Androide has the best chance of the upset. The guy's been on fire this whole tournament. Showing up 5 days in advance and practicing like made 24/7 straight can do that I suppose.

I'd like to know what the Korean websites are saying. I'm sure they're all giggling about raping the foreigner noobs.

Just talked to Beast a bit on mirc... he said he is playing with an intelly 3.0 I gave him, it even has Breeze written on the bottom of it haha

He said he doubts he can play at 100% vs Xellos because he is too excited after his last victory and he's on 3 redbulls. I lied out of my ass that I think he has done enough and it doesn't matter what he does next . I think if he calms down and doesn't care he has a better chance than a lot of people think.

He doesn't have a chance in hell vs Xellos. In fact, the only guy that can possibly topple Xellos now is Midas.
I'm never gonna know you now \ But I'm gonna love you anyhow.

I checked out a Korean SC gaming site.

They're not showing too much in the way of respect to Beast right now.

But lots of enthusiastic energy for the midas v androide match.

I'm really proud (if I can be) of Beast. He did really well this tournament!

Androide really is looking in prime shape and I think it's possible he could really turn up the upset. I'm just hoping for some games. I bet you a bunch of players will get offers to go to korea ;D.

Last year toss won with cheese. There hasn't been much, if any, successful cheesing this year, because all the good players are just too familiar with the maps by now for it to work. Last year, people didn't really the know the maps too well. The only people who I could see had really studied the maps were Grrrrr and Fisheye, because they had a set plan for every situation, which they executed to perfection every time. That's how they rode it to the top.

BTW, Grrrrr elected to use Terran vs Hellghost on Gorky Island last year. I'm sure he did that because he thought it was a perfectly balanced map that toss would be able to compete on with no difficulties, right?

look it up, I've said the maps were ass since day 1. I didn't complain about Grrrr's and Fisheye's cheese strats, because those maps are begging to be cheesed, but I've always hated the maps.

wow, those spots kinda favour Beast, he can siege into Xellos' min only natural really easily. Too bad that doesn't matter much because only Gas matters in tvt.

Haha omg he commented on our comments (or some people like us =p)

yah WackStevens has made a lot of progress. I remember last year he was scratching his head when terrans scouted with rax, but now it's a matter of course. Give him a bit more experience, maybe an expert commentator, and he'll be great.

yah WackStevens has made a lot of progress. I remember last year he was scratching his head when terrans scouted with rax, but now it's a matter of course. Give him a bit more experience, maybe an expert commentator, and he'll be great.

I agree. He's no expert by any means, but he does a good job conveying what's going on - which is the essence of what he needs to be doing anyway. He also has a lot of passion.

And he needs help in terms of getting another color commentator in there. Doing it all alone is extremely gruelling.

what about iloveoov

tvt is a little random too, I'd think Xellos, Nada, and iloveoov are too close to call. Give Ddang a little more big league experience and he might join that club too.

Dude, that's on these maps. I think most people are talking overall. I know I mean overall play, not just on these maps. Not to mention that they're all very good players, VERY capable of beating each other at any time.

Heh, it would have been super cool to see Boxer reclaim his title.

Nono, Xellos won ONE

1-11 I think

No Xellos had already beaten Nada 2-0 in the MSL a few weeks before. So going into the prelims it was 11-2 in favor of Nada.

Beast lost one of his expos, possibly his only. I think Xellos is up in expos.

I really gotta hand it to Beast, I didn't think he'd do half as good as he has.

After seeing the finals tomorrow, he will DEFINITELY start playing BW. There's no way you can watch those two guys, and NOT want to play afterward.

Finals should be some of the best we've seen. Minus the Boxer v Yellow, and Boxer v Elky (which were awesome).

tvt is all about the matchup.

I tend to think oov > nada > xellos

then Sync who is known for his tvz owns oov all the time (5-1 vs oov, i think)

I'm happy that Beast is in top 4, but as a whole this year was kinda bad for BW, seems like practice is all that matters now, talent is secondary... koreans lost just one game (foru vs testie)

I like this commentator. His enthusiasm and humor are both great. I don't sympathise with anyone complaining about his abilities to comment on the games. I Looked at some of the things written in the #teamliquid channel on irc and I swear it was a god damned kindergarten over there. There was so much petty whining and complaining going on over there I swear had I the power to ban people 90% of those who typed in the main window would be gone. If I had a penny for every sentence of spam the teenagers overthere were writing chances are I'd be a rich man now.

Not to take anything away from Beast but he did get some relatively easy brackets... he's a great gamer but I wouldn't consider him top 4 at all.

I probably sound like a dick saying that but it's not supposed to come out that way.

Koreans are getting better and better with their competitions, and offline tournaments, a lot of lack of practice from the non-korean gamers :/

The problem is, korean are paid and not the non-korean, so kinda hard to practice 10 hours/day only for WCG.

I agree. He's no expert by any means, but he does a good job conveying what's going on - which is the essence of what he needs to be doing anyway. He also has a lot of passion.

And he needs help in terms of getting another color commentator in there. Doing it all alone is extremely gruelling.

No. He means Koreans = non-Koreans when it comes to pure talent. But, Koreans practice a lot more - which is probably true, given the pro gaming system they have in place.

The discussion (either way) is useless. Who cares who has more "talent" (however that may be defined) anyway? It's the results that count.

The top Koreans get tournament games like every week, and the non-koreans have one two day tourney after a whole year of expectations. It's very hard to not snap mentally in such a situation when you are so close to the final, and that's what makes Fisheye's performance from last year and other performances like Slayer winning kbk pretty amazing... I realise that even stronger now just from what I felt when Beast was playing, and I can only imagine what was going on in his and Androide's minds. For Xellos and Midas those are just games like the ones they had last week and the ones they'll have next week. Just because they live in a land where what they do is respected even more than it deserves.

unfortunately without loosing brackets we can't see how non-koreans can perform compared to other non-koreans, thats sad. The good point is, Foru would probably have finished 3rd

We never had a #1, #2 and #3 korean. Hope it will never happen :D

chin up mate! I was damn happy with Grrrr's performance last year, you should be happy for Beast and proud of what he's accomplished, not saying shit like progamers don't deserve the respect they get in Korea and complaining that foreigners have it tough because of our culture.

But the maps are definately shitty =p=p=p

btw Brood, lets see you devote 10 hours of your day to a single goal, subverting every other desire you may have to the solitary need to be the very best in the world at what you do, and then maintain that edge, not for weeks or months, but for years. I tried to be that dedicated to bw, and let me tell you, after about 3 days of 15 games a day, I have to take a week off because it's just too mentally draining. If you think that the ability to be that dedicated to something isn't a special and unique ability (aka talent), there's something wrong with you.

To give all some insight of why I lost so fast..
First game I went for 2 fac with armory and from what i scouted i thought he was doing some tank rush.I stopped my scvs once and i had to put 1 more scv so this allowed him to get his tank faster than mine and get it too close to my base.I went 1 fac tanks 1 fac gols ,but i also forgot a supply and this slowed me down a bit too.My plan was to prolly go a 2nd base after I siege 1 tank and move the rax there. But wtf,i thought i returned my rax but suddenly 2 gols come out of his facs and start shooting at the already half hp rax.So i lost my rax ,he had his and I knew my tanks were 8 range vs 12 range and i should change plan asap.I put 2 fac vulcs and was desprerately trying to prevent him from siegeing my tanks without vision on my side sacrificing scvs and moving my army. But my vulcs arrived too late and I had already lost like 2 tanks more and it was gg.

2nd game it was sooo simple.Ive timed my 2 fac gols to get 2 gols at my expo exactly at the time when the vultures get their mines.Well, i put a tank first ,expecting the same way of playing and canceled it like 10 secs later. My gols arrived like 10 secs later than his vulcs(or so i think, i havent seen the replay but thats what i saw with my rax) and I just gave up.I thought he would contain me and went for the port and side expo to try to stop his .But he didnt send even 1 tank to my base, he just defended and I already knew i had lost but continued playing just for the show.Timing is everything.

I thought i wasnt nervous, but losing an scv in my base without even noticing is plain pathetic.
I think i would have done much better in a longer game and mb in gorky or martian where he couldnt beat me with timing.I have a pretty strong game on Kohral usually ,too.See the games vs Artosis and Rif)Ex(who should be at Andro level prolly) and then laugh at me if you feel like.

And yes ,im very lucky this year with the bracket. From the 3 years I feel i was in worse condition this one, and i still got so far.But I had such bad luck 2002 and 2003, that I guess youll forgive me.

Yeah btw I meant what mensrea said about the talent. Koreans vs non Koreans 20 something wins to 1 isn't realistic talent wise. The problem I have about practice is that I don't think starcraft is something you should dedicate 8 hours a day every day for many months in a row in order to have a chance at winning. And btw in previous years it was still not the case probably now the game is getting more and more "solved".

Breeze, the only way to maybe solve that problem (that I can think of) would be to make new maps for every set of games, and release them only like the day before the match. That might favour the more naturally talented gamers more.

The thing is, once you do something competitive for a job, where you are paid to be better than the next guy, it's just not realistic to expect people to not practice for it 24/7. I know you're no idiot and you know that perfectly well, so I guess you are just against pro-gaming in principle. There's nothing wrong with that, but it is sort of odd for someone with almost 1000 posts on a pro-gaming dedicated site =p

Well, I think ppl will think of me the way they thought of Fisheye last year - they thought he was a lucky newb. But imo Fisheye proved to be one of the best european players ever.He prolly deserved my spot better than me.Ive never seen such a thing.I was looking at his screen and seeing 20 secs of no clicks at all - just thinking. Then Im looking at the obs screen and i see incredible strategy and the ability to micro at like 3-4 different places.Prolly trek fans were like 100 times more than Fisheyes ,but now its obvious whos the better player.

@ beast,

Man what do you expect ? that everybody laughs at you cause you got owned by Xellos ?
Imo it was absolutely clear from the very beginning that no non-korean had a chance to give xellos a real competition.

Xellos is playing Tournaments with much higher skill than WCg every week !
So its just normal the he onws everybody @wcg except Midas and Foru

"I don't think anyone is going to fault you for being nervous vs Xellos"
i second that.

And its not so important who got #3 or #4 or anything except #1 and #2
you played a great tournament and the Koreans owned.

thats all about it

I don't know who said Fisheye was a lucky newb last year but that's horseshit as far as I'm concerned. His ability to come up with so many different trick strats for those retarded maps, backed up by really solid play, was extremely impressive imo. He deserved and earned his #2 ranking, and he didn't have a free ride to get there.

Heh ,i think this was the WCG which i entered with least expectations and least training.Only thing was I was constantly reminding my fellow non-koreans at the WCG that Im the best TvT player outside Korea and Im quite confident at that(I think the 3 russians are the other good TvT players).I got incredible luck this year.If I had it 2002 or 2003 where I was much better in comparison with the rest I could have played final.(especially 2003 ,where just getting out of the group 2nd was a bracket easier than this year).

Im actually a bit surprised I played TvZ that good vs RRB, who raped Elky and Veg.I thought I have no chance in a normal game, since i hadnt played TvZ in like a month ,thinking i wont need it.But after failing my unorthodox strat on kohral(again timing is everything) I tried playing solid and raped him.

P.S. Im sure I could have done much better in the semifinal If i had managed to get my front expo running on Kohral or played Gorky(you start in midgame there, its just strategy) or Martian(i had an incredible strat).I wasnt confident at Dahlia though.I guess thats why the koreans were choosing Dahlia for TvT.Its easier to play vs amateurs on it since its mostly timing and they suck at it.If you contain, you win.

I'm not trying to start an arguement here, but I must say, I'm not quite sure you understand the nature of the word talent. You do a fair job defeating yourself when you say it's a unique ability, even though we're talking about a comparatively large group of people (Koreans). Willpower and determination, althought admirable characteristics, are not suitable subsitutes for talent. I would venture that their ability to practice to much is more a product of their environment than any innate ability. Korean culture is far more conducive to starcraft players than any other in the world, so it's no large wonder that the dedication and relentless drive they bring to their practicing is singular. Talent should be a word reserved for those who have shown ability not through sheer repetition but by seemingly divine will. I could practice Starcraft every day for the next 30 years, and I would be no more talented than I am now. I would be more technically proficient, but my innate, inborn ability would not have changed. That is the nature of talent. I am in no way saying that anyone in particular is untalented, but that talent should be measured the right way.

Beast, I've heard that all the players get 500 bucks just for showing up. Can you verify that? Also, are there any cash prizes beyond just top 3? Like for example, is there a bonus for getting out of groups, or for getting to quarters, or whatever?

I think talant is overrated. Its just some ppl have a better way of thinking of others. You may call them smarter, but its not exactly like this.I mean if i think in a way that lets me see more options in SC easier you may say I have talant, but thats about it.I should say the most obvious example of great undertanding of the game is Fisheye ,who just knows apm is shit and is making like 100 and not to repeat myself ,but he played godly vs Trek today.
I guess the saying is true -genius is 30% talant, 70% practice.

Nah ,this is BS.You get a prize ,worth 1000$ for 4th place ,though and 700 for top8.Not sure if its the exact sum though.

well Brood, I'm just saying there are different kinds of talent. One kind of talent might be a naturally faster hand speed. One talent might be really quick eyes, able to track every blip on the minimap at all times. One talent might be a very analytical mind for strategy, allowing a player to always know what the best thing to do is. Maybe a talent is being more creative and coming up with original solutions to old problems. A talent could be a strong cross-brain interactivity, giving you exceptional abilities to multitask. Maybe someone's internal clock is superiour, giving them an edge in timing. And maybe someone just has the stones to keep grinding away, day after day, hour after hour.

If you are willing to call all of the first things talent, I don't see why the last thing shouldn't be a talent too. It's not as though there aren't Korean progamers who just practice harder and are more dedicated than others. Why not say they have their own unique talent as well? It's really just semantics, but I feel like when you are calling all the other things a talent, but not determination and will power, you are cheapening and disrespecting that aspect of being a great player. I've played provincial level sports, and believe me when I say that any coach I've ever had would trade in every exceptionally talented player for an exceptionally hardworking and determined player any day of the week.

@ hautamaki
As i started starcraft the first site i got in contact with was starcraftgamers.com.
And the first threads i got in contact with have been massive flame threads vs Fisheye.
(this was after he won vs elky in WCG 2003)
the majority of the swedish broodwar comunity said that fisheye was a lucky noob.

After Fisheye got #2 nd in WCG 2003 it seemed that the whole starcraftgamers.com community(not only swedish people) considererd Fisheye an unskilled bastard with a very lucky draw.

but i think nothing similar will happen to beast

I wasn't "rambling", I was replying, and the last sentence should have made it clear that I was making no value judgements on anyone, simply talking in generalizations to illustrate a particular point. I believe Koreans are at the top because they have a great mixture of talent AND practice.

hmm, I don't frequent the scgamers forums, I have too many forums to post at as it is. I didn't know there was a backlash against him (fisheye). But if I did, I would have cussed them all out! =p

This isn't the thread for this type of discussion, so I will keep it short. There are people who have played five or even ten times the ammount of games of some progamers, but their repetition and practice will never bridge the gap that a progamer's talent has made. All great players must practice to be great, but it is their talent that allows them to rise above the rest, not simply the hours they devote. Under the right circumstances, anyone can have willpower and determination, and that's why they are not unique talents. Would your coach rather have someone who is determined or someone who is determined AND talented? The two may co-exist, but they are not the same thing at all.

I'm not talking about a daily comparison to a progamer's schedule, but you have to consider there have been people playing the game consistantly since it came out, who have played thousands upon thousands of games, and they still couldn't hold a candle to even a new, up and coming progamer.

Heh, I were saying I would be able to beat Xellos before that, not just give him a harder time ,so i guess i was cocky enough .And I still think I can beat him if I play my best. Its just its very hard to play your best in a tourney.

This post is very deep and reveals the closest thing to the truth. He feels he can beat Xellos, but it's impossible because Xellos is used to big tourneys like these where there is tons of pressure. And like Manifesto says Xellos seems more calm playing in these big games then in an interview. The difference is the tourney experience.

Well, play the computer 30000 games, then well talk.

no
your post is just... wrong
i don't know anyone who has competitively played bw that much
doubt you do either

it's not like most progamers just started playing bw when they become pros

So what you're saying is, the only people in the world who've played more games than some of the newer progamers, are the older progamers? What about [[RaCe]]ZZang?

Of course practice alone doesn't make up for a lack every other talent, I never said it did. What I am saying is that the ability to practice and focus is a talent just like any other. If you think that given the right circumstances, anyone can devote themselves to something, I think you are just wrong. Either you happen to be one of the very very few people who can and take it for granted, assuming everyone can do it, or you have never actually tried and put yourself to that kind of test.

When I played football and wrestled provincially, I was always one of the hardest working and most dedicated members on my respected teams. I was not very talented or physically gifted compared to many of the born athletes on my teams, but I held my own through the sheer force of will. Yet, I do not even compare to the amount of willpower and dedication and focus that Korean pro's have. I was willing to go the extra mile during practices, and give my 100% effort until I was puking on the fields, play hurt and never give up and all that jazz, but I only had to do that for a few hours every second day or so. When it comes to playing SC, I cannot force myself to put in the extra effort, even when I had damn good reasons and circumstances to do it in. Compared to the average joe on the street, I have way more heart and determination, but compared to the best of the best in SC, I'm sub par. I have practiced hard to place in tournies or join certain teams or represent my country or clan to the best of my ability in a number of competitions, but I can only maintain it for a week at the very most before I get completely turned off of SC. Even when there was money on the line, I was never able to force myself to practice for more than a few games every day for any period of time. I don't look at myself and say "wow, I must have a shitload of natural talent at this game because I can beat or compete with people who probably play way more than me." I look at myself and say "goddamn, I am never going to get anywhere with SC until I can get my shit together and start playing for real. I was at my computer for 10 straight hours tonight, but I only played 3 games of SC. What the fuck is wrong with me!!"

i dont know who [[race]]zzang is and no thats not what im saying
im saying that in order to have played 5x more games than yellow, boxer, etc you would have had to play 24 hours a day since starcraft beta

i think you underestimate how much alot of these ppl have played

until 7 months ago i had played consistently since starcraft came out(though not competitively until about 1 year after bw was released)
i couldnt hold a candle to progamers but its only because A.)they still practiced more than me and B.)they had better training

Weird that every time i argue with someone(live) it ends up as the "is there talant" question.I can only say 1 thing. The world is made out of willpower.

yah, the quality of the training matters way more than the sheer time put in, but assuming that all progamers get top quality training, the amount of time and focus put in starts to matter more

I suppose in the end it comes down to where your belief lies in the spirit of the word talent. This discussion lacks any cogency at this point, so there's really no point in continuing it.
