The Group Selection

Group Selection Discussion Thread

The Steal Draft

The Steal Draft is a somewhat long and complicated process, not helped at all by the large number of players that now qualify for each MSL season. Here’s how it works:

The first eight seeds are placed into groups A through H, with the first seed in Group A and the eighth seed in Group H. The first eight seeds may never be moved by any player, they remain in the groups in which they are seeded. Seeds nine through sixteen are determined by previous MSL appearances and performance, with more obviously being better. Seeds nine through sixteen are placed into the other pair in groups A through H, but in reverse order. Seeds eight and nine would be in the same group, then seven and ten, six and eleven and so on up until the first and sixteenth.

Once players are placed into the groups, the remaining players are also ranked based upon previous MSL appearance and performances. Starting with the seventeenth, and ending with the thirty-second, each player takes his own name and places it in an open spot next to the player he wishes to play against.

After everyone has been placed upon the board, the stealing begins. It starts in ascending order at the sixteenth seed and moves all the way up to the first. Seed nine through sixteen are allowed three options: (1) Exchange himself with another player, (2) Exchange his current opponent with another player, or (3) Pass the turn and exchange no one.

Seeds three through eight work a little differently. They are able to pick two moves from the following: (1) Exchange a player in their group with another player, (2) Exchange any two other players with each other, or (3) Pass the turn and exchange no one. Seeds two and one earn a few more decisions. They are able to switch any player with another player and may do so up to three times or until they wish to pass.

For details on how this Steal Draft went, you can easily follow each step of the way in the Group Selection Discussion Thread, linked above.

Results and Standings for the Round of 32

Once again we return to a group stage for the round of thirty-two GomTV’s fourth MSL. Each group consists of four players; the Steal Draft determines their placement in each group. Each group must go through a double elimination format to determine which players will advance and which players are eliminated. If a player can get two wins before he gets two losses, then he advances to the next round. If he can’t, then he is eliminated. Two players from each group of four will have the chance to continue to fight for this season’s title.

Results and Standings for the Round of 16

Sixteen players exit the group stage and enter into the single elimination tournament. The format will now be best of three between each pair of players. A player who finished first out of his group will be paired against a player from a different group who came out second. Many of the seeds and several former champions have fallen, but that is not to say there is not ots of talent left in the tournament. There is a lot of new blood hungry for the title and many of these rising stars will want to prove they can take their game up to the next level. Players will not only be fighting to further their chances at the title, but also for seeds in the next season's MSL.

Thumbs Down
Since there are four maps, there will be one map in each best-of-three match that will not be played. The players who finished first out of their group are given the opportunity to give a “thumbs down” to one of the maps. What this means is that the player will get to choose one of the four maps that he will not have to play on during this round. This allows the player the advantage of getting to remove a map that does not fit his play style or that he thinks may be imbalanced in a particular match-up.

Results and Standings for the Quarterfinals

Eight players remain, each of them earning seed for the next MSL as they enter this round. The games per match increase this round to a best-of-five format, the victor continuing on to the Semifinals. The loser will have to wait for another shot at the title next season. All seeds from the previous season have been eliminated, except for one: the returning champion, Mind, as he continue to defend his title.

Thumbs Down
As with last round, there is a thumbing down of maps. However, as we move into the best-of-five matches the thumbing down changes slightly. Due to the five game format it becomes possible for a match to go to the final game in which one of the maps will be played twice. Both of the players will thumb down a map that he will be guaranteed not to have to play on twice. This ensures that he will not have to play on a map more than once if he feels it is not to his style or particularly imbalanced in a particular match-up.

The Grand Finals

The MSL, like all good things, must eventually come to an end. This season we approach that end with two players, the current OSL Champion and a Royal Road contender, out to grab his first big MSL finish. One of these two will rise above the thirty-one other players who have fallen in the tournament and cement themselves into MSL history. Jaedong and Kal, best of five, for all the glory.

March 8 [17:00] - (P)Kal v. (Z)Jaedong

(P)Kal thumbs down Zodiac
(Z)Jaedong thumbs down Loki II

Game 1: (P)Kal > (Z)Jaedong on Blue Storm
Game 2: (P)Kal < (Z)Jaedong on Loki II
Game 3: (P)Kal < (Z)Jaedong on Katrina
Game 4: (P)Kal < (Z)Jaedong on Zodiac
Game 5: (P)Kal v. (Z)Jaedong on Blue Storm

(Z)Jaedong 3-1 ► GomTV MSL Season Four Champion!
(P)Kal 1-3 ► Eliminated

CJ Entus is becoming quite the powerhouse. Too bad Iris, Much and DE didn't make it.

bloody spoiled sc fan! I don't think ANY OTHER RTS community has a yearly map pool change. But then again, no RTS community has lasted as long as SC. Nor has any other community been as dynamic.

Meanwhile, anyone else think they should just scrap ACE? I mean, besides the nostalgic reasons, what other purpose do they serve?
I really wanted a bigger opponent, like Nate Marquardt, or King Neptune, or Zeus, or Zeus and Fedor, or Fedor on Zeus's shoulders, and they can both punch but only Zeus can kick.

Group B looks to be the most exciting.
Bisu vs Jaedong should be an interesting match.
And then July could finally make his come back.

if Jaedong gets past bisu in the group stages, he's going to win it all.

the only person who can beat Jaedong right now is bisu. The only person bisu can beat right now is Jaedong. Still, I think Jaedong is going to 2-0 his group

I have a hunch july will run all over bisu again, I really hope him and jeadong make it out of their groups.

Also glad to see oov again, let's hope he makes it a little farther down the bracket this time.
