As a fan who started watching broodwar through Flash, this momentous day makes my heart swell indeed. He set a new record for most titles in one year (EVER OSL beating Movie, HanaDaetoo MSL beating Jaedong, Bigfile MSL beating Jaedong, and this Korean Air OSL 2 beating Jaedong), beating iloveoov who had the record from 2004 (HanaFOS MSL, SPRIS MSL, EVER OSL).
He's had a crazy season - In PL - Leader in Season Wins, Season MVP, WL Gold, Finals Gold, Finals MVP; MSL Gold, and now OSL Gold (and he may very well win WCG as well).
He's the 1st player in history to reach both individual league finals 3 times in a row.
He's the 2nd player in history to win both individual leagues at the same time (after NaDa in 2002)
He's the 4th player in history to receive the Golden Mouse (after NaDa, July, and Jaedong).
If all goes well he will be the player who has earned the most (around 500,00,000 Won) in a year after sAviOr's record of 400,000,000 won in 05-06 season.
He's been labeled Bonjwa in Korea.
This is Lee Young Ho.
Flash, "My focus today was to follow my instincts" "I'll convert to Starcraft 2 when the time is right"
Q Your feelings on winning? A I’m so happy. Over all else, because I was able to win the Golden Mouse, I'm even happier. On top of that, because I was able to win on a foreign stage that was held in Shanghai for the first time, I feel like my happiness is two-fold.
Q You’ve played Jaedong in the finals quite often - practice must've been difficult. A There was a lot going through my head, so rather than using some other strategy I wanted to stick to my original instinct and mainly go 1rax double cc. I was faced with 4 pool so I did face some difficulty but because my concept today was "follow your gut" I think I was able to overcome it.
Q The road to winning was very dramatic. A When I was faced with 4 pool, even though I had an advantageous build I lost so I was really angry. However, after defending 4 pool successfully in the 3rd set I was able to regain my confidence. I think that's why I was able to focus well in the 4th set and win.
Q We heard you’ve done nothing but practice for 2 days. A The place I was practicing was right at the heart of Shanghai so I was only able to look around a little bit before practicing the rest of the time. Today I slept a lot to regain my strength. I warmed up my hands once I got here too. I plan on focusing on touring Shanghai tomorrow since I won (laughs).
Q Your strategy for the 4th set was 5 rax. A Because Jaedong used such fast strategies in the 2nd and 3rd set, I modified my original strategy as well. I initially planned on a slow, steady game but I didn’t want to lose to Jaedong in mind games. Because of this I used a 5 rax to mess up his timing.
Q With this victory, you’ve risen to Bonjwa status. A Receiving a title like that is quite an honor but compared to the players who rose to that level before, I think I’m still lacking. Though it’s nice if fans call me that, I still think “Ultimate Weapon” is better and more appropriate for me right now.
Q You might meet Jaedong again in the WCG finals. A Our team is going on a break soon. Earlier after the finals finished, Jaedong and I exchanged blessings saying “let’s meet in LA”. After our team gets back from Cebu (Philippines), I’ve planned to meet Jaedong personally and have a meal with him. As big of an honor as it is to represent our country, I’ll make sure Jaedong and I work hard together to advance to the high levels and if I do end up meeting him in the finals, I want to have another great match with him.
Q What if you meet someone other than Jaedong? A If I meet another player, I always have full confidence that I can beat them. I want to be able to compete with other players and present better games to the fans.
Q The difference between Korean and Chinese fans? A Korean fans know every single thing about me pretty well. However, while Chinese fans may not care about me as much on a personal level, I think they seem more passionate about my gaming. I think there is a difference there.
Q You’ve received the Golden Mouse. Your thoughts on the future? A I’ve heard they give something else for a player who wins 5 times. I’m going to set that as my new goal and run towards it.
Q Your thoughts on attempting Starcraft 2? A As of now, I don’t have the time to properly attempt Starcraft 2. I am following the news on Starcraft 2 and staying updated on it. Once the time is right, I guess I’ll convert but for now I have absolutely no thoughts on doing so.
Q You've earned a lot of money this year. A I'm so happy I was able to earn so much; I plan on giving it all to my parents. In the future I'll get a real present from them like a car or something else.
Q Before the game you greeted the fans in Chinese a little bit. A I thought it would be rude if I came to China and wasn't able to speak any of the language so I sent a request to the interpretors. I had it memorized all day but I guess I was nervous because I forgot it on stage (laughs). I prepared that for my Chinese fans. I said I was happy I could meet them like this and that I would definitely win the Golden Mouse.
Q It rained a lot. A Before the games as I was trying to warm up my hands it was raining so hard so I was worried too. I'm not sure if the heavens helped but right before the games the rain just stopped. In more ways than one I think fortune was on my side.
Q How does it feel holding the Golden Mouse? A It weighs less than I thought it would (laughs). Because I was able to follow the achievements of other players I respect, I'm really happy. In the past, I watched Nada earn his Golden Mouse like a dream, and now I'm holding it myself today.
Q Last words you want to say? A My parents, the executive staff, teammates, and coaching staff - I'm so happy to be here together with you guys. I also want to say thank you to the fans who cheered for me in Korea.
Q You’ve received the Golden Mouse. Your thoughts on the future? A I’ve heard they give something else for a player who wins 5 times. I’m going to set that as my new goal and run towards it.
Yeah who cares about mere gold? Go for PLATINUM! Also, Bonjwa.
thanks smix! oh man this bonjwaness is scary... I've been waiting for it for so long, but now it's just... blah. I might find a new favorite player. maybe.
Q Your thoughts on attempting Starcraft 2? A As of now, I don’t have the time to properly attempt Starcraft 2. Once the time is right, I guess I’ll convert but for now I have absolutely no thoughts on doing so.

Glad to hear JD seemed to take this loss quite nicely and that they'll have a meal together. JD you are a fucking beast as well and one of the greatest of all time.

Flash is going the way of Bruce Lee! "The style of no style"
Anyways congratz you defeated the ulitmate mind game player with mind games. You deserve your Golden mouse.
Istill cant beleive he never used 14 cc this time. Just as nukethestars said " FLash got the maphack sense written into his genom code" . All hail the best terran player of all time.

Flash is what got me into watching BW as I never really played, and through this last year thick and thin always lee young ho #1. Go go Platinum Mouse!!!
On September 12 2010 00:42 disciple wrote: sooo happy for Flash, totally deserves everything he won in the past year, it only makes sense that the 5th Bonjwa is a terran player
A backhanded compliment that I can agree with, but it's nice to see the former child-labor Terran finally getting some trophies. Sad that it has to be at JD's expense though -- thankfully JD has enough titles to prevent him from becoming the new Yellow, ever a victim of the imba.
No denying it he is bonjwa after all those achievements, but damn I really thought Jaedong would've got it first since he was ahead in achievements, but you can't argue with so many dual league finals =/
Sigh...........so depressed. Need to cheer up somehow =(

well, will he get all his money back once he stops playing starcraft? Would a real shame if a million+ dollars would go to his parents and he's in his late 20s with 0 dollars.

You know I love the guy, but he really needs (like a lot of other starcraft players) to be proud of what they have done. They almost always feel they didn't do as good as they liked, blah blah blah we don't care, you won.

geez do people in canada have parents that don't kinda take care of their childrens finances at least a bit? while they're still younger? haha
of course they'll give their own son his hard earned winnings back lol

I wish that was true but the parents of child-celebrities can still be raging assholes and irresponsible with money that isn't theirs. Even if they don't intend to be deliberately malicious, it is very possible that they'll blow a lot of money on frivolous crap they don't need, or blow it all gambling, etc..

perhaps like cambium said its a cultural difference anyway congrats to flash again~
As the sun over the battlefield set you could see only one man ,the one who came to the battlefield last and youngest ,the one who became a man on that battlefield, standing above all ,on the mountain of corpses who all fell by his hand. Once there were four who were above ,equal only to each other, called taekbang leessang now there is only one standing , his shield broken his armor full of dents, on the last one who fell, his greatest rival. Those four figures who were above him who he had hoped to reach were equal , no , they were beneath him, now he was above them . He saw that took his sword pointed at them and said ''It has only begun''.

If BW continues to have more OSLs in the future, I hope Flash gets that platinum mouse.
Congratulations Flash. It's been a special ride watching his rise to the throne from the beginning. Watching greatness blossom was a sight to behold. His career started with a bang at a tender age, but nonetheless he had to earn his respect every step of the way. You can make a list about what critics said he can't do, but unfortunately for them, he was his own harshest critic. So much so that many times his weakness turns into laughable irony in that given enough time, the holes and chinks in his armour transforms into the sharpest point of a blade for him to slay his competition.
What a fitting moment to be crowned bonjwa. Being only the 2nd player in history to win two titles in the same season and 4th in the history to win Golden Mouse while beating in both finals greatest rival and by far the 2nd best player in the world.
GAhhhhhh, just watched the VODs. Flash is completely deserving, but I'm getting sick of seeing JD get beat so handily. Just how good is Flash where he makes JD resort to 4 pooling twice.
Good thing I'm a fan of both players. No problem calling flash Bonjwa here.
Nice to see Flash ready to make "the move" when the time comes.
The first time i saw Flash play was on the Sambo Intel classic from Gom TV when Flash defeat Boxer... From that day i knew that kid was going to be something more
This is insane. I can't believe he's finally been given bonjwa status after so much debate.
I've always been more of a jaedong fan, while appreciating how well flash plays, but I think it's better that he won these last couple of finals. When sc2 inevitably takes over as the main e-sport, it's good to have someone like flash represent this era of bw.
As much as I'd love for Bisu to hold that title, I can't dispute Flash's bonjwa status.
Q You've earned a lot of money this year. A I'm so happy I was able to earn so much; I plan on giving it all to my parents. In the future I'll get a real present from them like a car or something else.
Like, give give? Not like give for safe keeping?
......
I hope you know what you are doing, Flash. Must be a really tight family.
Edit: Apparently Flash is the SIXTH bonjwa? Jaedong is now the fifth after losing a final...
For the longest time I didn't think there would be a fifth... Flash, Bonjwa. Congrats.
I'm glad to hear to see that he is planning to move unto sc2 when the time is right... Can't wait to see how the transition will go overall (Not just Flash though)
On September 11 2010 22:56 bubblegumbo wrote: Flash is beyond Bonjwa. He is the Last Generation.
Yeah, it seems so. This man has no real weakness. Every game he losesI have the feeling that it is due to him making a mistake and not his opponent outplaying him.
God I wish people like Nada/oov could get back in shape so we can see who is the best terran of all time.
Man, FlaSh v Jaedong is becoming like Boxer v YellOw.. Still, as a FlaSh fan, I'm happy for his win

I'm glad Flash is staying with BW but I would imagine people who want him to switch wouldn't be mad over this. He is at least showing interest in playing SC2 down the road, where there was a good possibility he would just retire after his BW career.
Flash is amongst the trully masters of the game, the bonjwas the progamers who dominated the scene like no other, i cant believe it but this as well as the 5 league tittles for me are the most important as well as the dual league winner.
NO jaedong is not bonjwa cause he hasnt utterly dominated like flash did, so no JD is not bonjwa YET.
And congrats Flash, well deserved! I remember when Flash has only one title to JD's (I believe) four and everybody thought Flash couldn't touch JD in BO5. And now look at that boy! The fucking best season amongst progamers ever, PL, WL, MSL, OSL victory and WCG final as well. That's just unbelievable. Flash was in every single final the whole season.
I believe I've never joined the Bonjwa debate before, but now it's clear. If Flash doesn't deserve to be called Bonjwa, than no one else does. Ultimate Weapon indeed.

FvJ will never be like BvY. It's just a completely different setting and a different level of relationship between the players and the fans.
Not to mention that TvZ was the best matchups of Boxer and Yellow while TvZ is the worst matchup of Flash and Jaedong.

Flash is a G. He is a brilliant player and deserves what he wins. Sad to see JD lose, but flashy just played better. Flash played an outstanding game 4.
O and I hope that the for SC2 never come for flash, we BW fans would miss him too much.
I believe that Flash honestly deserves the title "Bonjwa" now. He is now one of the greats, and on a level of his own. He has now not only achieved far more than Jaedong has, but has completely shut him out at his peak (you can argue that the DONG was at his peak before, but c'mon... both finals, stellar performance all year, etc.). No offense to Jaedong of course, but Flash is just TOO GOOD.
wowowowowow. wait, he said there Cebu right?? what are they doing here in the Philippines????? there are very few Starcraft Brood War players still playing here so it isnt for advertising purposes? what is that all about??

not to mention, korean culture is much different then western culture. its more... very strong family ties. old style families still live together due to the fact that living space is so goddamn expensive. i knew friends who were working at companies like samsung/etc as regular employees, but still living with their family.
i dunno, its like.. you are injecting money into the same pool you will live with unless you somehow make it big, and can afford to buy a million dollar apartmnet/condo -_-;
its no big deal as long as flash's parents aren't complete degens
I guess Flash is gonna be rank 1 PR for the next couple of months... TT_TT cmon JD. But DAMN he made like 430,000 U.S. dollars in this last year from sc, and he's only 18
I’ve heard they give something else for a player who wins 5 times. I’m going to set that as my new goal and run towards it.
Go for it! We need a platinum/diamond mouse winner too.
Great interview!
I like Ultimate Weapon better too. Nice to see that the 5 rax wasnt in his initial gameplan, but just him adapting to Jaedongs rushes. Hoping for some epic games in L.A.
I just watched the vods this is just insane. Crazy mindgames final with some crazy timing decisions, not the lengthiest of finals but very entertaining nonetheless. Thanks for the interview Smix!
I also remembered that right after the 4th game Flash said in the on-spot interview, thanks to HoeJJa for helping him practice. I suppose HoeJJa pulled a couple of 4pools in practice? lol

Nice interview! Flash is really an awesome and humble played. Much respect to him. The pros right now must be hoping he doesn't swap to sc2, he own everybody so badly haha
He proved how incredible he is once again, I'm hoping for more epic F v J matches in the future, but Jaedong needs to win again so the rivalry is more balanced!

OGN already settled negotiations with Gretech, so even if the court case goes badly and the courts say that KeSPA and MBC can't broadcast without negotiations from Gretech, OGN could still run the Brood War OSL (assuming KeSPA allows their players/teams to do so). Beyond that, even if KeSPA/MBC get told they can't broadcast it's still possible that they'll negotiate with Gretech. I doubt KeSPA and MBC would just give up and let Brood War die and Gretech certainly wouldn't refuse to negotiate unless they wanted all of Korea and all of the rest of the world to hate them for all eternity.
So yeah, I don't really see the death of Brood War coming anytime soon.
Congratulations Flash! I am a Zerg fan and was rooting for Jaedong to be the first to ever win 4 OSL trophies, but man Flash deserves his golden mouse, so as a fan of all that is Starcraft, it was a win-win situation. It wasn't the most epic finals, but it was very entertaining. Alot of cheeses and a very sick 4th game!
I agree with flash, i would rather call him the "ultimate weapon" rather than bonjwa. There have been 4 bonjwas before so it's not a unique title, but there is and will only always be one ultimate weapon: Lee Young Ho.

no they didn't
ogn has to get a license for every tournament. This means if they want another OSL, they need to contract with gretech again

I think that's a really respectable thing to do, assuming that his parents will take care him the rest of his life because he has probably given his parents more money than they have earned in their life... I mean, if he was raised in a house where everything was given to him as a kid, that would be the way of repaying your parents, especially if he knows he would just blow it all on stupid shit.
