I wasn't "rambling", I was replying, and the last sentence should have made it clear that I was making no value judgements on anyone, simply talking in generalizations to illustrate a particular point. I believe Koreans are at the top because they have a great mixture of talent AND practice.

hmm, I don't frequent the scgamers forums, I have too many forums to post at as it is. I didn't know there was a backlash against him (fisheye). But if I did, I would have cussed them all out! =p

This isn't the thread for this type of discussion, so I will keep it short. There are people who have played five or even ten times the ammount of games of some progamers, but their repetition and practice will never bridge the gap that a progamer's talent has made. All great players must practice to be great, but it is their talent that allows them to rise above the rest, not simply the hours they devote. Under the right circumstances, anyone can have willpower and determination, and that's why they are not unique talents. Would your coach rather have someone who is determined or someone who is determined AND talented? The two may co-exist, but they are not the same thing at all.

I'm not talking about a daily comparison to a progamer's schedule, but you have to consider there have been people playing the game consistantly since it came out, who have played thousands upon thousands of games, and they still couldn't hold a candle to even a new, up and coming progamer.

This post is very deep and reveals the closest thing to the truth. He feels he can beat Xellos, but it's impossible because Xellos is used to big tourneys like these where there is tons of pressure. And like Manifesto says Xellos seems more calm playing in these big games then in an interview. The difference is the tourney experience.

Well, play the computer 30000 games, then well talk.

no your post is just... wrong i don't know anyone who has competitively played bw that much doubt you do either
it's not like most progamers just started playing bw when they become pros

So what you're saying is, the only people in the world who've played more games than some of the newer progamers, are the older progamers? What about [[RaCe]]ZZang?

Of course practice alone doesn't make up for a lack every other talent, I never said it did. What I am saying is that the ability to practice and focus is a talent just like any other. If you think that given the right circumstances, anyone can devote themselves to something, I think you are just wrong. Either you happen to be one of the very very few people who can and take it for granted, assuming everyone can do it, or you have never actually tried and put yourself to that kind of test.
When I played football and wrestled provincially, I was always one of the hardest working and most dedicated members on my respected teams. I was not very talented or physically gifted compared to many of the born athletes on my teams, but I held my own through the sheer force of will. Yet, I do not even compare to the amount of willpower and dedication and focus that Korean pro's have. I was willing to go the extra mile during practices, and give my 100% effort until I was puking on the fields, play hurt and never give up and all that jazz, but I only had to do that for a few hours every second day or so. When it comes to playing SC, I cannot force myself to put in the extra effort, even when I had damn good reasons and circumstances to do it in. Compared to the average joe on the street, I have way more heart and determination, but compared to the best of the best in SC, I'm sub par. I have practiced hard to place in tournies or join certain teams or represent my country or clan to the best of my ability in a number of competitions, but I can only maintain it for a week at the very most before I get completely turned off of SC. Even when there was money on the line, I was never able to force myself to practice for more than a few games every day for any period of time. I don't look at myself and say "wow, I must have a shitload of natural talent at this game because I can beat or compete with people who probably play way more than me." I look at myself and say "goddamn, I am never going to get anywhere with SC until I can get my shit together and start playing for real. I was at my computer for 10 straight hours tonight, but I only played 3 games of SC. What the fuck is wrong with me!!"

i dont know who [[race]]zzang is and no thats not what im saying im saying that in order to have played 5x more games than yellow, boxer, etc you would have had to play 24 hours a day since starcraft beta
i think you underestimate how much alot of these ppl have played
until 7 months ago i had played consistently since starcraft came out(though not competitively until about 1 year after bw was released) i couldnt hold a candle to progamers but its only because A.)they still practiced more than me and B.)they had better training
|
Weird that every time i argue with someone(live) it ends up as the "is there talant" question.I can only say 1 thing. The world is made out of willpower.
|
yah, the quality of the training matters way more than the sheer time put in, but assuming that all progamers get top quality training, the amount of time and focus put in starts to matter more

I suppose in the end it comes down to where your belief lies in the spirit of the word talent. This discussion lacks any cogency at this point, so there's really no point in continuing it.
