Hey TL. I know there's a lot of tokers here and I need your help. I live in California and am considering to get medicated. One reason I'm holding back is the patient confidentiality. If I do get a prescription, who is able to access that information? Is it like any other doctor and prescription medicine where no one can find out unless they have my consent? If I apply to a job and they want to do a background check, will they find out? How private is this information and who has access to it?
My main worry is that when I apply for school or a job and they want to do a background check, they might not be happy with the fact that I'm prescribed marijuana and turn me down.

I couldn't tell you about confidentiality, but if it's for medical purposes they can't legally discriminate against you.

But they could under pretense that they rejected him for other reasons.

an extremely thorough background check on you would eventually link them to the post you just made, so now you might as well go ahead and get the prescription anyway.

Im pretty sure all medical records are to be "confidential" unless you otherwise say.

yeah I thought so too, but since medical weed is kind of in the grey area I thought it might be different

it says it's covered under HIPPA so I'm guessing it's safe

You give up your second amendment rights when you get your card, from what I know.
But In Arizona you can carry a gun into the bar as long as your not drinking.

Not sure about the background checks, but you should know that in California having a prescription does not protect you from discrimination. If you test positive and the company you're applying for has a policy against it they can not hire you for that reason. The state supreme court has ruled that it doesn't have the same protections has other medical disabilities due to it still being illegal on a federal level.

what if I passed the drug test, but have had a prescription for it in the past?

Don't you have to disclose that information to anywhere you apply that you have a card. Thats what I always thought

I don't think it should close any major doors for you. Isn't there a lot of opportunity in California? If you don't get hired go somewhere else. I think as long as you act relatively normal it won't matter to employers if you're a MM patient. How's your heroin going btw?

California is broke as hell. The job market in the major metropolitan areas (Bay area, LA area) is horrible.
In any case, if you're looking to get a medical card, any job you apply to is not going to find out unless they drug test you. To be honest, I'd recommend waiting until after you get a job to get one. It's kind of a dumb idea to do drugs when you're applying for jobs (if you're looking for anything more than a restaurant or walmart job, that is). Further, though, most places don't care too much about weed. I know of some places that will honestly still hire someone on if they only find weed in the drug test.
It's your risk to take, though, I guess.

I have a card. Here's my take on things: You absolutely can still be fired or denied a job for testing positive for drugs in your system; however, the company isn't going to find out about your med card if you don't want them to. My recommendation would be to learn to pass a drug test(substitution is simple).
