Hello,

I'd really like to play this on linux. Does anyone have positive experience with testing this?

I tried running it within Windows XP 64bit using VirtualBox on Fedora 25. The Launcher installs the game, but when trying to start 'StarCraft.exe' nothing happens.

Also, each time I start the Launcher it tells me there is an update available, so maybe the update is not applied correctly?

I have tried StarEdit and this works flawlessly.

Maybe it has something to do with new OpenGL requirements?

I've never had a smooth experience due to mouse lag. There is a reason windows exist after all.

brood war 1.16 works pretty fine under wine but you can't fix aspect ratio so you need to have an old monitor (you probably can but i couldn't figure it out with nvidia drivers even after following many howto on different forum). mouse is a bit laggy but playable (i did play an entire iccup season with that settings)

However 1.18 doesn't even work on wine. Bad news it is not working on virtualbox either (at least mine) I get an error with opengl on startup. I wonder if they will bother making a linux compatible version one day, that would be great and i could throw away this windows garbage once and for all.

I think that Windows XP virtual machines won't support 1.18 since they have changed the version of OpenGL that the game runs on (so might need 7). DirectX 9 support is apparently coming, though that doesn't really help Wine users.

Implementing DirectX9 Support
This is going to take a minute... but will resolve many of our compatibility issues with low spec machines. We will have a PTR build for testing in the coming weeks as it is ready.

While I do not like using Windows at all, I don't think there is a leeway to run SCBW on Linux as smoothly as on Windows native. I have yet tried 1.18, but even 1.16 was not playable due to a severe mouse lag. Of course, my laptop is not a decent spec laptop, but it is more than enough to run SCBW.

I'm sorry you might want to consider installing Windows... I'm using MacBook Pro after 1.18 tho.

I have tried this and managed to install starcraft 1.18. Unfortunately it crashes each time I attack an enemy. Something to do with 'special effects' ?

I had the exact same problem when I first tried it too. But it was updated again yesterday, and I haven't had any problems since. Are you using the latest version?

Update Wine/Lutris. I'm using Lutris with the 'wine-starcraft x86_64' profile in WIndows XP mode.

I can confirm 1.18.3 starts when using Lutris (and wine starcraft-2.6-x86_64 runner). But I'm not able to connect to Battle.net. On the 'Select Connection' screen when 'Online / Battle.net' is selected, it just says "Connecting..." and nothing happens. I don't see the gateway list. Any tips?

Windows 10, 8.1, and 7 are supported for online play. Due to a TLS security hole, XP and Vista are only supported for campaign and LAN

I don't think they can use XP mode anymore for Wine for multiplayer. Going to have to wait a bit until they figure out a workaround. I'll try it out myself in a bit and let you know if anything changes.

It takes some time because blizzard took the lazy route, all the new menu elements are html/javascript running via a modified embedded chrome... I have been looking at improving things using the wine-starcraft as base.

You can still use XP mode in 1.18.3, I just did a few minutes ago when I recorded the above video. The TSL issue is just laziness, they could have used OpenSSL.

Edit: installing winhttp and/or wininet with winetricks really improved the loading times for the new bnet elements.

Ok, good to know. Kinda figured it was laziness haha. Thanks for the video. Good luck with the improvements.

It's not that I'm impatient... I waited for a minute. My issue is not like yours, I have a dialog in center stating "Connecting..." and the gateway list never appears. It's like SC is not able to connect to the Battle.net servers. But it's not a firewall issue, I'm running it with Wine using the prepared runner from Lutris. Do I need to install / configure anything in Linux?

The thing is, I start it by double clicking on it in the Lutris client. So there is no terminal with logs. Do you know by any chance which file are the logs directed to?

To be able to provide you the logs gave me the idea to launch this manually, using the wine executable from the Lutris runner, and passing StarCraft.exe to it (both with full paths). And voila, SC started, and I could login to Battle.net. It would be still nice to be able to launch from Lutris client and have it fully functional.

Ok, meanwhile I figured how to have a terminal even if started from Lutris client.

Doesnt help me much, the wine warning messages are disabled. Not sure how to unable them on lutris, those are messages from the embedded chrome that draws the new bnet elements and it says a lot of uninteresting things.

It's ok, I just created a shell script that starts SC using the runner's wine executable from Lutris, and this way it's fully functional and everything work flawlessly. I don't even have those "lags" in your recording. Thanks for checking it though.

Damn, I take back that "flawlessly" part. Playing on Battle.net, SC randomly gets frozen during games. Very annoying. Sometimes I can play a game, but more often it freezes, and I have to close it (kill it). Anyone know what might be the issue or what can I do to prevent it?

The last log lines were theres (most likely only the last is relevant, the others were there before the freeze):

I can play with WINE, but only single player, I do not have gateways when I install from installer. I'm using Winsows XP in winecfg and Hide WINE version is enabled.

I just want to say that I got it working using the above mentioned Lutris runner. My previous attempt was to simply use Lutris runner to start Starcraft, which resulted in fully functioning, but freezing occasionally (actually during like 2/3 of my games).

What I changed is that I supplied WINEPREFIX and WINEARCH environment variables before starting Starcraft, and since then I had no problems wnatsoever.

An example how I start StarCraft. Put this into a script (e.g. scbw.sh), obviously use your folder names:

WINEPREFIX=/home/joe/Games/starcraft-anthology WINEARCH=win32 \
/home/joe/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/starcraft-2.6-x86_64/bin/wine \
/home/joe/Games/starcraft-anthology/drive_c/Program\ Files/StarCraft/StarCraft.exe

I'm getting just a Connecting... modal using Lutris, which is as far as I've ever gotten.

I had the same issue. Read my posts in this thread on how to make it work.

When I do it that way, I don't even HAVE a Connecting... because the OK button is grayed out

I basically get to the same point as I do running Wine manually (which is not surprising since I compiled the same version as the Lutris version)
