Since then I've followed Jaedong constantly. He's always been my favourite player and inspired me to play Zerg. His Golden Mouse win was just the most exciting moment for me. When the opportunity was presented on TL, I bought a Hwaseung Oz jacket (which is now peppered with autographs from folks like Day9, Huk and Ret). But just a while back, I actually got to meet JD himself and Flash when he came to Toronto for an SC2 tournament. With my limited Korean, I told him how much of a fan I was and got pictures with him (apologies to my friend for only taking nervous blurry photos of him with the two) and of course, got them to sign the jacket. Literally one of my best memories. While I fell off from following SC2, I immediately started tuning into JD's stream when he started BW again. I was so impressed and happy with him taking 2 games off of Flash in ASL 3 with strokes of genius but his loss seemed inevitable throughout the whole series. In my head, I know it's highly doubtful he'll win his perhaps final ASL. But I'm rooting for him til the end. When he retires, I'll be sad, but what's is important is him pursuing what he thinks is right. Health is absolutely super important. But I know that even when that happens, I'll still continue to be his fan. Jaedong fighting! Go win ASL 4!

The article mentions wrists and finger pain, also eyes tearing. So, being with a medical diploma, I assume it's something like carpal tunnel syndrome and chronic inflammation of the finger joints. The eye condition I know nothing about as eyes are far and away from my field of knowledge. It can simply be that his eyes are getting tired easily as they've been forced to focus on the screen for such a long period of time and he might need a few months of rest from active focusing on close objects. It can mean that he needs some form of surgery, we don't know from the article itself. Maybe his tear ducts are inflamed, I don't know. Anyway, JD is an iconic figure and I love to watch him play even though I've played like 6 games with Zerg in total. He is an artist. But I think he should immediately retire from active gaming, this is ridiculous, to put such an enormous amount of stress on his body.

I feel like he's been sort of like that ever since his performance in SC2 started to drop. He had one year with a lot of second places in SC2, but from there it just became a long line of hopes getting upped and then him losing. Except that one tournament in USA he won. He's always been a winner, but when he didn't win anymore, it seemed to take it's toll. Which he also talks about in the interview.

A lot of people, including the pros have pointed this out. To have a true revival, you need young blood. I don't know what needs to be done to get that. Sponsored teams were what we had before. It was a way to at least have some kind of career track; keep a roof over your head and 3 meals a day while having access to resources to improve your game.

It took one man to do that and he single handedly brought brood war back on TV ( even if only for a time). And even though sonic is gone now, Afreeca and Kongdoo have taken up the torch. Fear not, others will rise in place of TBLS. The studio has been packed for almost every group this season, and flash even said that he won't do his military service until everyone else is back. BW was effectively dead for me after the transition to sc2. I tried watching the few players who stayed with bw but it just wasnt the same. The level of competition fell off a cliff. BW was only revived after enough pros quit sc2 and went back to bw. The issue is not the loss of current players but that there is no one to replace them. Name me a rookie since the end of the kespa era who has "made it". There is no one. Every player in this ASL I have heard of because they were the same players back then, its just the rankings between the players that have changed. I'm not saying it will completely die. But having only a fraction of the current popularity and level of play is imo like having nothing at all. I dont want the greatest spectator sport in the world to be relegated to such a niche state.

There is currently no system to effectively encourage and nurture new talent to enter the professional scene; and b.) No bw players = no bw scene Again I am not saying that a.) will not be resolved. Even if you pick 12 random guys out of those who made it into the ro24 and sent them to the miliatry, there'd still be more than enough top players. I do agree that fresh blood would be great. But I think there are enough players, especially those who already finished their military service, that we'll have a constant stream of good games.

What drives any e-sport is one old-guard being replaced by talented new blood, if the old guard just retire because of age and illness rather than competition that would be concerning. I just hope with streaming and income from twitch and afreeca, there is enough room for a new generation of BW pros. However, I don't think we'll see a lot of players of Jaedong's calibre ever again.

Just realized JDs last game before the end of broodwar in 2012 was a loss to Rain.

and snow, and now it is last (Ssak? O.o), soulkey and rain. Jeadong would have won with any protoss player with things he did, Rain has made absolutely inasane hold in my opinion, no zerg would beat him on this day, on this map. I can empathize with JD, I was playing piano whole my life, and since few months I can't play it because of nails disease, it hurts so much I can't play so I stopped playing, I think that health is more important than making people happy with Your performance, please stop playing, it was good run, there is no comeback in game of life. (or play one game daily, the most important is running game in head I think, I don't play only hardest parts on piano, I am amble to play soft parts) Best regards.

We will always have all of those amazing games to watch too. They will never go away. If it's time for Jaedong to quit because of his health so be it, I'd say it's also a time to be happy about, and to celebrate one of the most amazing careers in Starcraft.

There's a video on youtube that shows Bisu looking at his military enlistment date as being in 2015. Think he got out not too long ago. Would have linked the vid but don't want to get too off topic. Super sad about Jaedong, but at some point the pain just becomes insurmountable and interferes with your ability to perform and practice. I wonder if it'll interfere with his military service or if there is some niche role in the military that former pro gamers fulfill because of their similar wrist injuries. No way you can fire a gun with fucked up dead wrists, right?

To me Jaedong is competitive StarCraft. He represents everything I ever wanted to be in a player: how I played, how I thought about and saw the game, what skills I prioritized. And outside of the game he possessed qualities I yearned to possess as a person: humility, drive, passion, and an indomitable will. It's a strange mix of feelings that are welling up in me thinking about Jaedong entering the military and retiring for good. Something akin to mourning. Nostalgia? Not quite. Regret, and a deep and overwhelming sadness. Maybe I'm harboring a small shred of the emotions that must be running through him right now. I know that to me, and many others, Jaedong will always be the greatest player that StarCraft has ever produced. His retirement will mark the close of a chapter in both his life and mine. I wish him all the best.

2. It's life. 3. I don't understand progamers who think that they will be progamers forever. 4. I don't understand fans who think that their favourite player will play forever. I'm not a sportsman but i have health problems too. And if you have it, you should work on it. Your health is not magic, it depends on the laws of nature. Every of us have a time when you think that you are invulnerable. But this can't last forever. Reality knocks on you door and you should do something with it. That's how you understand the life.
