How to stack Mutas on Wraiths

Say you are a player commanding 6 mutas and 6 wraiths. Does anybody here know how to stack the mutas on TOP of the wraiths instead of the other way around.

You can stack any air unit as long as you have it grouped with any unit which is far away.

Does selection order make a difference?
If not, does the time at which the unit was built make a difference?

Has to do with the "magic box" distance, if you click with a selection of units outside of this area, the selected units will converge onto 1 point (where you clicked). If you click within this area, the units will retain their formation relative to one another. the units doesn't matter.

What I'm trying to do is get mutalisks on top of wraiths when I stack them. I don't believe it has anything to do with the order of selecting the units. The information about the magic box is nice. It shows how to stack, but not how to stack the mutalisks on top of the wraiths.

I think he wants to use 6 mutas and 6 wraiths in one control group and wants the mutas to appear on top. He probably wants to substitute 1 air unit for a stuck land unit to achieve the clumping effect. But the question still stands, how to get certain units to appear on top of the stack, while others are hidden?

How could 3 out of 5 people not get what he was asking?

I have no idea how it works, I think it has something to do with what unit was built earlier, like Kau assumed...
In my test just now, I could stack mutas on top of certain wraiths, and I think it worked when I build the muta earlier... but there were weird exceptions to this rule, mutas or wraiths that would just stack on top of any unit that I built earlier...

Another thing I thought of was the individual unit rank, but that wasn't it. Then I thought it might be the position in the 12-unit-selection... didn't test everything there, but I don't think it matters. The unit that stacks on top is on top always it seems, no matter if they're in a shared selection or not...

I hope this isn't some obvious thing that's embarassing to not have thought of when someone enlightens us...

Thanks, there is this one WWII map I play on iccup which when I played with koreans they actually are able to stack mutas on top.

I haven't found any way to replicate it consistently but I've noticed there tends to be units that differ in their flying "height".

Isn't the unit with the lower y position considered to be on top? That's at least how sprites are normally rendered.

If two units actually stack perfectly (i.e. pixel-perfect same position) it probably is their position in the unit list which makes a difference (I think it's a linked list, so it probably is determined by spawn order).

The other question to add to this is = is it the top muta/wraith that gets auto-attacked first, always? Assuming perfect stack. Obviously it is useful to have muta on top for anti-targeting purposes I guess, but this is an interesting corollary.

Did some actual testing on this, and turns out to be very straight forward: With stacked air units, the one with the lowest unit ID will always be displayed on top (i.e. units will be stacked in order of their unit ID, lowest one on top.
To make this work, the Larva that is to be morphed into the Mutalisk therefore needs to have spawned before the Wraith finishes (haven't tried this last bit out in detail, but this is basically what you should try).

Does this have some practical applications? Like does right click attack not usually prioritize the unit on top?
