The Group Selection

Group Selection Discussion Thread
Group Selection English Translation

Results and Standings for the Round of 32

Once again we return to a group stage for the round of thirty-two. Each group consists of four players; the group selection event determines their placement in each group. Each group must go through a double elimination format to determine which players will advance and which players are eliminated. If a player can get two wins before he gets two losses, then he advances to the next round. If he can’t, then he is eliminated. Two players from each group of four will have the chance to continue to fight for this season’s title.

Results and Standings for the Round of 16

The number of remaining competitors has been halved as the tournament continues into the Round of 16. Beginning with this round, the tournament becomes single elimination. The players who finished first out of their groups last round will be paired against a player that finished in second. Each pair of players will play a best-of-three match to determine not only who will advance to the next round, but who will earn seeds into the following MSL.

Thumbs Down
Since there are four maps, there will be one map in each best-of-three match that will not be played. The players who finished first out of their group are given the opportunity to give a “thumbs down” to one of the maps. What this means is that the player will get to choose one of the four maps that he will not have to play on during this round. This allows the player the advantage of getting to remove a map that does not fit his play style or that he thinks may be imbalanced in a particular match-up.

It's sort of annoying that there hasn't been one MSL news article

or anyone asking me if I'm going to do the R&S thread again

it's almost as if we've been completely distracted by Starcraft 2

now please excuse me while I go finish my beta key guide

If anyone has any mistakes in the OP to point out, or any suggestions, I'm happy to hear them. For example, I'm cribbing the idea of linking the winner interviews from Grandinquisitor. Does anyone have any other ideas like that?

EDIT: I guess more concretely, should I include VODs in the OP?

when i was making it, instead of having the four people in each group and the 2-0 2-1 1-2 0-2 records (since that's going to be the same for every group), i was doing it something like how pachi did it here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=76966

i think VOD's are a good idea, but it's some additional effort from TLPD

Two advantages of the way it is now: first, it's clearer who will have the advantage in day 2 of the group stages, and second, when the Ro16 rolls around, it'll be more clear how the Ro32 results led to the bracket.

Also, what does the TLPD have to do with linking VODs?

This Round of 16 is going to look so strange ... the advancing players so far are (Z)EffOrt, (P)Kal,      (T)PianO, (Z)Calm, (T)Iris, and (T)fantasy, none of whom made it to last season's Ro16. It should be interesting to say the least.

Finally a thread for the 'less' prestigious of the two star leagues, which I prefer because it gives 'lesser' names a chance to win it. Although I would want (T)fOrGG to win again but there is a fat chance of that happening. I hope a terran player wins though. Maybe (T)Flash perhaps?

To win this MSL
First Jaedong has to beat Leta (#6 Kespa) in a Bo1
then he has to beat Movie (who he already lost to) in a Bo1
then he has to beat Kal (#10 Kespa) in a Bo3
then he has to beat either fantasy or Bisu (#4 and #2 Kespa) in a Bo5
then he has to beat Luxury (2nd best ZvZ) in a Bo5
then he has to beat Flash in a Bo5

...good luck dude

Because Jaedong is 1st KeSPA ranking he faces RO8 lowest KeSPA ranking player.

Dude they don't know English. They hear a song and it sounds cool, they'll use it as the intro regardless of the lyrics. In Korea they can't even say fuck. They say 퍼크 (puh-kih) or 퍽(puhk)

All the Koreans know ssbt though. >=)

So if i did this right. This could be the possible Match ups for the round of 16

Top half

Seed 1 (Z)Jaedong
vs
Seed 16 ???

Seed 8 (T)Hwasin
vs
Seed 9 (Z)Calm

Seed 5 (P)Kal
vs
Seed 12 ???

Seed 4 (T)fantasy
vs
Seed 13 ???

Bottom Half

Seed 3 (T)Flash
vs
Seed 14 ???

Seed 6 (Z)ZerO
vs
Seed 11 (Z)Kwanro

Seed 7 (Z)EffOrt
vs
Seed 10 (T)UpMaGiC

Seed 2 (P)Bisu
vs
Seed 15 ???

To be filled in

places 12 - 16

so if (Z)Jaedong wins he faces (T)Hwasin or (Z)Calm, then most likely (T)fantasy or (P)Kal, and then the finals.

Well if you did read my post I said RO8 but your logic is okay even if you did it for RO16

MSL Round of 16:

(P)Kal vs (Z)Jaedong

(T)fantasy vs (P)Bisu

(T)Iris vs (T)Hwasin

(Z)EffOrt vs (T)UpMaGiC

(T)PianO vs (Z)sAviOr/(T)Canata/(T)go.go

(Z)Calm vs (T)fOrGG/(T)firebathero/(P)Much[gm]

(P)Pure vs (Z)ZerO

(T)Flash vs (Z)Kwanro

MSL Round of 8

(Z)Jaedong rank 1
(P)Bisu rank 2
(T)Hwasin rank 14
(Z)EffOrt rank 12
(T)PianO
(Z)Calm rank 16
(Z)ZerO rank 11
(T)Flash rank 3

So matchups would be

(Z)Jaedong vs (T)PianO
(P)Bisu vs (Z)Calm
(T)Flash vs (T)Hwasin
(Z)ZerO vs (Z)EffOrt

But RO4 order is not known. Perhaps they place highest ranked players otherside of brackets to possible have good finals. Jaedong vs Bisu for example

Fixed.

So let's see how the seeds did in the Ro32:

(Z)Luxury 1-2
(P)JangBi 1-2
(P)Stork 1-2
(Z)ZerO 2-1
(T)NaDa 0-2
(T)Leta 0-2
(Z)sAviOr 1-2
(T)fOrGG 2-1

Only 2 qualifiers, both 2-1, and 2 0-2 epic failures. The Lost Saga MSL may have kinda sucked.

Lost Saga MSL had Nada and Savior, Avalon MSL has neither.

It's clear which MSL sucks more.

No, all those seeds sucked. Tell 'em to shape the fuck up if you want to see the big names make it. Jangbi, Stork, and Luxury didn't deserve to make it, and what to you expect from Nada and Savior? They're in their twilight years.
A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.

This could be a lot like the ClubDay MSL but for reverse Protoss and Zergs. Only 3 Ps in the Ro16 (there were only 3 Zs in the Ro16 of the ClubDay), and it's looking like there might not be any Ps in the Ro8 :O

wtf protosses why do you all suddenly suck except for Bisu?

Yeah, he said - Lost Saga MSL sucked.

I don't care about the fact that sAviOr and NaDa are absent from Avalon MSL Round of 16, because I'd rather see players who are going to be doing well as opposed to players who are going to be getting owned (a la sAviOr, Lost Saga MSL Round of 8). Was it cool to see those two in action once more, garnering seeds? Of course. Is the quality of this MSL (and the likely final) going to be better? Absolutely.

Compare:

Lost Saga MSL Round of 16: (Z)sAviOr, (Z)ZerO, (T)Leta, (Z)Luxury, (P)JangBi, (P)Tempest, free, (Z)Kwanro, (Z)YellOw[ArnC], (T)UpMaGiC, (T)Hwasin, (T)Flash, (T)NaDa, (T)FrOzean, (P)Stork, (T)fOrGG

Avalon MSL Round of 16: (Z)EffOrt, (T)Hwasin, (P)Kal, (P)Bisu, (T)PianO, (Z)Kwanro, (Z)Calm, (Z)ZerO, (T)Iris, (T)UpMaGiC, (T)fantasy, (Z)Jaedong, (T)Flash, (T)Canata, (P)Pure, (T)fOrGG

Lost Saga MSL's draw: sAviOr, NaDa. All the S-Class guys are eliminated.

Avalon MSL's draw: EffOrt, Jaedong, Bisu, fantasy, Flash. THE cream of the crop, right there.

Based on July kespa rankings, today's winners will be facing the following opponents in the Ro8 I believe:

(Z)ZerO vs (Z)Kwanro/(Z)Calm/(T)UpMaGiC

(Z)Calm vs (Z)ZerO/(T)UpMaGiC/(Z)EffOrt/(T)Hwasin

(Z)Kwanro vs (Z)ZerO/(P)Kal/(P)Bisu/(T)fantasy

(T)Canata vs (Z)Jaedong/(P)Bisu/(T)fantasy

Can anyone correct any mistakes

As for the remaining players, assuming they qualify, these will be their possible opponents:

(Z)Jaedong vs (T)Canata (for sure if (Z)Jaedong beats (P)Kal)

(P)Bisu vs (T)Iris/(Z)Kwanro/(T)Canata

(T)fantasy vs (T)Iris/(Z)Kwanro/(T)Canata

(P)Kal vs (T)Iris/(Z)Kwanro

(Z)EffOrt vs (T)Hwasin/(Z)Calm

(T)Hwasin vs (Z)EffOrt/(Z)Calm

(T)UpMaGiC vs (Z)Calm/(Z)ZerO

(T)Iris vs (P)Bisu/(T)fantasy/(P)Kal

Just giving people an idea of how the Ro8 will look like
Can anyone correct any mistakes?

(Z)Jaedong vs (T)Canata (pretty locked up match up as Jaedong leads 1-0 against Kal)

(Z)EffOrt vs (Z)Calm (calm qualified and Effort leading 1-0 vs upmagic)

(Z)ZerO vs (Z)Kwanro (Both players qualified)

(P)Bisu vs (T)Iris (Both players leading their series 1-0)

Only thing I can see here is Bisu changing to Fantasy but even that wont effect brackets.

Those brackets remind me of ClubDay MSL. Only a lot more red and a lot less green

Edit: IIRC, Ro8 of Clubday MSL had 5 Protoss, 2 Terrans, and 1 Zerg. XD

Ya, as you can see, the Ro16 doesn't actually connect to the Ro8 in the diagram.

Today's results confirm this. One ZvT, one PvT and 2 ZvZs.
Jaedong and Bisu should just walk over their opponents and the two ZvZs have potential to be epic.

Seems like 3 zergs advancing to the top 4, can't really & sure as hell don't wanna see Canata beating JD ;<

Got to agree with the statement that MSL is way more interesting than the OSL this season, though there isn't that much excitement as we all know Jaedong is gonna win both!

ZerO vZ: 30-31 (49.18%) | Last 10 (old -> recent): W W L L L L L L W L (3-7)

I beg to differ.

haha both OSL and MSL must have been cursing their stars for a double ZvZ finals

at least the OSL had way more story behind it, Golden Mouse, first back-to-back winner since Boxer, JD, etc.
