+ Show Spoiler +Yes, dreams can come true. With no official plans announced for a DS port of StarCraft or any of Blizzard's other PC games, two French homebrew developers have begun working on bringing the popular RTS to the handheld themselves, titling the game StarLite.
A limited demo (version 0.1) is available for you to test out in an emulator or flashcart of your choice, and, while it's clear there's still a lot of work ahead for the project, it's impressive how much the two-man crew has already accomplished in just three weeks of development. So far, players can select and direct units via touchscreen, build simple structures, and produce additional units. There are even a few enemy troops to attack.
The team plans to continue their work, eventually implementing the rest of the units/structures and a WiFi ad-hoc multiplayer mode for two players. To do all that, however, they'll need some help from several more programmers, so don't be afraid to volunteer your skills to the effort! Hit the gallery below for more early screenshots from StarLite.

i don't see how they could fit the whole game on a flashcart
|
yay?
not mine kind of dreams
|
seems pretty cool acctually, itd be good for killing time on journeys or whatever at school with some buds

Don't some of the carts take SD?
If they do, maybe you could do a small Linux boot that auto launched SC... Hm...
|
I can't imagine playing an RTS game on a nintendo DS =/
|
|
I'd have to imagine that playing SC on the DS would be more annoying than being forced to play mouse-only all of the fricking time.
|
I think you're missing the point of ULTRA PORTABLE SC.

the linux distro is already there, but if they want to bring starcraft to the ds they have to port it completely. running linux in the background plus wine plus starcraft would be too much. I think they are limited to about 8 MB of RAM.
|
btw, quake already works.
|
I just bought my DS Lite last night, I receive it tomorrow. Perfect timing.
|
damn i got a psp come on SONY
|
I'm definitely getting a DS
My friend has a flashcart; those shits are so imba -_-
You basically buy every DS game when you get it -_-

haha its really cool, verrrry glitchy of course, needs better controls.
And there's no clipping meaning you can walk through walls, etc.

Actually, the pen-controlled thing could work for a good mouse, rather than a joystick like the PSP.
|
The pen works pretty well for First Person Shooter. I hope one day there will be micro training maps. Those are fun and would go well with the theme of the DS.
|
I just tried StarLite and it is suprisingly good. It has its share of problems, but it is a very good start with a lot of potential. It looks and sounds like Starcraft, plus the controls are good. However, don't expect to be a progamer from playing this.
EDIT: I played a few RTS on the DS and StarLite is significantly better than what's available.
|
I just tried this and for 3 weeks work this is FANTASTIC. I hope this project finishes and doesnt fall through almost asmuch as im excited for SC2

What makes you say that? Name some "good" games for the DS. Perferably in PM so we don't spam this thread up.

I guess Blizz will shut this down.

I've always wondered what playing Starcraft on the N64 would be like.

Have you ever imagined what Heroes of Mana is like? OK, it's got some shitty things about it (horrible pathing AI), but it does do some cool stuff.
But then Heroes of Mana is much simpler and much less intense than SC, but still, RTS has potential on the DS! They just can't make it as multi-task intense as SC.

Haha!
I love how the hydra and the marines peaks over his shoulders

whatss different in the new version

They have age of empires for the DS

They have age of empires for the DS They do, but it's a turn based game, like Advance Wars. Unless they've released a new one I don't know about yet.

Believe me, it was terrible.
|
maybe thats why the progamers wanted the DS so bad at the selection
|
As long as you have it on your PC, you don't need it on your PSP.
