+ Show Spoiler +Since nobody's stepped up - I shall take this opportunity to give my take on things. Zed Research Inc. is pleased to present a level 1 research note exclusively for its clients at Team Liquid. ZRI has assigned a STRONG BUY rating to the STX Starcraft of Unbelievable Legend Pro-gaming team and is including the team in its Top 3 Recommended Picks. The following research report will detail the analysis that has gone into making this recommendation.
The STX Soul pro-gaming team possesses several unique competitive advantages over its peers in the same industry. These include an incomparably dominant team ace, a unique and eclectic set of key personnel, a truly strategic manager not afraid to think outside the box, and a secret weapon. As well, the theoretical underpinning of the proleague championship market dictates that STX's championship may well be nigh.
Ultimate Team Ace
When investors survey this industry to look for a team ace, many misguidedly focus on players like "Flash" or "Jaedong" - not realizing that the ultimate team ace actually resides on the STX Soul roster. This quiet and unassuming player is quite the hard worker and produces unparalleled results for his team. Consider the statistics from 09-10 Proleague R5, the most recent market data that is available.
Flash, the "ace" player for KT Lobster has provided 23% of his team's wins, maintaining a 46% win rate. This player indeed provides almost a quarter of his team's wins, and is rightfully considered an ace player for his team, although it must be noted that several players for other teams maintain a substantially higher win rate.
Jaedong, the "ace" player for Hwaseung Oz has provided 35% of his team's wins, while maintaining a 75% win rate. As the statistics indicate, Jaedong is even more of an "ace" player for his team than Flash is, when considering the most recent results.
However, STX Soul's ace player has provided 36% of his team's wins, while maintaining a 83% win rate. It's clear from such data that STX's ace player is the ultimate among ace players, and a core reason why STX Soul may win the proleague championship. And just who is this amazing player?
That's right. Frozen is the uncontested best team ace in the industry - and he works exclusively for STX Soul (not for his former team, Samsung Khan, as indicated in our file photo), a competitive advantage no other team can match. Frozen may very well be the true spearhead that will lead his team to victory.
Unique Cast of Other Key Personnel
Not only does STX Soul exclusively possess the best team ace in the industry, the team also retains the services of players who have no equal. This basic report includes an overview of two of these key members of STX Soul, please upgrade your subscription to ZRI Platinum for the more detailed report covering all the principal members of STX.
Kal's impressive win collection in proleague R5 clearly indicates his superiority over more than 120 other active professional gamers. With only 43 active progamers scoring more wins than Kal, that places him at over 75th percentile among progamers - it's like a B+ on a report card, pretty good, eh? Something a mother would be proud of, unless she's Asian. But Kal's mother is Asian, isn't she? Uh-oh. Still, with Kal's results indicating his superiority over three quarters of his potential competition, it is anticipated that he will secure important wins in the coming playoffs.
Fun Fact: Kal's also known for his supremely self-satisfied smiles, surfacing on his face when he claims victory over his foes. Kal's also WAY taller than any other active progamer today, at 188cm, which provides an advantage no other player can replicate during group selections and other important events in a progamer's life. Thus, Kal is expected to be one of the major factors in STX's coming victory.
Clam is a rather particular specimen in a family of freshwater mollusks. Clam has a shell made of two asymmetrically rounded halves which mirror each other, joined by a flexible ligament. While none of these attributes are particularly of interest to a pro-gaming team, clam's other ability truly provides a competitive advantage that no other team can match. When irritated by microscopic object trapped within its shell, clam can produce a valuable pearl by the depositing of multiple layers of calcium carbonate around the invading speck. Unfortunately, this process can take up to several years, during which Clam cannot be disturbed. However, whether or not Clam is currently in the process of producing a pearl is a competitive secret that ZRI researchers have not been able to dig out. Nonetheless, Clam is projected to be a major contributor to STX's eventual championship.
The Strategic Thinker
While manager Kim Eun Dong has not shown any particular acumen in terms of personnel training and management, what sets this leader apart is his truly strategic, out-of-the-box decisions. No other manager in the industry has ever employed such innovative tactics or have blindsided their opponents so effectively as this man, and it is expected that he will also play a major role in leading STX Soul to victory. One of his startling strategies involved removing the team from the bench during competition, striking fear and bewilderment to their opponents, a truly game-changing decision. Analysts agree that this unique strategy allowed STX Soul to win two matches they otherwise would have lost, truly a credit to this man's genius. Another of his strategic moves was to form a temporary partnership with one of STX Soul's competitors to take down a mutual competitor to reduce the pressure that was building up on his team. By offering a small reward in the form of chicken to key Hwaseung Oz personnel, manager Kim was able to incentivize his competitors to crush STX Soul's key rival. STX Soul's manager is expected to continue to innovate in ways the industry has never seen, leading his team to a much-anticipated victory.
The Nuclear Option
STX Soul also uniquely possesses a strategic weapon that none of its competitors have access to, a weapon of such destruction it could be the industry's equivalent of an atomic bomb. Consider this quote from STX manager Kim Eun Dong: "It is very unlikely that Tossgirl will be able to play in our last game of the season against SKT." Many observers entirely misinterpret the true meaning of this menacing statement and treat it of no importance, but insiders understand the grave threat he makes to his competitors. Notice how the manager emphasizes the possibility of Tossgirl being activated for a match, while simultaneously indicating that the expected destruction if Tossgirl is put into play is too risky for use in a regular season game. By this subtle proclamation during an interview, the STX manager has not only declared that his strategic weapon is ready for use, but also his resolve to use it if necessary in the playoffs.
Efficient Market Hypothesis
This hypothesis states that all participants achieve average results over a long period of time. Given that there has been over 12 proleague championships so far with STX Soul winning none of them, EMH states that it is expected that STX Soul should have one championship to its name. Thus, STX Soul will bring balance to the markets when it achieves its anticipated victory in a few weeks.
Conclusion
This concludes the presentation of ZRI's analysis that indicates STX Soul may very well win the upcoming proleague championship. It is suggested that you contact your broker immediately to re-align your portfolio to take advantage of this upcoming shift in the industry.

I'd be careful with your stock photo of CuteAngel there. I mean sure, he won with it... but it didn't exactly help out the rest of his team much.
Thanks for reminding me of my favorite Proleague finals series ever, though.

The Clam paragraph is hilarious, but saying that Frozean could be the spearhead that leads STX to win the proleague is a fucking disgrace.

Well, if Frozean contributed to a bigger share of the wins, it's just because his clanmates sucked. But it's not because his clanmates are bad that it makes him good. Kal would still rape any non S-class zerg, and Calm seems to have ended his losing streak. And I don't focus too much on statistics, because that would mean Frozean > Flash. No way. Seriously, even if Flash has had a bad streak in ace matches, he would still be a better ace player than Frozean.
I apologize if "fucking disgrace" sounded offensive, I didn't mean to be offensive since I enjoyed your article, but Frozean is still an awful player imo. He just did quite well during the last round, exactly at the moment where the two other STX aces sucked hard. It's exactly like saying that while Bisu was slumping and SKT zergs did quite well, SKT zergs would be the spearhead that leads SKT to win the the proleague. SKT zergs are still awful, as we just witnessed during the playoffs against CJ.

You are missing the point of this thread. Notice the SKT icon behind thread starter.

I thought about it, because nobody "should" be stupid enough to blindly follow statistics, but I also remember there were some real Frozean fans, and guessed he might be one of them. Frozean is known for sucking but making big upsets (he's 4-2 vs Bisu and 2-1 vs JD :'( )
Anyway, the point of writing the "why xyz will win the proleague" is to show why you are truely believing in a team and his players, not to mock them. And that's why these articles are so interesting, because when a dedicated fan provides great arguments why his favorite team actually has a good chance to win, he can even convince the anti-fans that the team has a decent shot. (Indeed this article has been written by a SKT fan )
Edit :
On July 20 2010 14:46 cascades wrote: You are missing the point of this thread. Notice the SKT icon behind thread starter.
Yes I saw it. But you can love two teams and be able to put only one icon. I am also a huge fan of Samsung Khan even if my icon says SKT. And from what I read the previous years, I insist that the point of "why this team will win the proleague" is to provide real arguments, in order to increase the hype, not to make fun of the team.
Re-edit : Ok, I admit that the Kal paragraph was explicit enough to see it was a joke, but I'm still looking forward to seeing a real STX fan to write an article, otherwise this is gonna be the most under hyped semi finals ever

Well its been pretty much revealed that Kal likes to go clubbing a lot, and you know what happens once a progamer goes down that path..

I fully expect STX to go to the finals. You just watch, SKT will advance over WMF and in game 3 Cuteangelwill snipe Bisu in the ace match. At this very moment, he's up awake, preparing a build to destroy all. In Cuteangel we trust! Kal, Calm, Shuttle, hero, and Bogus. At least 2 wins from 2 and Cuteangel with 2 wins to clean up.
+ Show Spoiler +Kidding... kinda. We'll see how STX's form is soon

For the second ranked team after five rounds of proleague, that's pretty remarkable. Though it doesn't really surprise me, when you've got such a disfunctional team with such a dumb manager.
Every team needs his clutch player and STX hasn't really. Kal and Clam are unreliable at best, with one a choker and the other no team player. Hero and Shuttle lack confidence. Hwasin and July aren't even on the roster any more :/ Modesty is a one match up wonder, but I wouldn't play him against a zerg ace anyway. And don't get me started on the STX terran line... Though Zona has the right idea, the only man on the team right now is Frozen. Problem is that he's very bad under pressure, so sending him out for ace is not a possibility.
The coach of STX... There are a couple of teams that have bad management ranging from ineffective (estro) to criminal (Hite Sparkyz before the scandal), and STX SouL's in the boat with the one from Woongjin Stars. Nice team, lovely atmosphere, but no killer instinct and no fucking clue.
So many good players, such a strong bench, but count on the coach to send out the choker (Kal, Zero) for ace and the slumper (Clam, Guemchi/Piano) in every goddamn match when perfectly fine players (July/Hero, Kwanro/MVP) get too little playtime.
It mystifies me that MVP got a shitload of games when he was terrible, and now that he's half decent, he barely gets one. Though Kwanro is no superman, he's got a unique style and actually performs better under pressure. Still he has to endure Guemchi getting games instead. With a little prediction skills you can put Hero or even July in situations where they'll kill a superior player. Hero could be the Best of STX, and July the Iris/Canata/Nada.
Instead, Calm is sent out twice every other match while in a slump, Kal becomes the ace that loses to anyone half decent (look out for him losing to Shine when it does come to a STX vs Wemade) and the rest is sent out almost randomly, winning games by sheer luck rather than plan. Finest example is the Shuttle vs ForGG ace match, when Shuttle couldn't believe his luck when he dodged flash and got a ForGG that at that moment only had his tvz going for him.
One thing is for sure: Frozen will win at least one game and it will be epic. Besides that I predict that Hero won't play a toss, Shuttle won't play a macro map, Clam will fuck around (though he might still win), Kal will dominate a couple of noobs and then choke, Modesty will lose a zvz and the rest will be ugly filler.
I apologize for this rant, but I feel that this team had it coming for a long time.
My coach once told me that you can recognize who actually has a clue and who doesn't. Interestingly enough most athletes and many coaches really don't. They'll win against others like themselves, but suddenly lose when they face those that are smart, that play the mind games, that improve upon their game.
In the group of newbies that I am training with, you'd randomly have someone who'd beat everyone one day, and I'd be like, hey coach, doesn't that guy have talent? And my coach would laugh and point out that the same guy lost more than he won in the previous weeks. And next time you'd have someone else who'd win everything out of nowhere and the same story happens again. But when a guy came round that, although a newbie, did know what he was doing, you saw him progress slowly from losing more, to breaking even, to winning most of his games. It's that solid progression that shows true quality.
Teams like MBC, CJ entus, SKT1, and to a lesser extent KT Rolster and Hwaseung Oz, have that quality. Even Airforce ace, with their determined coach, know what they're doing. Woongjin Stars, STX SouL, and Estro, and to a lesser extent Samsung KHAN, however, don't have a clue. They randomly do well and randomly lose, never performing above expectations, often going below. They don't learn from mistakes, they don't learn from success. Everyone, deep inside, knows this. Even the STX SouL fans, and it's no coincidence that eventually a SKT1 fan, belatedly, decides to make a (joke) thread on STX's chances.

Everyone jokes about how the coach should send Tossgirl and other B-teamers - but to be honest, R5 was the time to try her out. What's the worse that could happen, another loss? It's not like the "main" stars are winning.
We'll see if the players recover during the break - but given that the slide started early in R5 and hasn't been stopped throughout more than the entire month, I don't think chances are good that the extra time will help. It'd be MORE exciting if they found their form though.
|
STX was no joke my favorite to win PL until Hwasin left. They were the deepest team and the only one with a solid player of each race, but without a decent Terran they are doomed in a Bo7.
|
If you're talking about the time when Hwasin was still a player, Luxury was still a player for KT then as well, KT was pretty damn strong then.
|
Hahaha STX has become rather weak lately.
I would love to see Tossgirl or frozean as their ace player.
|
STX won't play July, but they main-teamed TossGirl. They're doomed.
|
oh man, this writeup made me really happy, go stx!!!

Try tossgirl out, for what? She's certainly not gonna get any better. Sending out B-teamer with potential would have been more productive. Or just send out the usual A-team in hopes that they can regain their mojo and momentum.

...wasn't this a joke write-up? I got the impression that the OP (AWESOME JOB, by the way) was just kidding around and made this thread, giving it an almost satirical professionalism, etc.
I laughed--hard--but now I'm not sure if I should, because people are reacting seriously. This was supposed to be a joke/funny thread...right? :D

Tossgirl is obvious their 2nd best Terran, after CuteAngel of course!
CuteAngel for bonjwa?!

Yes.
GO SHUTTLE. STX shall be carried to victory on your shoulders.

If there's someone that should step up to take a win it's them. And c'mon, sending out July? We love that sumo but there's no chance he's going to catch another title or win 50%+ of his games these days.

Do you think there's a coincidence that he has 38 zvz games while his zvt and zvp only stacks up to 27? It's because the coach predicts and is able to use modesty in the only way he can, as a ZvZ player. Because quite honestly, he's a terrible player in the other matchups.
Most players are good vs protoss, Calm Hero and Shuttle all have very high win percentage, while there aren't many players that are good versus terran. The Coach said recently in an interview that he wants a terran player for the team but there aren't anyone for sale now, at the same time their younger terrans hasn't really showed much yet (Last Bogus).. It's a weak spot but it's difficult to do something about, even though he's a coach he couldn't predict that their only decent terranplayer would be banned for life, halfway hrough the season.
I know it's trendy to hate STX, all the cool kids are doing it. But even though they're in a slump the finished 2nd in the regular season and even if they can't get out of their slump until the semi's they still get at least Bronze.
They deserve some love even in these shitfest of a thread !

That writeup was pure awesome :D
Hm.. Humor seems to be a rare thing on TL.net these days...

Was this written by a Lehman Brothers credit analyst?

STX has a reliable protoss in Kal, plus a decent backup in Shuttle.
Calm ought to be out of his slump by the Semi-Final, while hero and Modesty can still perform ZvP and ZvZ respectively.
But everyone already knows that the team has good protosses and zerg(s). As for the terran lineup, Frozean, Last, and Bogus together cover all match ups. They are all proficient in TvZ and hit-or-miss in TvT. The latter two players cover TvP.

epic thread... right up there with the 'Terran is the manliest' thread!
and STX will be swept out for sure.

Let me say this first: my rant was entirely serious, though I completely understood the OP to be joking. My hate is solely directed to the p.o.s. that is the STX coach, since I respect, and like, many of the STX players. It was merely triggered by the joke the OP was making, since it struck me as weird that an SKT1 fan would complete the cycle of threads for STX, even though they reached 2nd place in the regular season. Then things clicked together and I understood that something is deeply wrong with the team.
The STX coach sealed the deal with his remark in the P.O. day1 interview when he said that Shuttle wouldn't get a game since he was not good enough in practice. A real coach would never say that in public. Coaching is all about instilling confidence, and you can see the difference between a good coach like coach Park who'll send out Canata in clutch situations and praising the terran veteran afterwards, and a bad coach like the STX one who'll rag on the players that are slumping, which is similar to a kicking a man while he's down. Coaches like him disgust me. This manager is the reason that all the excellent players from STX SouL like July, Hero, Calm, Shuttle, Frozen, Bogus, and even Kal, perform way under their abilities, especially in important, pressurizing situations.

Well, looks like STX is out. On paper they have an amazing team....don't know what happened
|
i am absolutely shocked that such an analysis happened to be wrong. but that's how chance works. i still have absolute faith in your research.
|
The only miscalculation in this report is regarding CuteAngel. As the STX manager foolishly utilized his ultimate ace player in the regular sets instead of the ace sets, the doom of the team was sealed.

If the interview wasn't mistranslated, I agree with this particular point about that comment wholeheartedly. (And the comment about Bogus could be interpreted in a negative way as well, since he wasn't sent out Day 2.) Now it's probably very difficult for us fans to know if the manager was one of the factors responsible for the STX players' slumps, but it can't be denied that managers and coaches have a huge impact on how well players perform. MBCGame Hero had a particular bad run that ended when the manager or head coach was replaced, and anecdotes did slip out that the guy replaced made the environment very poor for the team, so that was one situation where we do know as fans that the coaching staff made a very negative impact.

The "forward-looking statements" part of this writeup is freaking hilarious. Gotta comply with the SEC Kespa when doing a public offering.
