Writers like hot_bid, jwd, plexa, tadzio, riptide and others do amazing writeups of the games that were played and hype the games that are yet to come (this is a pretty bad description that doesn't come close to doing them justice). Anyway, I just found this on ygosu while I was surfing: http://sc.ygosu.com/community/?bid=yeobgi&idx=230505&frombest=Y
Members like konadora and smix do an awesome job of translating articles from fomos.kr so that we can get a sense of what commentators and netizens are saying, as well as helping us get into the mindset of progamers by reading about their thoughts and feelings after the games they just won. I've always wondered if any Koreans go on teamliquid and translate what our awesome writers say and apparently they do!
Here are some screenshots from dyner's blog on naver.com.:
The translated article was [OSL]Trials and Testament by Plexa.
I looked up the original blog, but forgot to post the link. Thanks GTR for posting it: http://blog.naver.com/NBlogMain.nhn?blogId=dyner&Redirect=Dlog&Qs=/dyner/100086483380
Right under where it says 질쉼까페(http://cafe.naver.com/dyner)
It says < 더 보기 > and if you click that, you can see that the person translated nearly the entire article.
The comments are like "who wrote this? If it's just a random netizen...I cannot suppress my surprise, it's so well written" "Wow he must really be a starcraft fan." (could be starcraft nerd, it's a bit stronger than just a fan) "I'm so happy that there's a Korean e-sports fans out there." "clap clap clap...bravo" "there are also some at gosugamers.net"
|
|
I want some translation from the comments!
|
awaiting plexa's response
|
I pmed him this link. I bet he would be thrilled. A lot of the comments are just like expressing their wish that e-sports would develop in foreign countries so that there would be more tournaments so that their country's players would have more opportunities to play. They also say that it's nicely written.
|
Didn't we have a thread a little while ago where mrhoon started translating korean netizen comments, and someone started translating our comments into korean, and it all went in a vicious loop for several articles?
|
Awesome haha
|
This is super cool
|
|
It would be cool if a few bilingual writers on TL helped create a Korean version of TL, and people visiting from a Korean IP would get a splash page asking if they want English or Korean.
|
Netizen translations gogo! =)

lol. that would take forever and koreans have a ton of sites that they can go to anyway.
|
does anyone know if the "type-b absorbs the powers of those he defeats" is an idea that Plexa came up with, or is it something the koreans did? because if it's just something Plexa made up, then that means the koreans know about it, because Leta was seen in the audience of the type-b vs yarnc match with a sign that had a reference to it.

Well, I'd say they have us pinned pretty well.

im surprised it took some of them this long to realize how big a scope tl.net is
|
You know, why doesn't TL forge some official (or semi-offcial) connections with Korean sites? There could be great synergy effect from this and seeing as how we have ~10 bilinguals and a devoted translations team it shouldn't be impossible.
|
Well I'd imagine a Korean TL would either be way too much work or just a shell site that explains what TL is and link to a bunch of articles in English which they can't read.
Also are the TL writers really that nerdy compared to Koreans? I'd imagine there are just as crazy fan sites in Korean. I guess it's just weird because TL is made of foreigners.
|
We tried some kind of connection site before I thought with pgr21.com or something.
|
well I don't think there's any secret that the TL writing staff is one of the best around. and I'm not just talking about SC:BW sites, I'm talking about the net and ever newspapers.

Seriously, I myself have encountered teamliquid only recently and am still amazed at the dedication, resourcefulness, and comprehensiveness (just to name few characteristics) of the website and staff. Just like Korean netizens, I was very surprised there are hardcore fans of starcraft and Korean progamers outside of Korea. In any event, im a total addict to teamliquid and forever will be.. Thank you TL! This is the best site ever!
BTW, when Koreans say Maniac, it is more of a compliment in case you didnt know.. keke

Think about it for a moment.
This forum is dedicated to watching and reporting on the starcraft scene world wide. Currently there is only one pro scene and that just happens to be Korea.
The Korean pro scene is really... well it's professional. It's like the 2nd most watched sport there and it has at least two 24/7 channels dedicated to it.
This is something people around the world would like... the general populace acknowledging that even if it's a game it has entertainment value and requires a ton of skill to play well.
Getting recognition from the premiere e-sports country/citizens is something that you can be proud of you know.. it's a pretty big deal.

Hey hey hey I didn't choose it. I also think that the metric system is better, since we have to learn both for science anyway in America.

Things taken to extremes always gets abit pathetic.
Take Anime fans for example. By watching this style of animation you experience at the same time a quite different way of story telling to what we westerners are used to. This storytelling gets you exposed to different philosophy and imagery. Taking interest in this, you read up on history and folklore. By now you are soaking up everything about this new culture that is so strange and exiting it almost becomes poetic. You soon name your internet persona after your favorite anime character, perhaps even try to learn japanese. All this while ignoring boring things, like that Japan is like any country filled with corrupt politicians, mafia, war crimes, racism and extreme ignorance. Hell, you might even begin to wish you were born japanese, and BAM you're a pathetic weeboo.
But you know, some just want to watch some cool anime, and hearing that their favorite studios realize and acknowledge their existence makes them happy.
There is no surprise that people here starts talking about other things korean, appreciate cute korean girls or listen to their music. Their different culture is just infectious. Them taking pride of our respect is a cheesy but yet a nice feeling. Hearing a crowd chant a gamers name and yell Fighting! while hiding from the camera, still brings a smile to my face and sometimes I think "damn, it would be cool if something like that could happen here in Sweden".
While it should have not been a surprise, after reading the OSL winner interview, I thought it was funny that they had thought and talked about the exact things we have here. So now when we know they are really not that different... why could it not happen?
hehe, now I feel that I am just rambling. Something about this topic made me finally register to show my support. Staff of TL, you are awesome!

On August 23 2009 10:13 Shikyo wrote: Soccer, that is. For the americans I mean, Football for the people who call things by logical names yes. I've ranted about this before (scroll down).
I'm basically tired of the etymologically ignorant blaming us for the whole football/soccer mixup or thinking they can get a free zing. See the the old rules of The Foot-Ball Club in Edinburgh which
forbade tripping, but allowed pushing and holding and the lifting of the ball. Or check out this account from 1825 by William Hone who writes of FOOT-BALL. This was, and remains, a game on Shrove Tuesday, in various parts of England.
Sir Frederick Morton Eden in the "Statistical account of Scotland," says that at the parish of Scone, county of Perth, every year on Shrove Tuesday the bachelors and married men drew themselves up at the cross of Scone, on opposite sides; a ball was then thrown up, and they played from two o'clock till sun-set. The game was this: he who at any time got the ball into his hands, run with it till overtaken by one of the opposite part; and then, if he could shake himself loose from those on the opposite side who seized him, he run on; if not, he threw the ball from him, unless it was wrested from him by the other party, but no person was allowed to kick it.
So please, if you must assign some blame for a confused English word, look to the English (and yeah, I know England and Scotland and Britain are not the same things, sorry my two examples were from Scotland)

I'm fairly sure this is untrue.
I think OGN finals have reached some pretty impressive statistics, but OGN/MBCGame aren't even guaranteed channels in a lot of cable television packages at this point. On average they NEVER break the top 10 in terms of most watched cable channels. And I'm just fairly sure Baseball is by far the #1 the more I think about my personal experiences and variety of info I've come by.

From my ignorant English-teacher-with-a-TV perspective on Koreans sports:
Baseball has three major sports channels basically showing a game a day. I'm not sure what happens when there are four games (K-league has 8 teams) - maybe scheduling staggered?
Soccer/football is on at random times for the K-league and pretty much a soccer game from somewhere in the world every late night on every sports channel - mostly EPL, Spanish, and Champions, although I've even seem MLS highlights.
As far as highlights go, it's mostly soccer. It seems like baseball games in Korea get better attendance overall but soccer rules the TV. Also, far more Koreans talk about baseball - but maybe that's because they assume all foreigners are American and we don't play soccer (which I find irritating, but w/e).
After the big two I would say esports is probably third - basketball and golf are on a lot during the season, but SC runs year round. So my watching feels like the correct order here is baseball/soccer->esports (mostly SC)->basketball/golf->volleyball (the Army has a team, and they're actually decent)->tennis?->no idea.
Of course, I don't have any stats to back this up.

I always enjoy seeing when Koreans (players, commentators, fans) are made aware of how many foreign Pro SC fans there are.
I also think it is a positive step in making e-sports larger in the rest of the world. If more companies like GOM (and Averatec and Intel) can see the potential of bringing pro e-sports to the rest of the world, I believe we can see it slowly spread outside Korea.
