In any discussion of balance, there are a few units whose names always seem to pop up. "Marines are too massable and versatile." "Mutalisks are way too mobile." "Colossus can walk over mineral patches." (That's why people hate the Colossus, right?) But there's one unit that somehow seems to constantly escape these conversations. It's a unit that has so many powerful features unique only to itself. It's a unit that is massed in every single game featuring a zerg. I am talking, of course, about the larva.

There are not many units that can transform into other units. The Zergling into the Baneling and the Corruptor into the Brood Lord are examples of this. But there are no units that have the ability to change into as many different units as the larva can. There are nine different units that the larva can transform into, much more than any other unit. You can pick whichever unit will best suit your needs at that point in time!

The huge, ridiculous number of things the larva can morph into with just a single click.

It is also one of the hardest units to kill in the entire game. They might only have 25 health but their base 10 armor is the highest in the entire game by over 300%! The one unit that has 3 base armor (the Battlecruiser) costs 400 minerals, 300 gas, and is very high up the tech tree. The larva on the other hand produces itself, is free, and you spawn with three of them at the very start of the game. Crazy, I know.

Another fairly unique aspect of the larva is that it does not cost any supply. This is a feature only shared by other imbaimba units like Changeling, the Infested Terran, and the Interceptor. I feel this is very under-appreciated by zerg players, especially considering how much the race is limited by the 200 supply cap. Not only does the larva not cost supply, it can even transform into an overlord, a unit that gives you supply. Changelings can’t do that. Interceptors can’t do that. Only larvae can.

Just look at all those cute little Imbaimbas, squirming around.

Part Two: My Secret Project
Since this was kinda short, I thought I would take this as an opportunity to discuss the project I’m currently immersed in. I have recently seen a handful of people with ambitious attempts to make 100 “quality” posts in one day. General consensus says that this is impossible, though 100 posts in total can be done by abusing LR threads. But still, this idea intrigued me.

However, as someone without that high of a PPD (posts per day), I felt this wasn’t the challenge for me. So I sought out a different challenge. I decided that once per day for 7 days, I would release some sort of write up like this one. This started yesterday with my overview of BW’s neutral critters.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t make a blog to announce this because it would defeat the entire purpose! You cant make two on the same day! Plus it would be shitty! So I tacked it onto the end of this one. =)

Only one thing that makes the imba just ba. Larva can't attack until it morphs into a unit at which point it loses the ability to morph into the other units it could previously morph into.

At least you can still own em with spells like psi-storm and fungal growth.

I have no idea what inspired you to write such an inaccurate, blatantly obnoxious and flat out wrong post. Larva can't even attack man, so who gives a shit about it's armour? Do you even play Starcraft2?

The larvae makes up for the lack of Zerg units. Somewhat. Which is the only reason Browder didn't have them nerfed. However, a single Psi-storm or Fungal Growth will kill larvae in the AOE.

I reported this topic, no balance whines (especially towards Zerg, we're UP).

For the record, you can neural parasite them to kill them. Not that hard :/

Also fungal >.<

I did enjoy your writeup though. Definitely overlooked the power of the larva. Now to work on my larva rush

OP is absolutely right.

We need to nerf larvae immediately.

We should probably give the 10 armor to marines instead.

Zealots require 10 armor too. Ultralisks have a very easy time killing them, and zerg has larva too.

And banelings/bf hellions kill larvae SO fucking fast.

There is one unit that is more powerful than the larva. It's a unit that has many powerful features unique only to itself. It's a unit that is massed in every single game featuring a zerg. I am talking, of course, about the hatchery.

There are not many units that can transform into other units. The Zergling into the Baneling and the Corruptor into the Brood Lord are examples of this. There is only one unit that has the ability to change into nine different units--this is the larva of course. But there is only one unit that can actually create other units: the Hatchery (I except the Queen because it too can only create units in partnership with a Hatchery). The hatchery creates larva--and the larva can turn into anything else. You can pick whichever unit will best suit your needs at that point in time--and then make lots of them! And the Hatchery produces larvae all game--for free! You don't even need to tell it to produce. The Hatchery also makes Queens, so by my count, the Hatchery can make one more unit than the larva can--and it doesn't have to kill itself to do that either!

[image loading][image loading]
The huge, ridiculous number of things the hatchery can produce up to 19 at a time with just a single click.

It is also one of the hardest units to kill in the entire game. It has over 1500 health and it heals itself! It can upgrade to 2500 health if it turns into a hive. No other unit in the game has this much health, not even the Battle Cruiser or Nexus. You spawn with three of them at the very start of the game. Crazy, I know. (Also, please note that it is the Hatchery that produces the larva, which does not produce itself; proof: try to make a larva without a Hatchery.)

Another fairly unique aspect of the Hatchery is that it does not cost any supply. This is a feature only shared by other imbaimba units like Changeling, the Infested Terran, the Interceptor, or the Gateway. I feel this is very under-appreciated by zerg players, especially considering how much the race is limited by the 200 supply cap. Not only does the Hatchery not cost supply, it can even make larvae and transform them into overlords, a unit that gives you supply. Changelings can’t do that. Interceptors can’t do that. Larvae can do it once, but Hatcheries can do it as often as they need to.

Just look at what all those cute little Imbaimbas are squirming around. It's the Big Mama Imba!

The Hatchery also has many other abilities that no other unit in the game has, such as the ability to research Overlord ventral sacs, the ability to spread creep that stops any unit but the Zerg from building on it, and the ability to store minerals (which only the Terran Imba Center and the Protoss Ridiculexus have--and both of those buildings are imbalanced too, for reasons that I may outline in a post at a later time [I make no more than one post per day so as not to accidentally kill anyone from an overdose of quality]).

In conclusion, the Imbatchery needs to be nerfed. At the very least I recommend making it a Tier 2 unit, so that Zerg does not have access to its awesome power from the very start of the game.

There is still one thing in the universe even more imba than the hatchery!!! It is the Overmind! It controls every infested unit in the universe! The Overmind knows more about you than you know about yourself once you are infested and the Overmind is able to order larva to turn into drones to create hatcheries to make queens to make the biggest booming economy Trump has ever seen! Indeed the Overmind is so powerful that even when killing it costs much energy and a life. The Overmind is even able to reproduce itself into more Overminds and then Truly become unstoppable! Name one person who can defeat such a powerful being. This is also why Blizzard Chose not to include the Overmind. It would make zerg impossible to defeat! (Overmind>Hatchery>larva>Drone>Queen)
