I started following competitive Brood War after seeing Tempest and Lomo play.

Hmm. Double cheese, back when I had never even contemplated the possibility of single cheese. So beautiful.

Uh, right. Back on topic, hope Savior gets better.
I bear this sig to commemorate the loss of the team icon that commemorated Oversky's 2008-2009 Proleague Round 1 performance.

As impressive as Flash's current dominance is he's not close to Savior's bonjwa dominance back then yet. I still remember when everyone was fcking scared of him, calling him Hitler and praying desperately for anyone to just beat him once using cheese or ZvZ lucky builds... but to no avail.
He bullied people left and right so easily everyone even his fans would want to see him beaten once. That feeling of dominance from Savior is unique in the history of Starcraft - maybe only somewhat matched by IloveOOv to a certain extent.

Savior is not the original bonjwa (Boxer, Nada, iloveoov all came before savior). Nor is he the most dominant. I'd say oov was more dominant in his generation. Let's just call it a toss-up.

Bonjwa is a term established during the Savior era, then applied to Boxer, Nada, and Oov in retrospect. So... it all depends on what is meant by "original".

I got to know a little bit more of Savior from this thread.

I know he is a bonjwa, but didnt really understand how dominance you have to be in order to be one.

After reading so much comment now I feel sad I've come to progaming scene so late, I didn't get a chance to see him dominate

Upon reflection I'm reminded of Michael Jordan and I think the parallels are striking.

o Each was the undisputed master of his generation in his sport.

o Each was preceded by a list of great creative players of which they were the most dominant (Bird, Magic, Boxer, Oov, etc).

o Each heralded in a new era of technical players where much of the flash and drama was gone. (maybe the most debatable, but for me, the current NBA can't match the charisma of the former generation, just as in SC. Flash and Jaedong are probably better players than Savior and Boxer, but lack something extra, just as guys like Kobe and Lebron might be more complete than the older greats, but just seem to lack than extra something that Jordan/Bird/Magic had)

o And finally, both Savior and Jordan came down to earth after their time at the top. I think of Jordans "comeback" with the Wizards and sigh. Just as with Savior's "I will destroy everyone in 2009."

Maybe it's just nostalgia for me, but you can't go back it seems. Sigh.

Funny, I was thinking of the exact same thing. Except Jordan's comeback with the Wizard's was decent. He had a few 40 point games (which is amazing considering his age) and he had been out of basketball for a while. With Savior its basically him getting 1 win over Jaedong and 1 over Stork and otherwise just getting obliterated (his game vs best on fighting spirit was so hard to watch). Saviors slump would be like him winning his 4th championship then next season dropping to 10 ppg.

No analogy is perfect (: I think Michael Jordan Yoon is a pretty good comparison though. Air Savior ftw.
