If you wanted to be true to the original you'd have to go a little more into the cartoony than the realism of their 1-inch actors or whatever they called them. They'd also have to stop evaluating the sounds so much, such as "Why do hydralisks shooting spines sound like goop?" I personally enjoyed both the cartooniness of WC and BW, but also the "realism" (aliens are real, right?!) of SC2. Mostly up to preference I guess.

I agree too. Also, I'm sure they can use sprite animation if they really wanted to..

The reason why SC2 is so terrible to watch as a spectator sport is not only because of the mundane death balls, but its the way the units push and slide against each other when they are bunched up, like they are all walking on ice. It makes it look very very unprofessional in terms of graphics and is a total turnoff when you are trying to pay attention to the action.

That's what I thought too, but at least the unit portraits could be made to look like they did in BW - 'realistic' images. The atmosphere created by the sound effects makes a huge difference. I miss the Overmind . The lighting would also make a world of difference...if everything wasn't so bright and shiny but instead more grim and dark, like BW and Diablo, it would feel very different.

I suppose we shouldn't be extending this conversation in this thread, but I'm not sure if this topic is thread-worthy.

EDIT: Thinking back, I realized that from the WoL campaign, the levels that felt the most interesting/intense were the ones on Char...which fit the bill of "grim and dark" pretty well.

The altitude of the camera is yet another factor....SC2's camera is way higher, which is why marines look like ants and seem to shoot very short distances, and why BW tanks appear to shoot farther.

Totally agree with this, I think alot of it is because in order to do really much of anything, you need a mass amount of units. Take for example, the zergling, in BW it could actually be a potential early game threat in terms of harassment, but in SC2 you need about 24 or more for them to really do anything useful. The little meaningful engagements are much fewer in SC2 which also means less micro oriented battles and more of " I'll smash my army together with your army and see what happens". I don't think I articulated that well but I hope people understand my point.
