Only to harass an opponent's miners with wraiths? back in the days of LT with islands and cliffs as well as the older patches when dropship movement was slower (and in vanilla when goliath range wasnt around), it was much easier to control the air with wraiths, which lead to control over the islands and natural expansions

If you got a nice army of wraiths, that was one of the easiest ways to take a person's ledge, which limited them to 1 scanner and made it very hard for them to expand. Goliaths pwn wraiths and they are a lot cheaper to make. The one advantage wraiths have is their mobility. In TvT, once tanks claim their spot and siege up, it's very hard to overtake their position, so a lot of assaults have to be done by dropship. If you have good scouting and good scanning, you can snipe down an entire army of units with a dozen wraiths.

tank/wraith wins the mobility war because wraiths can go over any terrain, give tank vision, allow easy ledge taking, have great harassing opportunities, and kills dropships easy =)

They still can be used well, but since people tend to go alot of vuls and very few early dropship builds IMO its a bit more difficult to use them successfully early on and not get behind. People also macro much betetr nowadays, so you can get punished by mass facts while going say 3 fact tank with 3 port wraith, by like 8 fact tank gol with dropship or something. Same reason BC's arent as popular nowadays too. edit: also maps are way more wide open nowadays than they were in the past (less cliffs too, so even if they are narrower, most dont have cliffs) and wraiths in the center of the map arent so strong.

this should be moved to strategy forum? yea I think the option is map dependent. Larger maps with a lot of ridges and map artifacts favor wraiths. Wraiths on this type of map allow players to be aggressive against incoming drop ships as well. Otherwise its best to stick with goths.

tank wraith is like people said soo much better on temple than most "new" maps on a map like luna it's suicide i think maps is the main reason why tank/goliath fares better, and it really does fare much better.

it's also effective as expo-raids, because your opponent has to put up like 7-8 turrets if he wants it to be "kinda" safe. Still, 2 groups of wraiths can plow through a lot of turrets. You force your opponent to focus on a lot more goliaths than tanks, which allows you to limit his strength vs your ground forces (tanks). His ability to drop is reduced heavily, because even if he pulls off a drop, he'll lose all of his dropships and if those drops weren't only filled with goliaths, he's most likely to lose the units he dropped out. The very weak point of wraith/tank is that it's useless in the early stages of macroing, so it has to be done undiscovered until you reach a good amount of wraiths (around 12-15 while adding up more) Because if he's prepared for it, you're fucked. But if he's not, he'll likely lose his first force of units, and when he does that, you're able to take down expos and establish some map control, and by then his mentality has already changed towards a lot of goliaths, which makes him weaker vs tanks.
