Another thing I do not understand about the inclusion of NHoV is it`s lack of history. The other three maps were once extremely popular and were used in various progaming events for a number of years. In comparison, NHoV was used in a single StarLeague and two minor events. As such, it really stands out among the four maps even when balance is not factored in.
I do not understand. Was NHoV extremely popular back in the day among non-Korean players?

seriously, JLIG. I'm glad that there's an island/semi island map, I miss island game play going back to dire straights to neo forbidden zone, even gorky. You complaining about it now is not going to change anything. The players in the group chose to play on that map for the most part, so I dont know why you have such a problem.

wcg has been the most important tournament for people outside korea for a majority of brood war's existance.. an oldschool tournament should feature wcg maps, im personally sad it doesnt have more (like legacy of char.. I think that map would play out vastly differently balance wise now from before actually. )

NHOV is of huge significance for no real solid reason It's a map that nearly every oldschool top player is sure they have an unbeatable build on (except if they're zerg LOLOLOL)

If this was a casual tournament, I would have hardly cared less what maps were being used. However, considering this is a progaming tournament with a large prize pool at stake, I would think that the primary focus when creating a mappool would be to use maps that were as balanced as possible in order to give everyone participating a fair chance and thus prevent non-exciting one-sided games and an abundance of mirror matchups from occuring. Using Neo Hall of Valhalla is the same as if KeSPA retained Battle Royale in the ProLeague mappool. It simply makes no sense, considering the amount of money involved.
Plus, the other three maps at least have something going for them as far as balance is concerned. Lost Temple was the most balanced map to come out of the original stock. Nostalgia is statistically the most balanced map of all time, being the only map ever to have all three matchups in the 45-55% range. Neo Requirem, while horrible for PvT, is one of the best TvZ and ZvP maps in progaming history. However, nothing of sort can be said for NHoV.

Although I understand this, I would not think NHoV to be the first map to come to mind when one thinks of WCG.

So there is no good practical reason why to include this map? That just makes it more bizzare why it came into consideration in the first place.
Look, as I said, it is the decision of the organiser what maps he will use in the tournament. I am not trying to force anything here. I just thought that it was in the best of interest of both the player and the community that balanced old-school maps are used for the tournament, since it ensures a fair competitive environment and a greater chance for close and exciting games. However, considering the responses I have received, it appears I am the only one who really cares. As such, I will refrain from talking about the topic further.

If people playing on a map people don't like allows us to even have a tournament with a $1500 prize pool, then so be it. It's a fun map. Seriously, since SC doesn't have big tournaments sponsored by companies (except ESL), we have to rely on private donations. Would you rather have NO prize tournaments at all, or a $1500 event on maps that may be a little annoying to play on?

Great tournament ... just great
|
Damn I really wish I could play in this... if any player wants to give me their spot please contact me. I think I would do really good in this tournament since these are the maps of my day :D
|
Why people hate NHOV is beyond me, that map is great! Great memories about that map. Even if there is going to be another Nostalgia tourney, please but please, include New No Way Out. That map is even more asskickin Or even better, Dire Straits! Or Bone Canyon! Gauntlet seems nice as well, haha.
And why people are whining about imbalanced maps, I know for sure that most of you guys don't even play at such a sophisticated level that map imbalances is going to do you any favor or disadvantage. Even moreso, they don't even play in the tourney....
I am really really excited. Now I kinda hope people start to stream this kind of maps Kinda sick about "destination" right now....
|
Bah, I feel sorry for the zerg players. HoV will almost be an auto loss for them
Good tourney though, but maybe something like Plains to Hills/River of Flames would have been a better choice?
|
I love this event all the way be sure to release replays and vods!
I agree with Eriador about Legacy of Char, I loved that map. Great player selection except maybe for a few guys unworthy but overall It's just great.
Kinda big price pool to

Martian Cross but it was used 2003-2004 or so (for sure in 2004).
First WCG maps were Jungle Story, Hall of Valhalla, Legacy of Char and LT.

martian cross was awesome :D

This looks cool. Time to fire up 1.08-1.09 and look at old Valhalla reps.
