says, most people don't get to appriciate the high level of play since they are unaware like it.
It's not that Starcraft has the same crisis chess has. It's more limited than chess, for sure. But it doesn't have the problem that high level play removes creativity and turns everything into preprogrammed robot play.

Yeah I couldn't agree more with this. Maybe its just that I didnt realize how many of those people post on TL.net nowadays cus back then when it started the vast majority of posters had a relatively good understanding of the game and were able to appreciate most of the nuances of pro level play.

On October 02 2008 21:00 Fwmeh wrote: How can I like boxer when his fanboys are like this? It just get harder and harder....
Its not mere fanboyism. Its respect for one of the best and most important players of all time... sure his mechanics aren't S class at the moment (and probably not even A either, from the looks of his games vs killer)... but put yourself in his shoes for a moment. He has to deal with the expectations of thousands of fans that he will not only win, but win in style, and even maybe win in a new style - all the while not getting a chance to really practice. If you could deal with that pressure and still find ways to win while doing things as bold as make valks (which we all know suck), I would be your fanboy too.
and BoxeR because it's Him; I like Luxury and Flash and Jaedong sorta.
hm... and there are other people I like [iloveoov, NaDa; i'll support oldschool over newschool] but yeah. Since half those people retired, and the active ones are either in the Air Force or joining the Air Force, it's a pretty easy choice.
I'll still cheer for KTF vs anyone but ACE, but ACE is sufficiently badass to merit my support.
Am i the only one who thought that most of those old games SUCKED?! The original Boxer vs Yellow finals in the OSL were BORING. They play was just poor and the maps sucked. I'm sorry everyone but i enjoy the players of today MUCH more than the older players.

Probably something like "GG, I've wasted your time by pretending to be a good player, I never deserved to play against you and I will kill myself as soon as I get off the stage, by killing myself I'm hoping that you will forgive me."

Thats the typical view of nooby player whom has just learnt the moves and thinks the whole games is "who blunders first". Same as thinking SC is all about "whom is the fastest". Please shut up if you haven't got a slightest idea what you're talking about.
--------------------------- I enjoyed the games. I was like WTF boxer is doing, he's going to lose BAAADLY in the first game, when mutalisks killed like 15 SCVS. He won, somehow. I'll just blame baxter, must have been really nervous .

Oh boy, the chess part is such a bullshit I can't even believe it. Chess? Robot play? Non creative? Seriously, how ignorant you have to be to talk such rubbish?.. I think what BlackStar wanted to say is that StarCraft is all about execution. Pimpest Play is a good way to back this up, the quality of the pimpest play has decreased as StarCraft was all about execution of moves while adapting to the build of your opponent.
I've also played Chess and I feel the same, I remember my Seniors during high school in Chess varsity, they play standard openings, like there are pre-made moves to be done. Chess has been explored already and it just boils down to who made the better opening and who has the better midgame.
I feel like bashing a wall with my head. Obviously openings are vital - but unless you're top 100, the value of opening is pretty damn low unless you spend thousands upon thousands of hours studying opening theory - and that time would be much better spent analysing. Most casual tournament players (1800-2000 ELO) just know some general plans and guidelines, maybe 10 moves of the mainline which no one follows anyways except top players . Midgame comment... what can you say to that. You're basically saying who's playing better will win.
Again, this is typical comment from someone who has just barely touched the basics of chess. And thats quite sad too, because to appreciate the beauty and complexity of chess you must be very, very good. Thats why chess isn't and never was a good spectator sport, which is a damn shame .
Sorry for hijacking this thread, im not going to post any more chess-y comments here. If you want to discuss about chess PM me or hit me up on MSN (lemon@freemail.lt)

Also Midas made Valkyries work much better and against decent players atleast (Albeit on a mech favored map)
EDIT: BTW that zerg player Boxer faced was downright Noob and i would expect basically ANYONE to beat him.
You dont get it. We arent all excited becasue Boxer played the best game of his life, or that he had incredible unit control, or took down a really good progamer or anything like that. What was exciting about those games was the creative strategy that he used. I dont know how you can be a fan of progaming and not have found those two games to be the most exciting gmaes of the year.

Yea, it wasn't susie's fault for those questions....she was just asked to ask them, and I bet the guy who wrote those question doesn't have the slightest idea who boxer is.

This is so true, I remember my friend commenting once "why did you do that move?" and see the results a few moves later. Anyway, its a lot same with StarCraft, I remember watching a game once and my friend said "Oh my God! They got tanks already! If I was there I could have just been massing infantry." Those comments are forgivable since they don't know StarCraft as much as most of us would do.
This conversation about beauty of StarCraft and other stuff can be way long, but I think we would all agree that one will understand StarCraft when that person knows a lot about that sport.
Oh damn, I lost faith in Mummyung, cuz his last match was against rA and he got killed bad, and I think rA used to teach Violet or some other Protoss in KTF so I thought that person would have picked up stuff before rA became a commentator....oh well.

u are overdoing it a bit. it sure was epic to watch these games but bear in mind why the progaming scene has become what it is. HE sure wont be able to pull that stuff on a competent player, let alone one of the current top 20.
Maybe, but it was brilliant stratgy nevertheless. It's only the Ro128, so since he can get away with random crazy builds it makes sense that he should. It achieves two things - first, it confuses the hell out of anyone who has to play him in future rounds and, second, it allows him to not give away any other strategies he may be working on. The next matchup will be chaos - who would know what to expect after that? Mind games...
The games with Boxer and his 1 base builds reminding me so much of the games back then. It was nice to see but its very apparent he doesn't have the control and mechanics like he used to! But I am sure he will get back up to par when he plays again and the questions that were asked were sooo... Bad. Lol most of those things I had already known if you are a true boxer fan you would have already known them. Especially the questions about why he picked Terran and why he choose his ID. Nonetheless games were fun to watch and Baxter got dominated.

Probably something like "GG, I've wasted your time by pretending to be a good player, I never deserved to play against you and I will kill myself as soon as I get off the stage, by killing myself I'm hoping that you will forgive me."
Wow! It's amazing what they can express with 3 little characters!
