They speak english well enough,

They barely speak any English. That is the strongest point Fish has.

1) vast majority don't

2) matchmaking is not a magic wand, there are also benefits lobby systems have over it.
also if there are very few players in a server matchmaking won't change anything, instead of spending 10 minutes staring at the lobby, you will just be spending 10 minutes staring at the "finding opponent" screen.

3) its just a one time process if you are not a massive smurfer.

4) regular players already play BW without issue, thats why they are regulars. next BW patch will most likely also fix the technical stuff so other servers also gets it.

5) you vastly underestimate this factor. fish server has already been around for 10 years and going, people go there not just to play games but to hang around in chat channels for various stuff, meet with old friends etc..outside of fish server shutting down or doing something extremely stupid, koreans are not going to mass migrate just for a new fancy foreign server.

also on fish server with a good connection you can easily find and start a game within 5-10 seconds unlike iccup

i predict that this server would be popular for 2v2/3v3 instead (if devs come around to implement team game matchmaking and market it).

If you want it to replace fish then you need to make it more appealing to Koreans. Which may trigger the fish guys to DDoS it to oblivion.
I dont see how it isnt already more appealing to koreans. The established player base will be a factor for a Korean to choose to continue to use Fish over ShieldBattery. Think of why many people and businesses choose to use Windows over other operating systems.

Not really seeing the validity of the analogy. It costs money and time to make programs functional for windows, and effort for people to learn new OS, it takes neither for switching a server.

They dont speak english well enough to figure out where the join button is, etc? Every literate person on the planet speaks english well enough to navigate the consistent UI system of broodwar. People dont like having alts? There will be no ability to host private games for the sake of repeat gaming? Sheildbattery wont have lobbys? As to the friend bit: thats the inertia I spoke of.

Koreans might start playing on this serv for like 1 year until they make their own version of it. Just like they made their own version of iccup and their own version of launchers etc. They just copy everything like japanese cars copying from german cars lol

I think that statement lacks the context of actual history Korea has had popular private servers since long before the foreign scene (Game-i and such were popular while the foreign scene was pretty much all using WGTour).

We do plan to more directly support the Korean community with proper translations (and some better thinking around how to best support play between people that might not speak the same language, although I think automating matchmaking will help a lot with that), but its not at the top of our priorities at the moment. My major priority currently is getting a system that works extremely well for people I can easily communicate with and get feedback from (which is mainly the foreign scene). Once we have that in place, I very much expect that such a thing will be appealing to non-English speakers as well, and we'll have more time to focus on making the experience great for them as well and do more outreach to their communities.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and patience. I was working on this every day before the announcement, and I've been working on it every day since. I promise it will be worth the wait

This is the real. But the question is, are people willing to move from fish to shield battery?

i dont care if the koreans don't move. as long as SB delivers it will have a solid english speaking playerbase and that is enough for me.

but the question is...can SB really deliver matchmaking, no bullshit hosting, etc.

By the way, I had an idea the other day..

With matchmaking, I'm afraid that what you'll see pretty often is, getting a match, and then after seeing the enemy, people will leave so you have to queue up again.

Why not have a matchmaking (or an alternative match making together with the regular one)
where you cannot know the nickname or stats of your enemy until the match is over?

might also help attract some koreans this way, cause I bet there are quite a bit that would like this feature
I don't believe you.

If the server can get a bunch of westerners playing and smooth out play issues substantially, it'll be a success. It's designed to address all the main issues plaguing ICCUP: lobby matchmaking, hosting issues, and even the software(/hardware?) compatibility issues. There's a sizeable cohort of people who would like to play Broodwar but don't for one of the reasons above. For me, it's lobby matchmaking and hosting issues, which together make finding a single game a serious ordeal.

Koreans shouldn't be the goal. It's perfectly possible to have a great server without a single Korean. If there's a real concern about population, then let's try to get more people playing Broodwar, in the same fashion as Melee has been revitalized recently.

It's going to be awhile. Be patient man! No need to try and rush them, when it's done they will let us know!

Yeah, wasn't there uproar because it was projected that public release would take place after months?
