So I've always been a very macro-heavy player. I loathed attacking, never knew when to do it. Whenever I'd tried it in the past I'd often just lost my army and had no idea how. Then, I discovered something in PvP.

At Platinum League on the NA server, a reasonably popular opening appears to be a fairly fast expansion, relying on four or more Sentries to protect you from early aggression. One game, I scouted an expo already done, with a bunch of sentries, and thought "Dammit. Colossus all-in." So I all-ined, and won. Colossi stomp force fields and gas is so important in PvP that my opponent's army was far weaker than my own.

Cue a stomping barrage where I won almost all my PvP's doing this exact push...never proactively. I always, always reacted to my opponent...never making the commitment to all-in without seeing his expansion. And then today came along.

My opponent made three Sentries: Not quite the critical mass for me to bowl him over, but I threw down my Robo Bay anyway, figuring he was likely going defensive. He threw down his expo, so did I, and then I wandered around with my Observer, looking for a weak spot, and I realised. I wanted to attack. I wanted to find a timing I could use to win, and crush my opponent. I've always been a late-game oriented player, but now I found myself scrutinising my opponent's tech and army, praying for an opening to lunge at.

And I found it: Late Colossus tech from my opponent allowed me to grab my third and fourth gases fast and grab Extended Thermal Lance for a powerful timing attack. At 4 Colossi to his one, I struck, and overwhelmed him. He was going double forge, but if he hadn't, I reckon I would have been fine. And I was happy.

In PvP at least, aggression is good. I can see why it's such a volatile matchup now...make a mistake, and your opponent can kill you. It's just, I've never had the knowledge and scouting ability to take advantage of that before. And I'm really enjoying this new playstyle of selective aggression. Macro is all well and good, but attacking is my new favourite activity in PvP. The playstyle I've had since basically the start of the game may be giving way to a different one. And you know what? I'm fine with that.

Aggression is good.

Macro, isn't only about building workers and expanding. Researching your upgrades, pumping out units and getting the right timing to attack are also part of macro.

Yeah, I know. I'm not saying I don't macro anymore, just that I'm not as heavy on macro. Everyone macros, just like everyone micros, since even 1a is micro

Yeah, I do the same thing, not attacking as early as I should most games, always being paranoid about my army. Granted, I suck, but the other day I accidentally destroyed a guy with fast speedlings. Ironically, when I play too paranoid, I tend to lose. Which makes me more paranoid.

What's your definition of "standard"? I always thought that scouting was supposed to be part of it, and punishing your opponent for not doing things they should have done. Losing to all-ins is karma for being greedy.

I assume you actually were trying to hide a balance whine under several layers of complaining about the way other people play.

Wow, did you not read his post?

If someone plays greedy or sloppy and you scout it, you go kill him. It's not like OP's all-inning everybody on the ladder; he's reacting to what he scouts. Greed and sloppy play are supposed to be punishable in a game like SC2.

RTS - real time STRATEGY.
Killing someone when they make a mistake is a very very basic strategy....
