Wondering if it was possible. It looks like that's what happened at 3:07 of this video. Anybody know how this shot was taken? I thought playing Starcraft at a higher resolution wasn't possible.

I think they spliced together 4 different shots in that video, and no, I'm pretty sure it's impossible to play SC in a higher resolution, or everyone would know about it. =P

That's a pretty awesome effect, though. That would make observing at offline events sooo much cooler if they threw in shots like that every now and then...

To answer your question, no, SC can't be played at any resolution other than it's standard tiny size.

Lol well you could in theory make it bigger but your account would get banned so fast on bnet for having a heavily moded sc dlls etc. Also it would make alot more space for everything like your bottom half would be fucked up etc. I assume it is possible because it's just sprites that can be stretched and scaled also there used to be d2 stuff like that for like 1280x1024 sizes etc but the ui was so fucked up on those mods.
I have ass for brains so,
even when I shit I'm droping knowledge.

what would be interesting is if someone could modify the windowed mode plugin for chaoslauncher so that the window has a 800x600 or a 1024x768 solution.

the effect in the video is awesome. must've been a lot of work to put that together.

I used to take lots of screenshots of the same instance of a replay and splice them when i was more newblier. It was fun. Alot of those massive pictures were of games of me vs computer though. I'm quite sure i have one of the climax of a classic nada replay involving a large scale carrier vs battlecruiser confrontation on lt. I always wanted to take a giant picture of the whole map in an on-going game like those map previews you see, and poster it on my wall or something.

Woah, it's probably way harder to take tons of screenshots of a replay at the exact same moment in time as opposed to taking them with video and just syncing the frames.

Replays can be paused, so I doubt it would be too hard.

it's hard to make resolution better.. because u r creating pixels that were never there... so u don't noe where and wat to add there

i don't think it's possible unless blizzard does it... if some1 else does it it'll be their depiction of wat high resolution of a dark templar or something like should look like...

Doing it would involve pulling more map and sprite data from the RAM to the main screen. While 2D games don't quite work like 3D games, in that they don't have a camera so free movement around the place isn't possible, they do have the map data buffered in RAM, where the visible sections are taken from RAM and drawn on the screen. I imagine a 3rd-party tool to make it work would be similar to a maphack, but instead of changing visibility information, it changes how many pixels of the map are drawn at a time.

TL;DR version: The data is all there, it is just a matter of drawing it to the screen.

This + a good map editor + some unit AI corrections and a bit better pathfiding would be better than SC2 imo.

They can't, because it requires 4 different streams or so and really good synchronization of those 4 (or so streams). It'd be impossible to setup before the action is gone.

the real challenge is the fact that having 4 different angles requires 4 different observers

You would use the in-game drawing function. All the functionality is there, its a matter of modifying it so that its alright drawing at higher resolutions (drawing more pixels at a time). Unfortunately, so much in SC is based on the 640x480 being a constant that its a *lot* to mess around with. Easiest way with windowed mode (I think) would be to take the output from the game and scale it using some scaling algorithm (a lot of emulators and such have that) but thats fairly cpu intensive and can result in some graphical glitches.
Can you jam with the console cowboys in cyberspace?

I'll just copy paste my solution to this from an old thread:

You can easily work around by yourself though to play it in higher resolution.

You need:
5 internet connections, 5 computers, programming skills.

1) Connect the computers to bnet with different accounts.
2) start a 1on1 (obs) game from one of the computers.
3) make sure the other 4 computers gets the 4 observer slots.
4) Write a program that tracks where the screen is for the main computer, and make the four observing computers to view each one square of a 2 by 2 box.
5) send the image from the 4 observing computers to the main computer and have some other progrma paste them togheter to show them side by side. You should now be able to see 4 times normal resolution.
6) write another program to track your mouseclicks and to send them correctly, trough the main computers starcraft game, to control yuor army.

Piece of cake. 5-10 minutes maybe.

I heard it's a small patch made by some random korean..

Supposedly you can change the resolution of the game into 1280x1080 etc but I heard it's buggy and hard to use..

Given that they have upscaling TVs, I wonder if it would be possible to have upscaling on the computer so that the graphics looked sharper even if you couldn't see any more on the screen at once.

Can't you just change window's resolution? I believe the hotkey is ctrl+2+1+8+3 then alt+r then while holding down f4 or something like that, try all the f keys

no lol, but msconfig has screen res changers, dunno if itd work

No it requires actual hacking of the game. The hack seems to work by scanning 4 screens worth of info all the time and displaying it and it makes the minimap constantly change which makes it hard to play.

I tried it. You can get it here:
http://www.starcraftresolutionhack.de.vu/

If you're getting errors, try installing Microsoft C runtime libraries and .NET framework; that got it to work for me. After that, well... yeah, it's not really playable. Your inputs (and mouse movements!) lag pretty bad pretty quickly. However, watching replays "zoomed out" to 4x the viewing window is pretty amazing. You will probably need to turn your mouse speed up to navigate the replays, and the dragging on the minimap makes it flicker out until you stop dragging, but other than that, it's pretty cool to watch battles that way.

Personally i didn't notice any lag? Its only the bugs like minimap that caused a problem for me. Anyway least it has potential for observing, maybe when its less buggy id like to see some vod's with this maybe.

sure , SC needs higher resolution but this hack should be implemented into chaoslauncher and be like #ll so that only players with higher resolution hack can play against each other
otherwise it is unfair for people with lower resolutions (to play against people with resolution hack)

How exactly do you do taht?

Also Resolution hack keeps crashing on me for no reason. I do everything it says, run it with sc.exe
right click res.exe and run as admin but it crashes

It lags for me, but it's a pretty cool concept. If only this was discovered years ago and expanded upon.

That's so cool, it'd be neat if kespa switched to a shot of this once in a while.

On a side note what the fuck was the terran thinking lol

it works fine for replays but dont count on actually playing with this lol
after 10 secs it cant keep up with my mouse and it just starts making selectboxes on random parts of the screen and I cant control -anything-

oh and sometimes it fucks up my colors reaaaally hard

Yeah, the selections and sound don't always work correctly and if you're dragging the minimap the display lags behind because of the drawing method; its great for replays though

Yeah it would be cool if we could see a zoomed out view of some of the big battles.
I have no idea what that terran was thinking; I was just happy when I saw his entire army unsiege and move into the middle :D

Ummm , I can play Starcraft all the way upto 2560x1600 but I think it looks best at 1440x900

http://i42.tinypic.com/5ze7b9.jpg 209 FPS but actually my crossfire kicks in better at the higher resolutions :D

Hmmm... I wonder why it lags for some and not for others. I tried again at a different resolution, and it worked just fine for about 8 minutes, and then suddenly had huge lag. Ah, well, I wouldn't use it for more than replays and screwing around, anyway.

The reason the mini maps is selecting 4 areas is because it has to draw 4 zones on the screen to keep the game from blacking out the squares of 640x480, if you hold down the map you will see a single square being drawn at 640x480 and the rest of the game will black out, also when you're building if you just continue to build as normal even though it shows the building off to the side it will still build normally. also no I did not make this I.D just for this, this is always my I.D.

Indeed. I'm guessing that would make it easier to manipulate the drawbuffer to create true high-res, instead of just quad-screen high-res that this hack does.

> Given that they have upscaling TVs, I wonder if it would be possible to have upscaling on the computer so that the graphics looked sharper even if you couldn't see any more on the screen at once.

Instead of increasing the amount you see, what about using upscaling algorithms (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_art_scaling_algorithms) . hq3x is used by some SNES emulators and it performs anti-aliasing so it looks very nice IMO.

I have tried using dxwnd (see http://www.nynaeve.net/?p=52) but the starcraft profile doesn't let you do scaling, and when I used the generic one to stretch I have issues with the cursor.

did we even say it was a virus?
we closed it because it was a slack opening post and there was already this thread relating to this particular topic. there was no mention of 'virus' anywhere by hot_bid/zatic.

also, get rid of the smug attitude or else you'll be out of here as fast as you came.

Yeah it's crazy cause then you're able to see troop movements and see exactly how the player is micro-ing. I'd love to see progaming take advantage of this.

I think it moves the screem and takes a screenshot each time. Then it displays the combination of those screens. Of course a few additional fixes are necessary to display the interface and the selection rect correctly. On the minimap you can see how the screen jumps.

The fact that you keep saying this file has no virus, despite no one accusing it of such, makes it all the more suspicious. I think at least 4 of your posts about this file in it somewhere said it's not a virus. No one said it was.

And if you're going to introduce a new program, you should post more about it. That's probably why your original OP got closed.
