SC2: Finally knowing where I stand

Half a year ago I played SC2 a lot, though 80% 3v3 RT. I scored Diamond in 3v3 RT and Gold in Duels, but I barely played duels after all. Now, that half year later I played 3v3 again and I could feel the skill level was way up, I lost a lot of games and my lack of practice was showing.

Finally I decided to try duels again, and well I ended up in Silver and got beaten pretty hard. But that's a BIG relief to me. Eventually I had to realize that 3v3 Diamond was a big fluke and I just got carried by others most of the time. I may have learned a big deal from August to November 2010, but that's not helping now. Players have moved on and gained A LOT of skill, while I was not playing.

Now I know what my current level is and can start working with that. I will keep at it with duels and learn how to suck less game by game. Maybe some day 3v3 RT will become once again more fun to me, as I am one to carry the others.

Regards

he prob means 1v1. most people have settled into the league they should be in so your progression should be more noticeable.
PM me if you want random korean images translated.

Being Diamond in 3v3 may not be a fluke. Its just that most good people don't mass 3v3s and therefore you have a pool of worse players and so you are diamond in 3v3

1v1 is all about finding and refining good build orders. If you analyse your own replays and tweak the builds according to what you see, you'll rise quickly. It's also a great idea to steal some sexy builds you see pros use and really delve into it. You just have to have the perseverance and the motivation to keep going when times get rough and you feel like you've hit a brick wall.

Oh and maybe watch the Day9 daily about mechanics if you feel that is your weakness.

Anywho, gl hf!

grats to you, its better to get matched up against players of similar level. Its better to grow as a player rather than care solely about rank as a defining characteristic of yourself. Ranks will come with work and reflection, its good that you understand this concept.

Gave you a 5/5 because you presented a humble opinion which I agree with.

Thanks for your insight guys. I want practice properly to gain more experience in the future. I feel like 3v3 is a lot of fun, but you can't analyse your mistakes as good as in a duel. You still got two allies and I know I often fall for the trap and look for the mistakes in my allies' play and not mine. In a duel there is only me doing things wrong, and that's where I can learn the most from.

I want to play random in duels. It seems hard to me but I have the feeling I learn more in the long run and it will help my 3v3 performance as well, having knowledge of all three races. AND on a different note, I LOVE the random avatars (they are a motivation as well ). Do you have any suggestions which BOs I could learn for a start? One per race would be a good start.

For protoss I actually recommend 4 gate as it is a mapped out build that can work on mechanics. Its timings are precise and it forces you to constantly do things like chrono boost. You also know you did it "right" when you finish warpgate tech just in time, or when you hit 26/26 and lay down some pylons and get ready to warp in. It also teaches you how to be aggressive as well as work on unit control when your attacking. Its also a solid build that works on all levels.

Most low level games end in some unit dominate (dts/void rays/banshees/proxy rush/cannon rush) and the 4 gate comes before the "late game autowin units" at that level. A lot of new players also turtle until 200/200 before attacking and following the precise build and when to attack draws you to attack when you just gained an army boost rather than never attacking, or whenever you feel like it.

I think by duels he means 1v1s.

Keep in mind, ionize, that the way team games are played is incredibly different than the way 1v1 games are played. The game is balanced around 1v1, and some strategies are simply not viable to do in team games.
