hi guys.
i know there have been tons of threads on this topic, i read a lot of them using the search function. unfortunately none of them gave me an answer so after 2 hours of trying i decided to make a thread myself.

i can read/write korean in windows just fine, i can also read/write korean on b.net fine, but i can't read/write korean INGAME. characters will show up as gibberish.

there used to be a program called hanstar which enabled korean language ingame, it's not working anymore though, since blizzard implemented full korean language supported with patch 1.12 (thats what i read).

so does anyone know what i am doing wrong?
i am using the english SC/BW version and german winXP. (maybe thats a problem?)
any help would be appreciated~

You need to switch between languages ingame. This is done using the default windows hotkey of "left alt + shift." When you are switched to Korean, you must then toggle between Korean and English. To do this you hit the "right alt" key. When you are in Korean language, the right "control key" no long works for hotkeying stuff.

but characters will show up as gibberish when playing an actual game.

Under Control Panel/Regional settings make sure you have both Standards and Formats and Location as Korea/Korean. This is under the Regional Options tab.

hmm I'm in the same position as you. Korean works fine when I'm on channels, but not in game

Ok what I just said is the solution...cause when I have them checked it works in game and when it's unchecked it doesnt.

after changing standards and formats to korea, it works!
thanks a lot DarK]N[exuS!

some stuff in windows is in korean now though, like the clock.
but i guess i can live with that.
maybe i'll just change it when i want to play SC, there is no reboot required when changing.

edit: it will still work if you customize standards/formats to your liking (i changed it back to the 24h system and DD/MM/YYYY format, since that what we use in germany), as long as there is "Korea" selected under standards/formats. the "location" setting doesn't matter apparently. (changed it back to germany, still works)

the location setting will only get you:

korean games
when you enter b.net you'll spawn at a brood war kor-# channel

Same solution. Switch to Linux or switch your computer to Korean defaults in country settings.

You have to do 3 things in order to have full korean support in bw. Install support for east-asian languages, set unicode to korean, and set regional settings to korean.

i spawn at a brood war kor-# channel and see korean games although my location setting is NOT korea
i believe the location setting does nothing (for starcraft)

I never tried.. but in theory if you use microsoft program called "applocale"
which allows you to run games in different unicode(different language without you changing windows default unicode).
install it and find ur starcraft.exe set it under korean unicode.

reading korean font in chatting room/internet is not a problem for most of people.. its just that if your window is english unicode.. you wont be able to see different language in 'program/applications'.
but applocale allows you to run program/application(in this case.. starcraft) in different language unicode.

Hope this helped. If you want to see korean fonts in-game without all these trouble.. then you need to change your windows unicode setting to korean.(which may cause unstable for your windows unless you already installed in korean unicode)

Location setting is where you spawn at kor-# channel. Although if you change location setting.. you will be able to see korean games better.(more list then usual)

Many koreans uses this method to run 'bot' using applocale. Since korean unicode does not support some codes that are made in bot.. they simply just use applocale to change unicode for certain program/application(bot).

win7

go to region and language in control panel
under "formats" tab make sure "korean (korea)" is selected in language drop down menu

under "administrative" tab
"korean (korea)" is selected for "language for non-unicode programs"

restart comp
