Hey there, I just got back to BW and I've been playing my first ladder games (US West). So I encountered this Terran player named marinexD I beat him once and when I was about to finish his base the game started lagging insanely. Since he wouldn't answer I decided it was not worth it and I just quit (and got a loss). Today I played against him again and I was about to win and the game lagged again. It runs at 1 frame each two seconds. I asked him if he was doing it on purpose and he said that yes, he is lagging on purpose because he hated me or something like that. He also said he has a "hack" and that next time I play against him he would do this again.
Since he plays Terran, he lifts his buildings and spreads them all over the map. Also spreads workers and builds supply depots everywhere in the hope that the enemy will leave out of boredom and he will get a win.
Yes, he's a very, very sad man.
So I was wondering if this is common in US West or ladder in general, because it's really annoying. Also, is there a way to report him so he gets banned or something?

This lag hack has been around awhile. It's been reported on several times but Blizzard's team is too small since so few people do it for them to put any real attention on it.
There are other hacks floating around too but again, too small of a Dev team and too few people actually use it for it to be bothered with on an old game like this.
Eventually you'll make your own internal list of people and you'll just auto-quit vs them and move on to the next game. It's only a few points on ranked, nothing that can't be earned back.

Can confirm this same thing against the same opponent. Don't sweat it, just leave and go to the next game. It is what it is.

Fuck that, I would build scouts and kill him no longer how long it took, even if it took 5 hours lol

Thing is, the lag is so bad, that literally for 1 minute to pass in real life, is only 2-3 seconds in the game... not even exaggerating. It lowers the frames to being almost non-existant. So you won't even be able to build or move units, essentially.
That's why you just don't care and leave the game.
Just to be clear, I don't think it's a "hack" by any traditional sense. The guy must just be maximizing his bandwidth potential in some way and causing it to happen. For instance, imagine starting a torrent and using all your upload speed. Along with that, he could also be maxing out his RAM / CPU usage. But just enough so the game doesn't crash but causes this type of lag. Just my theory. I don't think there's some specific SCR hack that causes this.

I had a similar game few months ago. I had no idea it's a hack. However, I value time more than anything so I just left and was happy about it.

How DO you report people on ladder, though?
|
A long time ago I did this type of thing against BM user (guy who would insult after he thinks he win the game). You just have to run a program that slows down your computer, can write a stupid endless loop if you know how to and run it. If your computer is putting all ressource into that starcraft will run slow and it will affect the gameplay speed online.. You can only report that I guess. Ofc blizzard should deal with reports, like Iccup have always done. On D2 they have also stopped dealing with bots which keep destroying the ladder and generating rare items constantly etc.

Still should be quite easy for Blizzard to just ban his SC:R account? He cannot play ladder on vanilla anyway.

It’s probably not a hack though he just throttles his internet severely. So i dont see what blizz could do about it.

No, it's a hack, most likely targeting the internet packets that the game is sending and holding each one for the maximum amount of time before they time out, or deleting every X packet, or something malicious like that. Remember, starcraft was released in 1998 when most of the world still had dial-up. The game can work with a 14.4kbps modem. It's not a typical internet throttling trick.
What blizz should do is automatically flag users that lag to this extreme degree (consistently), and only let them play with other laggers like this on ladder. That would be a glorious revenge.

As far I know it's: /REPORT [NAME OF THE OPONENT] [Cause]

I think this has to do with the peer-to-peer connection in SCBW. If his internet is slow, both players will lag. I think it's hard to counteract from blizzards point of view.
FIFA and other games using peer-to-peer suffer from the same throttling 'hack'.

There are ways to do this without using a 3rd party "hack" to be honest, so it would be quite difficult to prove, unless you have seen / used this said hack, I don't think it exists.

Can you just minimize the game/ go afk and wait him out, if you really want the win badly enough? It's a massive waste of your time but I guess it's a waste of his too. Dunno if it's personally worth it, but it sounds like he can't win the game until you quit. Go grab a snack or something, go do homework, etc.

Yea I would play with one hand and watch YouTube on my tv or something, maybe u can even get some chores done while playing if it’s that slow. I wouldn’t let some donkey try to milk a free win off me that way tho

didnt someone used to maintain a list of hackers/cheaters a long long time ago so ppl could just ban them when they showed up? i wonder if this could be done again
|
No, it's a hack
Is there any proof that this is an actual hack? Can't you just toggle windowed over and over on a shit PC to accomplish the same end?
Is the game perfectly laggy or does it clear up for a few seconds when he types?
