Hello TLers... I need your help badly today!
First of all I'm known for most of you as MYM.Raven (to make it clear because my tl.net id doesnt say it). As you may know I took 2nd place in WCG Poland offline finals this year but we have only one slot sponsored by our local organisers so it would be Draco sent by them to Monza.
But we all know many countries made exceptions for players finishing as #2.. #3 or even #4 so they could move to World Cyber Games Grand Finals for their own money and still participate in tourney. This is all about local organisers contacting with global one to make it done.
So I contacted polish WCG organisers about the case - if they could make an exception for me aswell because I've got sponsorship and I'm able to pay my trip. It seems I will get a chance if I send them proofs / sources about other countries in last years about players being sent to WCG GF for their own money. I dont have that much time to do it - guy who I was talking to said it would be nice if I can send sources... today.
So here I am asking you all for help. I need urls to news about the exceptions or mail messages from local orgas. Post it here and/or send to mpolak@inpoland.pl. I'm doing my best to find those sources aswell. I hope you can help me anyhow and I will be very glad if you do.
Theres a big chance to see two Starcraft players from Poland in Monza and its my personal dream to come over there and represent our country Help me to make it true!
Best regards!
/Maciej "Raven" Polak

I know about some exceptions already - Czech 2005 (2 players)... Holland 2004 (4 players! - Strafe Nazgul Twisted and someone else)... Australia 2002 (Razor) 2003 (Starhunter) and 2004 (Razor again). If we could get links about newses or local organisers confirmations anyhow?

OMG Help him pls! I want to see Raven in Monza!
|
WCG 2004 Canada (2 spots) Giyom placed 3rd. But Samsung pays his way in despite him having a terrible flu.
It is perfectly acceptable and allowed and has been for years. Holland 2004 -> The entire Holland team paid I think. Even 4th place, Tuzer.
|
Hi!
NLD A leader here (InC)Desire). Though I didn't go to the WCG, I do know the players payed for their own trip in order to be able to go (one guy didnt want to pay/couldnt go so the nr 5 was able to take his spot and pay).
Some of our players managed to make our national organisers to agree with this (a guy named Bennie), after which he took care of the rest with the global organisers.
A little difference with how it is now is that back then the local organisers only had to pay for the flight, now they also have to pay for hotel, etc. However this shouldn't be a problem, it would only mean you have to pay more (about twice the amount I can imagine...).
Hope it's still in time, act fast, good luck!

raven for the gold !!! i hope u will get to go to monza

yeah they let giyom go
but thats because WCG needs the most famous player to be there
i don't think this should be very much trouble for you unless the poland orgas/wcg admins simply don't care or are assholes

i am the turkey a leader and dont forget and many times player gone with sponsors to wcg one little example in 2003 the famous ex progamer Grrr became 3rd in wcg canada but that year canada had only 2 spots so grrr couldnt go to wcg but he finded some sponsors gone to wcg to korea and became bronze in the grand final
just wanted to remember
and 96)Bman the leader of the australian a team tells ( he cant post here couldt get an account)
"Starhunter placed 4th in national final - 2nd place forfeited ticket, so Starhunter paid his own way there
and
Razor finished 5th in 2004 - Paid his own way to WCG as 2nd forfeited ticket again"

Hmm way back when I wasn't so keenly following SC, a friend of mine at my (former) uni kept telling me he was best best friends with starhunter.
Small world, haven't really heard much of that ID since I left that uni.
Never knew he went to WCG O_O

Starhunter did pay his own way in 2003, and is still partially active on US-West AUS-1. You can ask him directly by making an account at teamaus.org and creating a thread. Nick (Starhunter) is a nice guy, I'm sure he would help, tell him 0bLiTeRaTiOn sent u.

edit: important--guys, actually read please:
Raven said he knew about others, but he needs credible sources (e.g. news organizations or WCG pages) to back up his claim. That means we need links here, not information of players. So maybe look up the results of previous national WCG qualifiers plus who they say they're sending from the national page and then the lists of WCG player rosters for the grand final event?
That way, you'd show that there are players from countries that weren't sponsored. I'd do this, but my Google skills are not many (who again was it that found the TL.net banner picture, again?) and I have class in 10 minutes.
Which countries have the best national WCG sites? I figure the best-run ones would have documentation from the previous years. Either that, or you could find a news article, which I'd think would be harder.

there you are, the case of Sephiroth (Chile), WCG 2003.
It's in spanish, I can translate it:
To seul: Three youngs will be the lucky ones, after showing his skills in videogames, the ones who will travel to the on-line world tournament.
Andrés Herrada (Chile, aka Keir), Rodrigo Bustos, Patrick Villagrán, become the best 3 online players and they were selected to the big final in Seul, South Corea, in October, the wednesday and thusday 08 and 09.
The three winners compited in his own disciples: Starcraft: Broodwar, Warcraft 3 and FIFA Soccer 2003. Each one of them got the 1st plaze in his category taking the national cup WCG Chile 2003, tournament that also was played in the citys of Antofagasta, Copiapó, Viña del Mar, Linares, Temuco and Punta Arenas.
This give them the right to represent Chile in the world tournament WCG 2003 in South Corea, were 55 countrys and more than 600 thousand players participate. This is the important think, but it's just a comentary. But you can corroborate Sephiroth did participate in WCG 2003 in worldcybergames.com I think.
DANILUX, ARAUCO (2003-09-17) IT'S IMPORTANT TO SAY A COMMENT IN DEEP OVER THE BROTHERS LIVED IN SC, THE ONE WHO FINALLY WIN WAS KEIR, SITUATION THAT APPARENTLY DOESN'T LIKED TO THEIR PARENTS, THAT DECIDED TO COST THE TRIP OF THE OTHER SON, "SEPHIROTH", SO CHILE WILL HAVE 4 PARTICIPANTS IN THIS BIG TOURNAMENT.
I know maybe the info doesn't be enough, but it's an old situation, and I'ts hard to find another source. Hope you make it Raven.
|
Yes Razor in 2004 and Starhunter in 2002 paid their way to the wcg finals.
|
Well like you said we paid for our own trip in 2004. I don't have contact information anymore so not sure if this helps. However a clear distinction with your case is that for us it was known in advance. I think the spots need to be reserved beforehand or atleast a long enough time before a certain WCG deadline. Some local WCGs are held before this deadline so they can simply adjust after they know their top 4, but other local WCGs are after this deadline so they must have the amount o their spots confirmed.
When we went we only had to pay for our plane ticket. This will not be so expensive for you this year, but I think there are alot of additional costs now including hotel and also a fee per player possibly. Keep this in mind.
Hope things work out for you.
|
Re hi. First of all - thanks a lot for your support and so fast feedback!
I'm after hours of conversations to our WCG organiser. Now I can only wait to see if they can get global organiser about adding new player. I hope it wouldnt be a problem if theres still more and more offline finals and participants list for Monza GF could still change.
We shall see!

What I wrote to zir_green:
Hey, about your question:
We knew the organizer of Dutch WCG in person, so it was an agreement based only on trust on both sides of that agreement.
The organizer made sure we got 4 spots for WCG (which we promised to pay for, this wouldn't be possible if we didn't know the organizer, because we can't just promise someone we don't know amount euro's), and we just made sure we qualified. After the Dutch WCG we paid our tickets by bank transfer and that's all.
It doesn't have to do with the international WCG orga, Raven has to make some kind of deal with the Polish WCG orga, but it's probably not possible anymore because the Polish orga already reserved 1 spot for BW and it's probably not possible to reserve another. There's a time limit for reserving spots. If he adressed this to the Polish organization way before the Polish WCG, it might have been possible. Now it's probably futile to try, but if he wants to try, he probably has to take it up with the Polish orga.
Greets, Twisted.
----------------------------------------- Original Message: hi twisted u dont remember me maybe but i asked u how to go to SF
now raven wants to do the same think he needs an example to show for the wcg poland organisators
can u help my msn is *****@*****.com ***********@********.com < raven
So basically the same stuff that Nazgul said.
Edited out some possible confidential stuff. Anyway, as for proof.. well I don't know if this is enough, but I don't have much else except for what's in here :p I didn't see this topic before I wrote the PM so I didn't know that it was still possible.

I think the polish community is quite willing to help sponser him too. I might even be willing to help out a bit.

twisted thanks for your answer . i hope raven can go. he really deserves to go . i think now its the time to verdict for the polish organisators . to not send a such powerful gamer would be a wastage . good luck

From this year, only "Korean" wcg staff can do such thing like that. The system of wcg has totally changed in this year, well not totally I meant, Korea only do every work now. So even if you ask/send to polish wcg people, they prob have to contact Korean staff also. The best way to participate in this year wcg is that you might want to send e-mail direct to Korean wcg staff. I'm at the library right now (suppose to study but reading tl.net lol...), when i get back to home i will pm you the Korean wcg organization unless you know already.
|
hope u can do it raven... never stop chasing your dreams.. they keep us alive and i like your style too :D gogogogo

@Nal_CrayOn - I will be glad if you can find it for me. I found some e-mail but I'm not sure if its correct one.
Thanks again for your support, mates

For Slovakia one spot cost 30 000 svk krouns= 750Euro ... we were told... the most expensive is the spot itself...

the gamer was called tuig not tuzer.
Tuzer is french~

Didn't sweden norway and finland, asked their players for a wcg fee to pay the trip? ;o.

I wish you the best Raven!

@FalliNinLove - is it for both spot and travel? Before our finals we were asking and they said ~1500Euro to send one player.

Hmm it was 1500 euro last year when it was in Singapore, but a plane ticket to Singapore probably covers at least half of it. For Italy it's probably around 1000 euro for us (which includes travel, accomodation and tournament I guess).
|
750Euro for everything... And to Singapour it was like 1750Euro
|
And for spectator, no playin: 90Euro-> Travel from CZE, Accommodation, ticket to wCG.. bio. clan is organizing this
|
you definitely deserve to go raven, sorry i could be of no assistance but im sure they will let you participate.
|
A flight from Germany to Monza/Milano does cost around $75-$125 (more fore first class etc) for a roundtrip, same prizes will go to Poland I assume, shouldnt be more expensive. If you share your hotelroom with friends its less than $250 or something a week, breakfast included mostly. The prizes for hotel and such stuff are actually not high, its pretty cheap if you are not booking on a 5* hotelroom. Then you will need around $100-$200 for food, bus and such things. I think you will be fine with ~$500 (+,-$100) + the prize for WCG spot, no clue how much that does cost. But money shouldn't be the main problem I guess mym
|
Hard to find cheap hotels in Milan, I've looked and can't find any ^_^;;
Who's going to WCG this year as a spectator?
I am ^^

Ok... so I'm just after another conversation to polish WCG orgas. They sent e-mail to Europe WCG coordinator with a question if they could add another player to WCG Poland roster. I asked some questions to get details about what could be main problem over here. It seems to reserve hostel/plane ticket isnt a big deal, especially with Draco flying from South Korea, not Poland, and probably residing in different hostel (so virtually I could just use ticket/ hostel room he received for winning polish WCG). And theres no specific deadline to add new players. The problem is, this Europe WCG coordinator they were talking to before (like 1 month ago) and then he said he is not sure if its ok to let players go for their own money, because its not fair for the players who have not cash for it, etc.
At the other hand we know they made those exceptions so many times. Thats why our orgas asked me to send sources about sending players from other countries for their own $. They said, Europe coordinator should answer today about my case.
During conversation I've got an idea I could contact directly global orgas of WCG (korean ICM maybe?) to ask if its ok to play in GF being #2 and having own sponsors. Such a confirmation should help BADLY to get Europe coordinator let me go to Monza. Polish orga I was talking to agreed with me and said I should try to get such a confirmation if I have a chance to (it seems he has no idea how to contact global orgas, because everytime he had any questions about WCG he just contacted Europe coordinator).
Well, I'm not sure which contact I should try. I've found some e-mail / phones to International Cyber Marketing, korean company being main orgas of WCG, but maybe someone knows direct contact e-mail / phone to orga who is responsible for decissions like that?
CrayOn said he got some contacts but I didnt get any PM yet. Maybe some WCG referees from last years know right persons to talk to?
Once again, asking for help, thanks in forward, I will be glad if you can support me in my quest for Monza

It's great that Raven tries to make it and I'm on his side but there's some kind of reflection which always comes to my mind in such cases... I mean - mYm supported Suncow and Draco when they tried to go to Korea, now they will (probably?) support Raven. And who supports mYm? They can't even get decent lineup vs ToT... I am not trying to offend anyone - I just try to say how weird it is and how sad I am about it. Don't players feel that they have a debt? Do they REALLY cannot play or they just find excuses?

yeah, it's pretty ridiculous in most cases, it shows that people who play online games still don't threat it as a sport and in general are pretty immature and irresponsible about things =)

well you can't say that they're irresponsible.. all the polish had wcgs that time and we weren't allowed to postpone the games.. there's nothing much we can do bout it

about this monza trip price. as i remember from polish forums, some1 said - i belive it was Cyru - that such trip will cos around 6000 zlotys' it's about 1500 euro. in that case i have no idea why would trip from poland to menza and from netherlands to singapoure cost the same :F anyway i wish raven good luck
|
1500 to Milan from Poland? No more than £300.....
|
@Leggionaire - well we contacted our local orgas about the case way before WCG (as we do every year but our orgas always too sleepy/lazy to get it done).. now I just contacted differenct guy from this company.
And well... it seems I have got news from ICM few minutes ago...
I GO TO MONZA!
Thanks again to all you who helped me gathering proofs about previous exceptions!

Raven this year i also tried to go Italy, had sponsors who accepted to pay some money for me, but organizers in Ukraine asked 2500 euro for accepting me. Any my ideas like going alone, paying for food and living by myself to sum lower were refused. I dunno may be in Poland orga takes care more about their players, but in Ukraine there is such situation.....
