Which do you think is most effective? Personally, I haven't seen that Much of tank wraith anymore, but I prefer it in any Terran vs Terran games. Is there a reason for that? One reason could be that both tanks and goliath are produced from the same building? Opinions? (Or facts..)

P.S. I used the search function...

Tank Wraith is a lot harder to mass and a lot more expensive than Tank Goliath for a weaker ground attack, about equal (maybe a little weaker) anti-Air and cloaking.

I don't think that's it's worth it.

Why was tank wraith originally used then? Only to harass an opponent's miners with wraiths?

To defend your FE, and to hope your opponent thought you were doing some kind of a two fac build and didn't get detection/AA.

wraith/tank loses to the cheaper goliath/tank combo. you might have some initial advantage of surprise but against better players this slight advantage will erode greatly as gol/tank is faster to mass and because of this is a better attacking combo mid-game.

back in the days of LT with islands and cliffs as well as the older patches when dropship movement was slower (and in vanilla when goliath range wasnt around), it was much easier to control the air with wraiths, which lead to control over the islands and natural expansions

back in the day everyone used to play on LT. If you got a nice army of wraiths, that was one of the easiest ways to take a person's ledge, which limited them to 1 scanner and made it very hard for them to expand. Goliaths pwn wraiths and they are a lot cheaper to make. The one advantage wraiths have is their mobility. In TvT, once tanks claim their spot and siege up, it's very hard to overtake their position, so a lot of assaults have to be done by dropship. If you have good scouting and good scanning, you can snipe down an entire army of units with a dozen wraiths.

tank/gol wins the fire power war cause gols do more dmg to both ground and air than the wraith does.
tank/wraith wins the mobility war because wraiths can go over any terrain, give tank vision, allow easy ledge taking, have great harassing opportunities, and kills dropships easy =)

wraiths were good to help contain and rape dropships.

They still can be used well, but since people tend to go alot of vuls and very few early dropship builds IMO its a bit more difficult to use them successfully early on and not get behind. People also macro much betetr nowadays, so you can get punished by mass facts while going say 3 fact tank with 3 port wraith, by like 8 fact tank gol with dropship or something. Same reason BC's arent as popular nowadays too.

edit:

also maps are way more wide open nowadays than they were in the past (less cliffs too, so even if they are narrower, most dont have cliffs) and wraiths in the center of the map arent so strong.

How do you go from where you are to where you want to be? I think you have to have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal and you have to be willing to work for it. Jim Valvano

yea

I think the option is map dependent. Larger maps with a lot of ridges and map artifacts favor wraiths. Wraiths on this type of map allow players to be aggressive against incoming drop ships as well.

Otherwise its best to stick with goths.

tank+bc is the ideal combo tvt but it's obviously difficult to reach. yamato / bcs allow you to kill front tanks so you can push forward easily and goliaths get absolutely slaughtered by tank / bc combo..

tank wraith is like people said soo much better on temple than most "new" maps
on a map like luna it's suicide
i think maps is the main reason why tank/goliath fares better, and it really does fare much better.

The only advantage is the increase in mobility, but if the map is wide and open, the bonus obviously isnt wort the extra gas and the fact that its strenght is weaker than tank/gol.

Imo its only effective on maps like longinus, cuz of the 2 gas expo. Running on 4 gases allows you to mass a lot of wraith / tank and it rapes any goliath/tank army on the move. As Terran constantly waste scan in TvT, they are always short, and if you catch your opponent unguarded with 15-20 wraiths and 10+ tanks you can already pick 3-4 gollies off before he scans.

it's also effective as expo-raids, because your opponent has to put up like 7-8 turrets if he wants it to be "kinda" safe. Still, 2 groups of wraiths can plow through a lot of turrets. You force your opponent to focus on a lot more goliaths than tanks, which allows you to limit his strength vs your ground forces (tanks). His ability to drop is reduced heavily, because even if he pulls off a drop, he'll lose all of his dropships and if those drops weren't only filled with goliaths, he's most likely to lose the units he dropped out.

The very weak point of wraith/tank is that it's useless in the early stages of macroing, so it has to be done undiscovered until you reach a good amount of wraiths (around 12-15 while adding up more) Because if he's prepared for it, you're fucked. But if he's not, he'll likely lose his first force of units, and when he does that, you're able to take down expos and establish some map control, and by then his mentality has already changed towards a lot of goliaths, which makes him weaker vs tanks.
Winners never quit, quitters never win.

Personally, I love the tank/wraith combo. You have complete map control with a sizeable force of wriaths. The mobility of wraiths make it easy to take and defend expos, and deny dropships. Since it requires a lot of gas, you'll want to expand early, and keep up expanding. This makes it difficult and slow to properly open with, and its probably better to just transition into after initial tanks and gols.

The original idea of wraiths/tank was to open with wraiths, hope he didn't have AA, keep him running around base while you expo and get tank mode, set up a contain at his nat / entrance / choke with a few turrets, and then use wraiths to kill any dropships that try to get out, thereby forcing him to try to break your tank contain. Even if a terran accidentally misses your big drop leaving your base, if he's good he'll be able to kill all those dropships, probably while some are still unloading, and then as Merz said if there's not tons of liaths in the ships, kill all the units too.

As for BC/Tank, ofc it's a viable combo. It's super strong, but Tank/Liath can beat it. I don't see many games with that kind of fight so maybe a better Tank/BC example can be found, but I played a TvT on R-Point a looong time ago that ended up being half map vs half map, fully upgraded liath tank (me) vs fully upped bc/tank. I won, but it was a very close and micro intense game (more for me than him). I guess that's kind of pointless to say, I was just surprised that liath tank was able to stand up to bc tank so well.

Tank/wraith wins if you can really have perfect micro to draw gols away from their tanks into your tanks range but really its just too micro intenstive harass wise ect to add to terran metal better to mass the cheep.
I have ass for brains so,
