Fantasy Proleague Rules

After reading the SC manager game thread, which had a few mentions of a fantasy proleague akin to fantasy football, I decided to design a set of rules for a fantasy proleague and see what everyone thought of them. I tried to mark most of the possibly controversial/overcomplicated rules as optional, but for the couple I felt had to be included I explain myself in the design notes at the bottom. Please tell me what you think, and how I can make this draft ruleset better!

Fantasy Proleague Rules v.0.01

The Draft

Each fantasy proleague consists 12 players who draft progamers (with a randomized draft order) at the start of a proleague season to create teams of 12* with a minimum of 3 progamers from each race. It is highly recommended that players pick progamers currently on a proleague roster. There is no salary cap.

The League

The players then compete in a double-round-robin league, with two sets each week, just as in RL - the first set, in which every player plays, and the second set, where 8 players play, with 4 players being rotated out every week. For ease of organization, each player is assigned to a RL proleague team by the coordinator - each player then plays whenever and whoever their associated team is playing that week.

The Matches

Each match consists of 2 1v1s, a 2v2, and another 1v1, in that order; if the score is tied, an ace match will determine the winner. The maps for each game are the same as the associated RL match in the current set. For the 1v1s, players can pick any progamers in their roster who are scheduled to play a 1v1 during the current set (as defined above). For the 2v2, players can pick any 2v2 team that has at least one progamer from their roster. Both players in a match cannot select the same 2v2 team; the player who submits their lineup first gets choice of the 2v2 team if both players have a progamer on the team. For the ace match, players may pick any progamers on their roster, even those already selected for the previous games (though progamers who have already played a 1v1 are penalized, as shown below).

The Results

The results of each fantasy match for the current set will be determined after all the proleague games in the current set have been played. The first player to win 3 games wins the match. Each game in the match will be decided by points earned by the progamers according to the following criteria:

1v1

- If the progamers are of different races, the map in question has >= 10 games of the MU on record, and one race has a >=60% winning percentage in the MU on that map, then the progamer of that race gets 1 point.

(OPTIONAL RULE: If a map has > 2 but < 10 games in the MU, and the percentage is 100% in favor of one race, than the progamer of that race gets 1 point)

- The progamer with the higher ELO (according to TLPD) gets 1 point.

- If both progamers have > 5 games in the relevant MU, and the difference between the progamers' percentages for that MU (according to TLPD) is > 10%, the progamer with the higher percentage gets 1 point.

- If the progamer won their RL game that set, they get 3 points.

(OPTIONAL RULE: If the win was in the same MU or on the same map, the progamer gets 1 bonus point for each)

(OPTIONAL RULE: If a progamer had a Starleague match during the set in a different MU, they get 2 points for a RL 1v1 win rather than 3)

2v2

- If a player has both progamers in their 2v2 team on their roster, the team gets 1 point.

- If the progamer(s) from one player's roster on the team has a greater total number of net 2v2 wins than the progamer(s) from the other player's roster on the other team, the former's team gets 1 point.

- If the team won their RL game that set, they get 3 points.

(OPTIONAL RULE: If the win was on the same map or against the same team composition, the team gets 1 bonus point for each)

Ace Match

- Same as 1v1, except if a progamer was already in a 1v1 in this match, they only get 2 points for a RL win.

(OPTIONAL RULE: If the RL win was in < 15 minutes, the progamer receives the full 3 points, but if it was > 25 minutes, the progamer only gets 1 point)

(OPTIONAL RULE: If the above Starleague penalty is in effect, it stacks with the previous 1v1 penalty)

- If the progamer won the RL ace match that set, they get 2 bonus points.

Tiebreakers

For all types, the progamer with the greater number of points wins the game. Ties will be broken as follows:

- If one progamer won their RL game and the other lost, the former wins.

- If both won their RL games, the progamer who won their game in less time wins.**

- If both lost their RL games, the progamer who lost in more time wins.

The Winner

At the end of the double round-robin, the player with the best WoL record is the winner! Ties are broken by Game WoL, then 1v1 WoL.***

Design Notes

*The actual proleague roster limit seems to be 15, but since quite a few teams only put 14 or less progamers on their roster, there wouldn't be enough progamers to go around if the limit wasn't smaller.

**Length of game isn't the best indicator of who won their game by more (or lost by less), but it's the only one of the few statistics available for SC matches that is currently accessible on TLPD (via the VODs).

***I suppose playoffs are possible, but they couldn't follow the bo7 format since there would only be the players from 2 teams available for every fantasy match (unless the league was only round-robin, in which case the playoffs could use the continuing RL proleague matches but would end considerably before PL did).

i think this is more of a manager game than a fantasy league, but using players from this current time and using tlpd statistics.

I'd love to run something like this, but given that I'm going to Guildhall in a few weeks and will be up to my ears in level design, I don't think I'll have the time to personally run one (though I'd love to participate!). So right now, it's more of a rules outline to use as a basis for discussion, and I'll add the more logistical sections like submission times and trading restrictions later, after we determine which optional rules should be added, which rules should be modified, etc.

For example, under the current rules, (P)Reach would get a point over (P)SoO[S.SiR] in PvP percentage (58% to 42%). However, if we used the last 10 matches in the MU as the scale (as preferred by the Korean broadcasters for pre-match stats, with the benefit of allowing for progamers with less than 5 games in the MU), (P)SoO[S.SiR] would have the point over (P)Reach (4/10 to 2/10).

With three weeks of proleague left, I'd bet we could get the rules solid enough to at least run a staff-only test fantasy proleague.

You're right, but the problem with trying a strict fantasy league with SC is that there's simply not enough easily available, objective stats to base a league on. The main stat is W/L, but what do you then do when both progamers win their matches? Most of the manager-game elements were included to break these ties, and to add an additional layer of strategy into formulating lineups; however, I believe that it's still more of a fantasy league than a simple manager game in that the player doesn't have control over their progamers' "stats", or whether they'll be playing in RL during a given set.

Isn't it better to watch the real korean pros in the real leagues - it's a lot more simple . To run this someking of manager game you need more people for staff and probably an indepedent site for work space ?
