About a month ago Shauni made it out of the first edition of TeamLiquid Arena alive. This cannot happen. Today we announce TeamLiquid Arena 2. It will not be as easy. This time, the players will be better. This time, the handicaps will be harder. The gloves are off. This time, it’s War.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/keit/TLArena.jpg) Banner by keitPOLL TOPIC
Let’s get right to it. The concept is easy: One superb player faces off versus several newbies, 8 of whom he has to defeat. The catch? After every win he gets one more handicap assigned to hinder his play. We did a previous edition, in the topic of which there are more details. Read it here and read about how that event went here.
Once more, a contestant will enter the Arena and face its horrors. The event will be broadcasted live on the 23RD OF OCTOBER, 22:00 CET (13:00 PST, 16:00 EST, 05:00 KST on Saturday 24th).
Now that we have the official part out of the way, we’re very pleased to announce our contestant. He’s one of the best players from the European StarCraft scene and we’re very happy to have him. We’ll give you a hint first.
TeamLiquid Participation
Players – Once more, we’re calling on the lower ranks to provide us with brave Davids to take on this Goliath. We’re upping the level a bit, allowing D+ to C+ to participate. Post in this topic providing your ICC id, a link to your profile, you rank and your race. Your account will have either finished in the designated rank range or reached it as of yesterday (the day before this post) with a + Show Spoiler [minimum amount of games of] + C+:110 C : 90 C- : 70 D+: 50
We’ll randomly select 8 people from the ones to sign up within the next 24 hours (to give everyone a chance). After that people wll be added to reserves like last time. We’re initially excluding people who played/failed to show up last time.
Handicaps – Based on our experiences last time we chucked out some handicaps and inserted some new ones. Yes, they are harsh but they’re supposed to be. We’re asking you, TL, to fill in the blanks. Don’t complain about how strong they are – come up with stronger ones! Post your thoughts and we’ll get a poll going again. + Show Spoiler [Handicaps] + Upgrades: No Z Legs // No Goon Range // No Storm // No forge ups Units/Buildings: No Zealots // No Observers // Gateway cap Max = 5 // Assim cap M=1 // No Shuttles // No (Regular) Archons. Other: Give vision// Initial Peon Sac // Double Tech // 3x TL Submission
Maps – Maps for this issue will be: + Show Spoiler +- Nostalgia
- Othello
- Rush Hour 3
- Neo Medusa
- Outsider
- Tornado
- Moon Glaive
- TL Pick
Again, one open spot. You know the drill: suggest maps and we’ll poll them.
That’s it for now, the sign-ups are open, the stage is (being) set – We hope you all tune in!

T_T no love for low player
Can't wait to see it
|
Nice :D ClouD is one of my favourites n_n
Don't have enough games to try participate plus I am not free to do it this weekend (already staying up until a stupid hour to host the Dutch tour anyway -.-) but I will try convince some Aussies to play - SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE SHOW THESE GUYS HOW IT'S DONE.
|
|
Whaat. So I can't play cause I'm too bad? This is gonna backfire. C - C+ is gonna rape Cloud with enough handicaps..
|
Yeah, I don't see a C+ player losing to Cloud with some of the handicaps.
Cloud is awesome, though, so I'm sure this will be cool!

iCCup ID: edwin.jung, ASL-kOre, SCm.kOre Profile Link: edwin.jung ASL-kOre SCm.kOre Rank: Max D+ / Current D Race: Protoss
I have 50+ games overall, but I swap accounts alot. Will I still be able to play?
Map: Neo Medusa
Handicap: The opponent could ask Cloud 1 question during the game where he would have to answer truthfully, but it would only be a Yes/No question. An example of this would be something like "Are you going reavers?" or "Did you take an island expansion yet?".
EDIT: I would like to play Cloud first if possible, just want to try out my PvP skills and would like to test it out without handicaps.

Been waiting for the second episode of this, too bad i don't get a chance to redeem myself. I'll resubmit my handicap ideas though: + Show Spoiler +Handicap ideas: - Not allowed to take natural expansion.
- Wait X seconds before starting to play.
- You may only build probes from the Nexus you start with.
- Link: All the buildings you build must be connected (touching one another), first pylon is built right by your first nexus and so on.
- Time trial: If you havent killed your opponent in X minutes you loose.
- Mass transfer: If you choose to transfer probes from one base to another, you must transfer them all.
- Hero unit: If a specific unit dies (first combat unit, first nexus, whatever) you loose.
- Lucky one: Shauni gets to choose which handicap he gets this time.
- Unlucky one: LeperKahn chooses the handicap Shauni gets this time.
- Shuffle: All handicaps are removed, and the same amount+1 new handicaps are added.
- Your opponents plays alongside an AI. (Glitching allowed)
- You cannot warp in buildings in your main.
- +1: Increases the "power" of one of the handicaps you already have. Example: The maximum number of Gateways is reduced to
6 4!
- Audio bugging: (Requires that Shauni is on vent with Leperkahn) Shauni has to answer questions, and do what he is told (unit sounds etc.)
- Let it be: You cannot enter your opponents half of the map until you're atleast at X population.
- Everytime you have a pair of dark/high templars you must merge them into Dark Archons/Archons.
And map vote goes to Monty Hall! (http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/maps/163_Monty_Hall_SE)

meh i would wanna play but its 7am for me

Will the mic levels actually be reasonable this time (I like the idea, and was really disappointed that the sound was so bad I couldn't watch last time)
|
|
lol @ going from playing vs D's to playing vs C+... C+ should put up a reasonable fight without handicaps.

yeeees, another TL arena! hopefully i'll be able to watch this one live also.
|
Handicaps?
- No T1 Units (Zeals, Dragoons). - Only 1 mining base at all times. - No Shuttles, no Recall. - No cloaked units and no observers. - Only ranged units. - Only melee units. - No spells. - No air units. - You are not allowed to attack an expansion Nexus/CC/Hatchery. - All your units start with 0 Shield (would need Editor use). - All your units cost XX% more. (would need Editor use). - The resources at your starting location are cut by 50%. (would need Editor use).
|
Well I suggested until c+ because non-koreans at that rank aren't yet too good, but could still produce interesting stuff. I never played with handicaps though, so I really don't know how hard it could get, but hopefully it will be interesting to play and watch ^^
|
|
Handicaps:
- Have to give your opponent shared vision - Play with only the mouse (this would be a bit of an "honor system" one, though) - No scouting with probes (but you can scout with zealots or corsairs or w/e)

I said good fight, not rape... And yes, most B+ players have probably taken down a progamer at least once.

you must build one of each production building before building another one
for example, if you have 1 gate, in order to build a 2nd gate you need to have a stargate and robo, and in order to build a 3rd gate you need to have a 2nd stargate and 2nd robo

Only allow the use of Zealots/Goons throughout the whole game?

LOL i second that, so good. However, if it is used, it must be used without Cloud knowing (otherwise it's no surprise!)

Hanicap suggestions: * Must manner pylon self and leave it there all game * Must build a Scout before Robotics/Citadel * Must build a Dark Archon before High Templar * Must research shield upgrade before any other +1 upgrade * No scouting with probes * Must build 2 Forges immediately after building the first one * Pylons cannot be warped near expos until the Nexus is complete * Must truthfully answer the first 3 questions an opponent asks (relating to the game) * First Robotics must always be building shuttles (a second Robo is needed for obs/reavers) * First Gateway must always be pumping out zealots * First Starport must always be pumping out corsairs/scouts * Nexus cap of 2
edit: I can't play this time. I'm leaving town saturday. SOMEONE RECORD THIS!!!

About the asking the question thing, having to type a full question would be more of a handicap to the opponent than typing yes/no would be for the player. Doing it on vent wouldn't handicap at all. I like the idea of having questions as well as having the player do something not-starcraft at one point but you'll have to rephrase/add detailto that suggestion for it to become viable.

I think a full question is definitely worth it.

map: demon's shiver
handicap: must play windowed mode with the bottom part (the portion with the minimap and unit portrait on it) hanging off the edge of the screen so the player can't see it. or promise to cover that part up with post-it notes.

Simple and cruel.
|
ICCup ID: [RUTGERS]Fana- http://www.iccup.com/gamingprofile/[RUTGERS]Fana-.html Rank: D+ Race: Protoss
Handicaps: - Can only destroy enemy support buildings (depot/pylon/overlord) as long as enemy has units (workers included). - Only buildings he can destroy are nexuses/hatcheries/command centers - Can only build flying units besides probes - No obs - No splash-damage units (archon/reaver/corsair etc.)

can only build a new pylon when supply limit is reached.

|
Handicaps?: (I'll be the one that comes up with the weird ones) Play with one hand tied behind your back? (depends how honest ClouD is) Play multiple players at once Must solve one assigned equation every twenty seconds and type it into the screen Play zerg and only make drones. Play terran and only play firebats Find Waldo 5 times while playing

Those are terrible. No one would be able to tell if hes doing the first one, and whos gonna count zerglings incinerated by a reaver and then go hurr durr you need to kill 99 probes now.

The only real change I would like to see to the format is for the player to start out with a handicap- it's just not fun to face them first off with no handicaps at all, for either player. (To compensate for this, I would make it so that the handicaps still max at 8, so that for the last 2 rounds the player has the same handicaps)

I'm pretty sure Pholon isn't gonna customize 8 different maps just for the possibility that he'll need one. Maybe once this becomes more of a staple event we'll start implementing things like this.

Exactly.

I could do it for you, it takes roughly 2 minutes per map. Just saying. There was really no need to jump on me for it.
|
Ideas for handicaps: - Only allowed to have lvl. 1 upgrades - Only allowed to have 2 probes max on geysers - Can't use minimap (Don't know exactly if this is possible)
|
what happens if cloud loses? is it over, or does he play another person with the same handicaps?
how are handicaps decided? slot (like ff7)?
suggestions for handicaps:
- nexuses must have zero shield before moving out (or close to zero if they were reducded recently) - no shuttle speed - no spells - must have 5 probes with army - opponent gets 15 sec head start (amt can be changed) - nexus light must ALWAYS be on
|
handicap suggestions-
-no production/tech buildings behind natural choke. -play on slowest game-speed setting. -every pylon/additional nexus must be powered by first pylon. (think it would be kind of cool, you'd have to have a big chain of pylons to expand a third time) -psi cap -100 -must mind-controll a probe/drone/scv, before GG. (and have one alive/have an enemy structure at game end)

All pylons have to touch your main mineral line (or some variant)
All buildings have to touch each other (kinda similar to the one above but I told it to Pholon before so don't think am blatantly copying )
All of a certain unit must be carried around in a shuttle, for example HTs, DTs, etc. So you have to unload for a battle then reload them just to make him use more micro. If you lose the shuttle maybe you have to keep your unit stationary
One random base chosen at the start, he has to build a pylon there and defend it all game or else suffer some big loss (like halve his population or something).
Has to make a Cookie Monster using units before the end of every game :D A pic of a cookie is also acceptable.
Must get observatory ASAP and constantly pump observers throughout the game. Or the same thing with shuttles if the gas cost is too much with obs.
Whenever the opponent says 'cookie monster' or 'C' (no copy paste spam, C can be for the D+ players because if they have lower APM it will affect them more) ClouD must respond with a quote from the cookie monster or a line from the cookie monster song :D
If there is 'no shuttles', make an island map part of the map pool :D Or perhaps when he draws no shuttles the next map will be an island map n_n

no hotkeys allowed, handicap for true pros
|
Oooh one more suggestion.
-all ground units aside from probes must be near pylons. so like, if you want to attack you've gota build a pylon line to where you're attacking, or build a pylon there and shuttle them in.
|
No rush 15 minutes, but he must make a rush build.
|
handicaps: No templar archieves. No observer Cant expand to his natural before 10 minutes into the game. Must play of 2 gas maximum (6 workers mining gas at the same time maximum means he can have 1 worker in 6 geysers). Maximum 150 food.

The handicap needs so be established before the game and removed. It can't be something the player actually has to do in the game. That would be ridiculous.
|
Can't attack the enemy base until Arbiter tech.
Can only make his gateways adjacent to the outer walls of his main (makes macro/pathing annoying as HELL and tankable as hell on a lot of maps xD).
Must start a nexus in the enemy base during every attack (or just outside the creep in Zerg's case). ++ Must retreat as soon as the nexus dies?
Must use scouts in every attack.
|
For the enemy:
Player has an invincible kakaru for scouting
Player has 2-3 invincible rhynadons that he can use to block building/ramps
Player starts with extra minerals/gas
Player starts with an archon or siege tank or something similar
Player starts with full upgrades/research
Player's buildings/units have 1.5 as much health
Player's build time is 2/3 for everything
All can be done with map editor (:

Those are soooo harsh.

A lot of them are not THAT harsh, like the scouting kakaru, or say 400 minerals/gas to start, or a single siege tank :p.

Pholon, when are the players announced?
|
Income limit: Can harvest from no more than 2 geysers/mineral fields at a time. Stealth attack: Enemy base must be entered only by observers, dark templars or units cloaked by an arbiter. Joker: Must tell a Starcraft Yo Momma joke at the very start of the game before starting mining, and before building an expansion. Expanding obstacle: Before building a nexus, must build a pylon at that location, let it finish, then destroy it. Doppelganger: Contender may invite a max. D+ ranked friend to join him in a team melee. Choke's on you: Must not cross the enemy's main ramp/choke on foot with land units. Must use shuttles, recall or flying units instead. Double trouble: When building a tech building (forge, core, citadel, archives etc.), must build a second one before building anything else.

My idea for a handicap would be an imbalanced map made by one of us.
Someone would have to design it (i lack any map making skills) but it could just be a 2 player map with one base having more minerals/gas, easier nat to take/defend, etc.. and the other base would be more open to attack/harder to defend and less minerals/gas.
The map could be rigged enough to give the challengers a good positional advantage and force the gosu player to expand and macro much better to catch up and also for them to play smarter and micro better so they dont suicide units into a well defended base.
It would take away the "remember your only allowed running 2 gas" type of handicaps and replace it with "if i want more than 2 gas im going to have to take this wide open 3rd base and try to defend it"
Just a thought

Is it possible to see the map pools first, or which maps we'll be playing on for our match before we choose? if not, I'll play Zerg then.

I've got a question. How are handicaps chosen? A UMS map?
Here's an idea: Someone could code a flash thing. It could look badass.
If I built that flash, Would you guys use it on stream? What have you got planned?

i dont think ums kind of handicaps are good

We've an UMS One that can randomly pick every handicap.
Someone did make us a flash based randomizer and although it looked really wicked we prefer sticking to one that is in StarCraft

Handicaps: I apologize in advance if any of these have been suggested before or are very similar to ones already suggested in the first TL Arena.
Powered Nexus You must place 4 Pylons in exactly this formation after placing a Nexus before doing anything else. Starting Nexus is exempt.
Sudden Death Losing any completed Nexus = instant death. (Losing or canceling one still being constructed doesn't count.) To make it easier to rule whether the Nexus was complete or not, the Nexus should be considered complete once the animation changes from the glowing orb to the building outline. This is technically a little before the Nexus is done, but makes ruling much easier.
Unit Patent The first building to produce a unit is the only building that can produce that unit. Thus, only the starting nexus can produce probes. If the first gateway produced a zealot, that gateway is the only gateway allowed to produce zealots, etc. To be nice, the patent is void if that gateway is destroyed though.
My Mine Each Mineral patch or Assimilator is allowed only one probe to mine from it at all times.
Sound the Retreat! The non-handicapped player may command the handicapped player to retreat 3 times during the game. When the command is given, the handicapped player must move all his units (including probes) back into his main base immediately. No unit may exit the main base until all his units are back inside the main and/or destroyed before reaching the base.
Shielded Pylons Every pylon must be powering a shield battery. Or, the pylon count cannot exceed the shield battery count by 1.
Battle Cry The handicapped player must quote a Protoss battlecry and send it to all (for everyone's viewing pleasure) before each battle or worker raid he starts. This is intended to give away his intention to attack and is not to be used to feint the enemy. Phrases include "My life for Aiur", "En Taro Adun", "All for the Empire", "Death to our enemies", "For vengeance", or any other Protoss quote that seems fitting.
The Illusion The first push the handicapped player makes must be comprised mostly of hallucinated units.
Warp Field Distortion No gateway units after the first 5 minutes
Glass Ceiling Cannot produce probes after 10 minutes into the game.
Rest in Peace No Dragoons.

This one's a tough handicap, but I can imagine it being pretty interesting.
-Maintain an APM of xxx throughout the whole game.
I was thinking 60, but then I realized how hard that would be in the late game.

This is gunna rock.
Those are good, nice trozz.
Some of my ideas:
-Buildings besides gateways / resources must be preceded by a completed shield battery, each time. (They cost 100 extra minerals.) -Must build a shuttle before your 2nd nexus -Can only enter enemy's main with air units, or ground units that were shuttled / recalled -No pylon until 9 probes
Looking forward to it!

handicap suggestion:
- Use combat-ex build (double observatory into 12 gates off 2 bases) (joke )
- Don't start mining until first probe is produced - You need to make 2 nexuses in each new base before you can start mining from it (you can still mine with 1 if 1 goes down). And you can mine if 1 nexus is complete and 2nd just starting. - not allowed corsairs and carriers. - not allowed to build in hidden/proxy locations early-mid game (manner pylons, scouting pylons, gas steal, proxy gates or robo, hidden tech) -must manner pylon yourself in the most horrible place and leave it there till end using first pylon built. -if you go a tech building (past core) you need to make that building twice (citadel, archives, obs, robo support, arbiter and fleet beacon) - when you start a nexus in a new base you must type (i'm expanding)

I think ClouD is an extremely good player. I will try my best to win against him in my upcoming match. Though I am known to be a not so talented player, I will try my hardest to show the fans an interesting game. Please continue cheering for me and loving e-sports, I will definitely work hard and show you the quality of my practice!
