So, a Valk missile does 3 damage to a Scourge or Muta? Am I doing this right? A valk only does like maybe 10 damage to a Scourge? 1v1?
why do valkyries do explosive damage?

I think Blizzard backpedaled on the Valk attack jam bug at the last minute, for whatever reason…

Valks do explosive damage. Source from Blizzard's official guide: http://classic.battle.net/scc/GS/damage.shtml Source from liquidpedia: ![]() Source from wikia: http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Damage_types Explosive damage does suck vs small units, however the splash area that valks have is really good at hitting a lot of units at once so even though they don't do full damage to muta and scourge, they pretty much hit every single one. This leaves the remaining muta/scourge to be cleaned up by m&m or other units (including more valks). They only do a small amount of damage per missile, but they fire 8 vollies of 2 missiles each so this adds up. The reason they kinda suck vs large units is because those units tend to have base armor. Valks missiles are only 8 or less damage so even though it does 100% to large units, armor will deflect that by by even more. Remember, I say 8 or less because only a single missile from a valk's shot hits directly onto the target, the others spread around. (Read the liquipedia link for the explanation) So in summary: Regardless of damage type, valks are good against clumped units and non-armor units. Mutas hit both of those criteria. Capitol ships typically spread out more and have armor which mitigates the effectiveness of valks.

you are in fact doing this right OP. valks do explosive dmg because lurkers are transdimensional (you are welcome). both valks and corsairs do explosive dmg (100% to large, 75% to medium, 50% to small). mutas are considered small. the purpose of going valks in any scenario other than mass air tvt is to catch your opponent off guard or to accumulate style points. hope this helped. ^^

Holy moly. I tested it, because I was pretty sure that the liquipedia page was incorrect, but indeed they do explosive damage. Facepalm. ![]()

They have different attack types, though (Corsair's is appear on target with extremely low attack cooldown, Valkyrie's is hit area with multiple projectiles fired per attack cycle). The reason why both of these still perform well vs Mutas and Scourge (Corsairs at least, Valkyries against Scourge is a coin toss, at best, due to the long hit delay and lack of mobility while attacking) is the splash damage. The combination of low individual but huge aggregated splash damage is also the reason why critical numbers are so important to have of either unit. As I understand it all missile attacks are explosive type damage. Depends on what you actually consider a "missile". Photon Cannons do normal damage, Vultures do concussive damage, even though both have traveling projectiles. On April 08 2018 23:01 Liquid`Drone wrote: Also because the Zerg's dedicated air-to-air unit, the Devourer, which is also a great counter to Valks and Corsairs in theory, is to high up the tech tree to be a viable option when the first air encounters happen.they do explosive because they would be way too good vs mutas otherwise. They're already plenty good as it is, but at least now it's possible for zerg to continue building some air units - if they control them very well - even after a terran makes a couple valkyries.

At any rate, here's a simple equation explaining Valk damage, incl. variables such as unit size type, distance from direct hit, attack/armour upgrades, air humidity and air density (which affects speed and impact of shockwave): ![]()
