So much money on the line, I wonder who has all this money to fuel foreign sc tournaments
Also, I think leaving a few spots for random "casual" players with some laddering/whatever has a great atmosphere to it, makes the event feel more of a community event. (Highlander did that, iirc?)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the games.

Awesome tournament, Xeris! I love to see Old School maps being played once again. Who are these anonymous donors that keep giving us good tournaments?

On another note, the link for Nostalgia does not work.
Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.

Thx so much to the donor whoever it is! I think it's a really good concept.

Although I am very happy to see such an event take place and see some of the great old maps being used, I have to ask....why Neo Hall of Valhalla? By today`s standards, that map is horribily imbalanced. At least the three other maps are somewhat tolerable as far as balance is concerned.

I am not trying to spoil the mood, but I can easily imagine other old-school maps that would be far more fitting for such a tournament (especially with that much money on the line).

And I thought there were gonna be oldschool players, the only one I know is ret and I know for sure he isn't oldschool.

there are some relatively new players (kolll definitely isnt oldschool) there but almost everyone has been in the scene since like 2002 or something..

player selection is very good considering they both want people who have played for a long time and who are still playing.. and if ret is the only player you know among that list then you can't have paid enough attention to the scene to have any idea who is oldschool and not anyway.

Most of these maps are imbalanced and will cause boring rapes 90% of the time. The rest of the 10% of the games will be boring camp fests.

Sorry for the attitude but I don't udnerstand how people can want to watch a tournament on imbalanced maps.

a map being imbalanced does not guarantee a victory for the race with the advantage.. if a matchup on a map is considered really really imbalanced then the race with the disadvantage still normally wins like 40% of the time. additionally these maps are so old and people haven't practiced them in forever meaning that people won't have fine-tuned the imbalanced build orders. ;p

I would be surprised if idra lost any tvz on nostalgia tho, and the terrans are clear favourites on valhalla, but upsets do happen. ;p

That argument might hold as far as the first three maps are concerned, but certainly not in regards to Neo Hall of Valhalla. Island maps have always been horrible for Zerg and even Protoss have a fair amount of trouble with them. Unrefined build orders or not, Terran 1-base play is more viable then that of other races. Plus, Terrans can lift their Command Centers, meaning that on a map with unblocked expansions (such as Neo Hall of Valhalla), Terrans can take an expansion easier, quicker and safer then the other two races. This is a fudamental flaw of the island maps of the time, which cannot be resolved simply by hoping for upsets to happen.

Xeris is the organiser of the tournament, so it is up to him and the anonymous doner to decide what maps are used. I just think that, considering that there are much better balanced old school maps out there, it would be a terrible waste to invest so much money for games played on a highly one-sided map.

back in the day I was winning more zvp and zvt island maps than I was winning zvp and zvt land maps. but yea I wouldve preferred picking a different island map than hov, goliaths are honestly a little too good there.

but on halls of valhalla the only exp terran can liftoff to safely is a mineral only and that doesnt help much, islands are absolutely a gas war.

Not too thrilled about the players since none are really "nostalgic" to me, but seeing the old maps and having more day[9] casts is definitely a treat.

I consider everything after 2001 newschool. I haven't been in touch with community since than, I only got back in the community when the TSL started. Loved it and stayed with it. So when you are talking about oldschool and when I am talking about oldschool there lies the diffrence. Doesn't matter though, can't wait to see how people are doing at those 'imba' maps.

Love and cheers to you all!

i've been playing since april 1998. i know that artosis and louder both played from at least 1999 as well. mostly everyone else invited started later or at least arrived on the scene later. I know that "truly oldschool" would be something like jester pillars gadianton thor agent911 etc etc etc but the thing is, none of those players play anymore. with a couple exceptions, kolll prolly the most notable, this list of players is a very very good compromise between current skill and having played for a long time.

Back in the day, noone really knew how to play StarCraft optimally. But this is not 2001/2002, this is 2009. That means that map imbalances much more severely punish players then they did in the past.

As far taking expansions safely is concerned, I am willing to take your word for it since you have played on this map and I did not (although I think a Terran could take the expansions between mains much more safely then the other two races; they look so vulnerable to Siege Tank shelling). Even so, that does not change the fact that 1 base play is more viable with Terrans then with the other two races.

I am sure I have come off as a bit of a whiner, but that is not my intention. I just want this tournament to be the best it can be and I think it would be an awful waste if the games ended up awfully one-sided beacuse of the poor map balance. In order to make myself useful, here are some recommendations to potentially replace Neo Hall of Valhalla:

+ Show Spoiler +
Luna
Arcadia 2
Sin Peaks of Baekdu
Ride of Valkyries
Sin Gaema Gowon

While I am sure you can find slight imbalances on these maps as well (I can already hear IdrA complaining about Carriers on Peaks), they still belong among some of the most well-balanced maps of all time. At the very least, they are certainly more optimised compared to Neo Hall of Valhalla.

If you dislike those, you can check the Top 10 map lists I made based on a specific matchup in this thread. The lists are from early April 2009 and are thus slightly outdated, but should still be accurate for the most part. Plus, although some of those maps have horribily imbalanced matchups, I am sure you can find at least one map that is not too horrible even in it`s worst matchup.

did you guys even read the OP?

the players got to choose which map they preferred the most. thats why you see mostly terrans on valhalla.
With a gust of wind, perhaps.

I still do not see that as a valid reason to keep Valhalla, though. Infact, that is all the more reason to replace it, since very few people like a lot of mirror matchups.

Random is allowed? :O and on Island maps?

So you play blindly for 5 minutes if you're a toss or an unlucky terran?

a map being imbalanced does not guarantee a victory for the race with the advantage.. if a matchup on a map is considered really really imbalanced then the race with the disadvantage still normally wins like 40% of the time. additionally these maps are so old and people haven't practiced them in forever meaning that people won't have fine-tuned the imbalanced build orders. ;p

I would be surprised if idra lost any tvz on nostalgia tho, and the terrans are clear favourites on valhalla, but upsets do happen. ;p

I always found PvT really easy on valhalla but that was way back when. Granted I thought PvT was incredibly easy on every island map soo..... who knows =)

Another thing I do not understand about the inclusion of NHoV is it`s lack of history. The other three maps were once extremely popular and were used in various progaming events for a number of years. In comparison, NHoV was used in a single StarLeague and two minor events. As such, it really stands out among the four maps even when balance is not factored in.

I do not understand. Was NHoV extremely popular back in the day among non-Korean players?

seriously, JLIG. I'm glad that there's an island/semi island map, I miss island game play going back to dire straights to neo forbidden zone, even gorky. You complaining about it now is not going to change anything. The players in the group chose to play on that map for the most part, so I dont know why you have such a problem.

wcg has been the most important tournament for people outside korea for a majority of brood war's existance.. an oldschool tournament should feature wcg maps, im personally sad it doesnt have more (like legacy of char.. I think that map would play out vastly differently balance wise now from before actually. )

NHOV is of huge significance for no real solid reason It's a map that nearly every oldschool top player is sure they have an unbeatable build on (except if they're zerg LOLOLOL)

If this was a casual tournament, I would have hardly cared less what maps were being used. However, considering this is a progaming tournament with a large prize pool at stake, I would think that the primary focus when creating a mappool would be to use maps that were as balanced as possible in order to give everyone participating a fair chance and thus prevent non-exciting one-sided games and an abundance of mirror matchups from occuring. Using Neo Hall of Valhalla is the same as if KeSPA retained Battle Royale in the ProLeague mappool. It simply makes no sense, considering the amount of money involved.

Plus, the other three maps at least have something going for them as far as balance is concerned. Lost Temple was the most balanced map to come out of the original stock. Nostalgia is statistically the most balanced map of all time, being the only map ever to have all three matchups in the 45-55% range. Neo Requirem, while horrible for PvT, is one of the best TvZ and ZvP maps in progaming history. However, nothing of sort can be said for NHoV.

Although I understand this, I would not think NHoV to be the first map to come to mind when one thinks of WCG.

So there is no good practical reason why to include this map? That just makes it more bizzare why it came into consideration in the first place.

Look, as I said, it is the decision of the organiser what maps he will use in the tournament. I am not trying to force anything here. I just thought that it was in the best of interest of both the player and the community that balanced old-school maps are used for the tournament, since it ensures a fair competitive environment and a greater chance for close and exciting games. However, considering the responses I have received, it appears I am the only one who really cares. As such, I will refrain from talking about the topic further.

As such, it really stands out among the four maps even when balance is not factored in.

I do not understand. Was NHoV extremely popular back in the day among non-Korean players?

NHOV is of huge significance for no real solid reason It's a map that nearly every oldschool top player is sure they have an unbeatable build on (except if they're zerg LOLOLOL)

If people playing on a map people don't like allows us to even have a tournament with a $1500 prize pool, then so be it. It's a fun map. Seriously, since SC doesn't have big tournaments sponsored by companies (except ESL), we have to rely on private donations. Would you rather have NO prize tournaments at all, or a $1500 event on maps that may be a little annoying to play on?

Why people hate NHOV is beyond me, that map is great! Great memories about that map. Even if there is going to be another Nostalgia tourney, please but please, include New No Way Out. That map is even more asskickin Or even better, Dire Straits! Or Bone Canyon! Gauntlet seems nice as well, haha.

And why people are whining about imbalanced maps, I know for sure that most of you guys don't even play at such a sophisticated level that map imbalances is going to do you any favor or disadvantage. Even moreso, they don't even play in the tourney....

I am really really excited. Now I kinda hope people start to stream this kind of maps
Kinda sick about "destination" right now....

Bah, I feel sorry for the zerg players. HoV will almost be an auto loss for them

Good tourney though, but maybe something like Plains to Hills/River of Flames would have been a better choice?

I love this event all the way be sure to release replays and vods!

I agree with Eriador about Legacy of Char, I loved that map. Great player selection except maybe for a few guys unworthy but overall It's just great.

Martian Cross but it was used 2003-2004 or so (for sure in 2004).

First WCG maps were Jungle Story, Hall of Valhalla, Legacy of Char and LT.

Holy shit, Martian Cross has to be THE worst map ever used in a map pool. Same goes for Gorky Park.

NHOV sucks, true, but i loved the game between NTT and Garimto on that map that ended in a BC / Carrier fight. Does anyone have that replay?

Love the tourney though. Rooting for Jos al lthe way ofcourse.

Legacy of Char was a pretty nice map for 2v2
Paranoid Android produced some nice micro-oriented games
R-Point, Ride Of Valkyries, Neo Vertigo, Dahlia (!!!!!!!), Korhal of Ceres - I miss those maps :<

Nyoken is now in Eg and he does not play that often from what i hear, he is still a great player though. Squall still plays? I like him but havent heard anything about him in quite some time.

no its just that HoV is not an easy map for zerg ;p

we will see tho, i think zerg can definitely beat protoss there, the expansions are fairly easy to defend as zerg.

yea it's just a semi-island map, and with the hydra tech build with scourge backup I can see zergs taking a game from a protoss.

This tournament will be great fun to watch. Part of the nostalgia is that back in the day, Starcraft wasn't only about the korean touraments, so it's a good idea to have maps which are not really connected to progaming, like HoV.

Yea.... First game in round 2 I thought that the map brackets would swap with the LT group. Didn't realize that Nostaglia was the permanent bracket set for that grouping all the way to the bracket final.

really crazy format.

feeling off on these casts in general tbh. Maybe its the live format and I just need to settle down.

Sounds slike Idra vs himself rather

Yeah... MistrZZZ is something similar for the community as Idra, but he at least stops being BM after a loss.

Idra vs White-Ra game one, LMAO. That was such an unexpected strategy from Idra. XD

Eh...

I read thread and it all it gave me was links to streams where I either couldn't find the on demand lib (yours) or that had no games (day's). Soo, perhabs you should help us out here? Did this finish? And if yes, why haven't we seen a wrap up/finals thread (ya, I've seen "The Final 4") or an update of this one's OP?

Come on, you obviously put a lot of efort into this. Why on earth don't you give clear information on the finals!?

because both Mistrzzz/Draco are holding it up, Draco's had some problems with his mom being sick and Mistrzzz has just been totally MIA - neither of them have logged on MSN in over a week, and I haven't been able to contact them =P!

so there aren't really any updates to give at this point.
