What do Jaedong and swimming champion Michael Phelps have in common?
Michael Phelps rose to fame in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, winning 8 golds while also winning another 5 golds in the 2009 FINA World Swimming Championships, making a name for himself as the world's greatest swimmer.
Lee Jae Dong, on the other hand, has won special awards in Proleague, as well as being named the MVP and having several individual title wins, currently ranking #1 in the e-sports rankings for 5 months straight.
So what do they have in common?
Jaedong has great management and micro abilities, but behind all that, his concentration ability is considered the greatest. He also has his own trademark of having deadly looking eyes that seem ready to devour his opponent whole while playing a game.
Concentration - that is what these two people have in common.
Being young players, both Michael Phelps and Lee Jae Dong use music to help them relax their minds and increase their concentration right before their match.
It has been known that 3 to 4 months ago, Jaedong started to listen to Eminem's 'Till I Collapse' - a song Michael Phelps himself is known to enjoy and listened to before setting his world records.
In Jaedong's iPod, the musics in it are mainly of the hip-hop genre, including songs by Eminem, T-pain, Black Eyed Peas and many other artists.
Jaedong himself mentioned that ever since listening to music roughly 3 months ago, his concentration during matches have gotten higher, his results have improved and that it has helped him to keep his mind under control - a sign that music indeed helped him increase his concentration.
Jaedong is now in the Shinhan Bank Proleague 08-09 Season's Grand Finals with his team, as well as in the semifinals of both individual leagues - the Bacchus 2009 OSL and the Avalon 2009 MSL.
Actually the music might help the athlete to get pumped up and the body releases catecholamines like norepinephrine, dopamin etc. These will put you into a fighting mode and heighten awareness. Phelps listens to music up until just seconds before his contests begin
I used to listen to music while playing sc. But then i got ninja'd by DT and i swear the game doesn't even try to warn you, the only way to know is to hear the slash. So never again.

I listen anyway and so loud I can barely hear anything from SC. I always get drop raped but well it doesn´t matter in D level.
Becouse whole article sounds like from some tabloid, they didn't have anything to write about so they compared greatest swimmer of all time to Jaedong and their music choices before performing.Whole article could be written without mentioning Phelps once, and comparing these two is just ridiculous.
I have JD's color mp3 (Only a cheap fake lol....) Guys with pink stuff here are so common. From phones to PSPs - pink is really popular even with my little students - the boys and girls (aged 2-5 years) fight over pink crayons and stickers - I've even had one 5 year old boy burst into tears because he didn't get the pink crayon. The article was kind of strange for fomos...
I started listening to music when I was like 13-14.
Always had better things to do when I was a kid, and was surprised to find out that some people really spent their precious time listening to other people sing/play instruments.

Haha! Pretty cool observation for a kid. And only a observation a kid could make. The world was so strange looking when we were children.

Most people don´t listen to music. It´s just there to prevent them from hearing their thoughts when they have no one to talk to.

When I swam I would get so nervous and hyper waiting for my heat to come up that I would be wasting energy being in that heightened state. I started listening to music just so it would help control my biorhythms but I found that the side benefit was that I also hit the water with a better sense of my stroke and body movement. Basically my mind was more focused. I don't know the science of it but I would bet that music mentally clears the mind of distracting "noise" especially if your like me and have a difficulty entering a calm state of mind before an especially big competition. Now that I think of it I'm going to see if I can wear headphones during my next billiards tournament =D Cool post and I dig the pink ipod hehe
When you said what do micheal phelps and jaedong have in common...i thought you were going to say they both smoked pot..lol not what i expected here, great thread thanks!:D I always thought of jaedong as like a metal head..not BIP and junk..

Michael Phelps is an example of a successful stoner. :D I propose we gather money to buy a new ipod for JD, fill it with decent music and send it to him.

FACT
Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
I lolled
yeah michael would. but he still wouldn't have gotten it.
Probability of being a champion given you listen to music = P(C|M) Probability of listening to music given you are a champion = P(M|C) Base rate of listening to music = P(M) = approximately 0.99 Base rate of being a champion = P(C) = approximately 0.01
Therefore, even if the probability of listening to music given that you are a champion is 1, that is, every champion listens to music, the probability that YOU will be a champion given that you listen to music is still no greater than 1%. Unless you want to ignore the fact that being a champion is so unbelievably improbable.

Anyway, maybe he borrowed it from his gf or maybe he got it from his mum. I'm sure there must be an other explanation than him choosing it
dude it's just a damn color, whats the big deal? It wouldn't be considered "uber-gay" in many countries, only by homophobes like yourself. Simple as that

Dont know if anyone has commented on this, but there was a study done not to long ago (couple of months) that showed the impact of music on your performance. They focused mainly on swimmers.
A swedish news-program actually tried this in a swedish elite-swimmer. They let her warm up with what would classify as a great song, melodywise, and then let her do a lap with the music playing, she actually beat her personal best.
So music does matter. Same goes for when driving a car, if you have calm music on you drive less agressive then if you have say metal playing.
I always listen to Rocky theme songs right before I rape the shit out of university finals. It's not bullshit, it helps.
That said, the real secret to success is insanely long and inhuman arms. Phelps is a freak of nature who's only purpose in life was to swim down the length of an Olympic pool. + Show Spoiler +
Okay, it took a tonne of dedication too, and I'm sure he's got other talents, but god damn.
