Hello TLers... I need your help badly today!
First of all I'm known for most of you as MYM.Raven (to make it clear because my tl.net id doesnt say it). As you may know I took 2nd place in WCG Poland offline finals this year but we have only one slot sponsored by our local organisers so it would be Draco sent by them to Monza.
But we all know many countries made exceptions for players finishing as #2.. #3 or even #4 so they could move to World Cyber Games Grand Finals for their own money and still participate in tourney. This is all about local organisers contacting with global one to make it done.
So I contacted polish WCG organisers about the case - if they could make an exception for me aswell because I've got sponsorship and I'm able to pay my trip. It seems I will get a chance if I send them proofs / sources about other countries in last years about players being sent to WCG GF for their own money. I dont have that much time to do it - guy who I was talking to said it would be nice if I can send sources... today.
So here I am asking you all for help. I need urls to news about the exceptions or mail messages from local orgas. Post it here and/or send to mpolak@inpoland.pl. I'm doing my best to find those sources aswell. I hope you can help me anyhow and I will be very glad if you do.
Theres a big chance to see two Starcraft players from Poland in Monza and its my personal dream to come over there and represent our country Help me to make it true!
Best regards!
/Maciej "Raven" Polak

I know about some exceptions already - Czech 2005 (2 players)... Holland 2004 (4 players! - Strafe Nazgul Twisted and someone else)... Australia 2002 (Razor) 2003 (Starhunter) and 2004 (Razor again). If we could get links about newses or local organisers confirmations anyhow?

OMG Help him pls! I want to see Raven in Monza!

WCG 2004 Canada (2 spots) Giyom placed 3rd. But Samsung pays his way in despite him having a terrible flu.
It is perfectly acceptable and allowed and has been for years. Holland 2004 -> The entire Holland team paid I think. Even 4th place, Tuzer.

Hi!
NLD A leader here (InC)Desire). Though I didn't go to the WCG, I do know the players payed for their own trip in order to be able to go (one guy didnt want to pay/couldnt go so the nr 5 was able to take his spot and pay).
Some of our players managed to make our national organisers to agree with this (a guy named Bennie), after which he took care of the rest with the global organisers.
A little difference with how it is now is that back then the local organisers only had to pay for the flight, now they also have to pay for hotel, etc. However this shouldn't be a problem, it would only mean you have to pay more (about twice the amount I can imagine...).
Hope it's still in time, act fast, good luck!

yeah they let giyom go
but thats because WCG needs the most famous player to be there
i don't think this should be very much trouble for you unless the poland orgas/wcg admins simply don't care or are assholes

Hmm way back when I wasn't so keenly following SC, a friend of mine at my (former) uni kept telling me he was best best friends with starhunter.
Small world, haven't really heard much of that ID since I left that uni.
Never knew he went to WCG O_O

Starhunter did pay his own way in 2003, and is still partially active on US-West AUS-1. You can ask him directly by making an account at teamaus.org and creating a thread. Nick (Starhunter) is a nice guy, I'm sure he would help, tell him 0bLiTeRaTiOn sent u.

edit: important--guys, actually read please:
Raven said he knew about others, but he needs credible sources (e.g. news organizations or WCG pages) to back up his claim. That means we need links here, not information of players. So maybe look up the results of previous national WCG qualifiers plus who they say they're sending from the national page and then the lists of WCG player rosters for the grand final event?
That way, you'd show that there are players from countries that weren't sponsored. I'd do this, but my Google skills are not many (who again was it that found the TL.net banner picture, again?) and I have class in 10 minutes.
Which countries have the best national WCG sites? I figure the best-run ones would have documentation from the previous years. Either that, or you could find a news article, which I'd think would be harder.

there you are, the case of Sephiroth (Chile), WCG 2003.
It's in spanish, I can translate it:
To seul: Three youngs will be the lucky ones, after showing his skills in videogames, the ones who will travel to the on-line world tournament.
Andrés Herrada (Chile, aka Keir), Rodrigo Bustos, Patrick Villagrán, become the best 3 online players and they were selected to the big final in Seul, South Corea, in October, the wednesday and thusday 08 and 09.
The three winners compited in his own disciples: Starcraft: Broodwar, Warcraft 3 and FIFA Soccer 2003. Each one of them got the 1st plaze in his category taking the national cup WCG Chile 2003, tournament that also was played in the citys of Antofagasta, Copiapó, Viña del Mar, Linares, Temuco and Punta Arenas.
This give them the right to represent Chile in the world tournament WCG 2003 in South Corea, were 55 countrys and more than 600 thousand players participate. This is the important think, but it's just a comentary. But you can corroborate Sephiroth did participate in WCG 2003 in worldcybergames.com I think.
DANILUX, ARAUCO (2003-09-17) IT'S IMPORTANT TO SAY A COMMENT IN DEEP OVER THE BROTHERS LIVED IN SC, THE ONE WHO FINALLY WIN WAS KEIR, SITUATION THAT APPARENTLY DOESN'T LIKED TO THEIR PARENTS, THAT DECIDED TO COST THE TRIP OF THE OTHER SON, "SEPHIROTH", SO CHILE WILL HAVE 4 PARTICIPANTS IN THIS BIG TOURNAMENT.
I know maybe the info doesn't be enough, but it's an old situation, and I'ts hard to find another source. Hope you make it Raven.

Yes Razor in 2004 and Starhunter in 2002 paid their way to the wcg finals.

Well like you said we paid for our own trip in 2004. I don't have contact information anymore so not sure if this helps. However a clear distinction with your case is that for us it was known in advance. I think the spots need to be reserved beforehand or atleast a long enough time before a certain WCG deadline. Some local WCGs are held before this deadline so they can simply adjust after they know their top 4, but other local WCGs are after this deadline so they must have the amount o their spots confirmed.
When we went we only had to pay for our plane ticket. This will not be so expensive for you this year, but I think there are alot of additional costs now including hotel and also a fee per player possibly. Keep this in mind.
Hope things work out for you.

Re hi. First of all - thanks a lot for your support and so fast feedback!
I'm after hours of conversations to our WCG organiser. Now I can only wait to see if they can get global organiser about adding new player. I hope it wouldnt be a problem if theres still more and more offline finals and participants list for Monza GF could still change.
We shall see!
