Have Map, Will Battle.
Map makers have been far more influential to our community than many give them credit for. This is a short dissertation on map makers, their influence, and a few of the reasons to push of map diversity in the Starcraft competitive community. In a parallel and graphic manner I will show case the work of many map makers showing us new Terrain concepts that could be used to enhance the beauty of current and future pro-maps.
Map makers have been far more influential to our community than many give them credit for. Not always to the favor of us melee players but regardless they have put their mark in our game in ways that affect all us. Think only of BGH and fastest maps to understand this. They have also helped define pro-gaming with their balanced maps * and the concept of fair maps.
They have also added endless new concepts to our game indirectly by forcing us to make best of many map specifics. They are also the ones who have pulled us away from the Hunter and then the Temple hegemony that was suffocating us.

(continued at wgtour, it goes on for a while and has more screeshots) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I would publish the whole thing here but the editing of 11 sceenshots/pics is too much for me at present.
You can check the whole article at its source WGtour:

As always, your feed back will be greatly appreciated.

The Wgtour article has a few more.

Those screenshots look awesome. They don't belong in melee maps, but they're still cool looking
edit: holy shit:

:O!!!, awesome, great stuff

You can see the waterfall on #14 is made on LT, with a castle in the center of the minimap rather than the temple itself.
I wonder if it's playable. That would be sweet.

why aren't these "terrainers" making melee maps for us to play on?
i think there might be a problem with sprite limits though, like if the map has too many sprites and you get into late game you are like wow this map is pretty but my valkyries aren't firing T.T omg hax

Because like much of our community, each to his own bubble, also because no one has aksed them to do so ~ I will continue with method to work in the unification of all Starcraft communities.

hmm yes it just seems somewhat futile to make maps for the purpose of the maps existing
i guess it's just something cool to do... but yeah these terrains would rox0r the hizzousE!!!11!!!1one!11

omg this what i call true art sc 2 should be like this, but with same units like it is now that would be fuckin' unbeliavable!
|
Woah, those decorations are fucking unbelievable , and it was all done with the ol' trusty sc engine , makes anyone proud, heh?

The real name is "Flooded Gate". The marine is actually on a non water ramp if you look closely.
|
great work. plz 1 simple map to play to admire it ingame :D
|
Wow thats cool. Som of it might work in melee...
|
they could make some insanely sick RPGs with shit like this..it's too bad there probably isn't more than a handfull of good ums map makers left, if even that
|
I never thought starcraft could look so beautiful This stuff tops warcraft 3 graphics, simply because it's not only visually appealing, but it has a great sense of mood and atmosphere, which warcraft 3 imo doesn't, since the style is so cartoony.

actually, the saddest fact is that even the best melee map makers seem to be noobs in comparison to ums map makers. ums-mappers know a lot of tricks, which could be used in melee. for example it is possible to place buildings/units on maps in MELEE (NO USE MAP SETTINGS NEEDED!) (give them for player 12) -which allows more ways to 'block' things -instead of minerals you can place a supply depot etc, you can place command centers for zerg to infest and so on it is also possible to place sprites, which are like units, but cant be killed
you see some examples of sprites+square terrain, bigger ramps (known for a long time by ums map makers)
unfortunately ums mappers dont know much about melee and melee map makers refuse to check staredit.net just to learn some tricks

I wouldn't say they don't know about it. Look at Raid-Assault. There are extra-long ramps in that map. They probably only add features which are conducive to good gameplay.

When I still played ums maps, I saw some crazier stuff than this. I swear to god that I saw one map that had the actual start location icon on it (the target). Also, I saw units that had flickering blue on them, I saw buildings build on air, I saw untis walking on space, I saw creep with no colony, and a bunch of other shit I can't remember. It seems that these guys use that knowledge to make pretty maps, while the ums people use it to make... ums maps.
EDIT: Also, these f'ed up ramps would really change the game. However, have they found a hack to make ramps go "backwards"? That wouldn't change the game, it would just make map-making easier.

It's not a hack, they used a Terrain Placer =/

This is 1year or 1,5(?)old trick. I think it was known before starforge was created. I think it was possible to do with ISOM (or however it was called, which was much older)
The square terrain is interesting, so as the fake creep. It is possible to make (ums, not melee) maps which go with ~1,5speed and ~4speed etc
|
if its possible to add a ramp that goes backwards it should be done @9 at LT -.-
|
Wow! Hpw pretty, with waterfalls, beaches and stuff. I really hope someone makes some promap with these stuff!

Yes, I have Hunters x8, with everything sped up 8 times. However, Things won't attack unless you tell them to. Soemthing's wrong with the AI of the units.
Watching a speed uped Zergling zip through the map or a crackling attack is crazy x8. Replays make it even better :O

Ums map makers are gods compared to melee map design artis. But that would be really cool to see that in some melee maps
|
|
Perhaps, somebody could make a map that looks like these, but it still playable melee-wise and fairly balanced?
|
I absolutely love those waterfalls.

Wow, the article was confusingly written and I didn't understand much, but these little tricks are really really cool. Neato!
